mccasksl Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Greetings: What is the general consensus on recommended coolant for mid-late 2000's Duratec? Caterham literature points to Comma X-Stream Red, which I have yet to find in the US. What is everyone else using in the US? To top off existing? To refill after total flush? Steve Austin
MV8 Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 It's a ford. I would flush, then whatever standard, normal life antifreeze is readily available to me nearby as needed. 50/50 distilled water mix.
kayentaskier Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 When I asked Josh Robbins this question a couple of years ago, he recommended either Zerex Asian or Peak Orange 1
CarlB Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 This is what Ford recommends. HOAT (Hybrid OAT) Silicates & Organic Acids Zerex™ G-05™ Ford, Chrysler, European YELLOW I am not sure it makes a lot of difference if you change it frequently. Zerex also makes coolant that meets all the OEM requirements. 1
oilteq Posted July 21, 2023 Posted July 21, 2023 Silicates are effective in controlling aluminum corrosion. Most U.S. passenger car coolants use silicates and phosphates and I think the name brands would do a good job. HOAT products are convenient if you have a mixed fleet as they also protect against liner cavitation in diesel engines. I think most of the coolants today use some form of organic acid technology (OAT, HOAT, NOAT). I have never seen it in writing, but the voice in my head says mixing a modern OAT coolant with the old green antifreeze using an alkaline corrosion inhibitor results in a mixture with less corrosion inhibition than either of its components.
mccasksl Posted August 18, 2023 Author Posted August 18, 2023 Excellent! Thanks for all your input. Steve
