add-liteness Posted August 28 Posted August 28 I have a Ford T9 gearbox that I rebuilt. The gearbox works well except I am not able to select 1st gear while going faster than about 15 mph. The gearbox doesn't grind like a synchro issue, it just refuses to engage. Double clutching and rev matching doesn't help. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Any information I can gather before I take it apart again will be appreciated.
IamScotticus Posted August 28 Posted August 28 (edited) Try sliding this plate back and forth. @MV8 trick. Maybe refresh the selector saddle if it's worn. Edited August 28 by IamScotticus
MRH Posted August 28 Posted August 28 (edited) I occasionally get stuck in 2nd and need to open the transmission and break loose the center selector rod. This is annoying, but easy to fix. Then its good for a few weeks. Could this be the same issue? 61 S2 7, not sure which ford transmission I have STANCART 1 st gear has syncro Edited August 28 by MRH

Could that be "Stanpart", which would be Triumph which an early S2 most likely would be.
MV8 Posted August 29 Posted August 29 It sounds like oil slosh off the gears at that rpm is enough to misalign a gate. I'd check the top and side cover fit and adjustment, take the top cover off and lightly push components from side to side to attempt to see how it could block first. "Rebuilt" covers a lot of ground from everything to an "aerosol overhaul".
IamScotticus Posted August 29 Posted August 29 I believe Lotus fitted Triumph shifter extensions to Ford boxes. Take apart that turret and clean it up, new grease, etc.

joe7 Posted August 30 Posted August 30 I had a similar problem. It was the shift dog. Rather that it being "round" with flats on the sides, it was worn square. I guess after 90,000 miles it just was worn down. Bought a used Spit shift dog and had to grind the sides of "ball" to make it with flats. BTW, that's what Lotus did. Another thing I did at that time was to replace the reverse stop inside near the end of the shift lever. That was a small problem finding one because the "older" ones were screwed in while the newer ones are riveted. 1
add-liteness Posted August 30 Author Posted August 30 Joe7 Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me which of the parts in the attached diagrams of the gearbox you had to replace and modify? Thanks Rich
joe7 Posted August 30 Posted August 30 Add-liteness. The images are for the single rail Ford trans. For the remote shifter repair, I didn't do anything to the trans internals. I replaced the shift dog which is at the end of the shift rod on the Triumph housing. The shift dog goes into the shift rails. See Moss Motors - Spitfire- External Gearbox, 1962-74 (3 rail) . Its part #77, unfortunately NA. Try the Triumph crowd, they should have one as that was where I got mine. At the amazing cost of $25 plus shipping. Hope this helps. BTW, I have a complete aluminum remote shifter which is a definite upgrade if you are interested.
MRH Posted September 2 Posted September 2 (edited) @joe7 Can you please post a pic of the remote shifter you have? Edited September 3 by MRH
joe7 Posted September 3 Posted September 3 (edited) Here's an overview of all the parts for the remote. PM sent Edited September 3 by joe7
