southwind25 Posted December 11, 2007 Share Posted December 11, 2007 Is there anyone in the Austin Texas area, or anyone that knows anyone in the austin texas area, that could be of some help looking at a ford x-flow engined car? Long story...but the puchase of the Birkin has encountered a snag with the 1600 x-flow/webers/tuning/internals/ ignition..., :willy: Apparently the car is running rough and the owner needs to get it right before it transfers into our hands..Or at least figure out the problem so we know what we are looking at. we are up here in Akron Ohio... and can,t diagnose the problem from 1361 miles away.. any help or suggested mechanics (formula ford gurus?) are appreciated. But this is a matter of the present owner who isnt very mechanically savy trying to solve it. It's not coming out of our pocket... Offer to buy the car but put $2k - 4k of the price into escrow. Get the car to your shop and fix it and then come to terms with the seller on how much goes to you and how much to him. Get it all in writing (with a notary signature) and in addtion to any parts required include $s per hour for your labor that he would have had to spend anyway. That way you will know the work is done right and if it requires a total overhaul, you will be mostly covered. If it is only an ignition or weber issue I am sure it could be fixed quickly. If it is an engine/valve train problem, then at least I could diagnose it for you. PM me to let me know. tnttim Posted December 14, 2007 Share Posted December 14, 2007 How come you dont just by it the way it is and worry about the issues of getting it running later? If the price is right then just take it. You can always fix everything short of the engine having some sort of MAJOR issue. Even a minor issue like a spun rod bearing or something is still relitively fixable. Just ahve him adjust his price to cover your exspence to have it fixed. I would assume that the seller has a trailer? Could he possibly have it taken to a shop (or two) and have an estimate. You could even suggest that you would offer to cover that cost of independant estimates. At least then your only out that cost if the deal falls through. Just have them check to make sure the enigine is solid and that you have a fixable unit. Any desent shop can do that in less than an hour, with a good compression check, or possibly pulling off the oil pan, check for metal in the oil and filter and such. I had to pay for the car first, to get the broker and owner to understand i was serious about the purchase. Then the owner went into action,,and found a problem that should have been known from the start. I am heavily considering taking it "as is" for a lesser price than that which has been already paid. I am sure we could get it up and running very well ourselves. your right this would be a good option...IF i could. But the owner who is working through a broker doesnt want to do take less because he will loose money on the whole deal..and he doesnt want to spend more money getting it fixed either...i could recieve the car without an engine, but only for a price that doesnt nearly make up the diffrence. As well the owner doesnt want to spend the money to trailer it to someone who has already offered to help as well..because of the price of gas to trailer it. So as i understand it..unless the owner changes his mind,,i have to recieve the car as a running vehicle without money being spent to do so..or risk spending more than what was already made a deal for.. :crazy: Additionally, i already have 2 full restoration projects underway and Mary would blow a head gasket if she knew i was recieveing YET another project. :ack: i am working on this as well, happily she is not your typical sportscar widow and wants this car as well..but running as promised...((got her emerald earings for christmas...shhh )) i'm such a suck up It may be a very simple fix,,we are not afraid of doing the neccisary work, we are very used to complete rebuilds from junk. Luckily a fellow list member here is willing to look at the car and hopefully can provide a few answers on the problem and condition, but i cant make the owner accept the help either..i can only offer the solution. trust me..i am trying EVERYTHING i can to resolve this and put the car in our shop. from what we have seen, and the history,,it's a near perfect car otherwise. I think the seller or the broker is just jerking your chain (gas is not that expensive if you understand what I am saying) and just wants your money. Have you talked directly with the owner and not the broker if not you should as this just seems a little funny especially if you have already paid for the car. If I were you I would just have the car shipped to you and then get it fixed and take the seller to court to get your money back for the repair especially if the seller stated in writing that the car is in good condition at the time you agreed to buy it. I just purchased a truck in Fl. a few weeks ago to tow my -7 and it sure wasn't as listed. As I had prepaid also, it was my truck. Now over $2k later it is close to fitting my needs. I also just picked up an aluminum trailer to haul it with. I had not planed on any of this support equipment at the purchase of the car. I could loan you the trailer and gun, you and mary could go pick it up. I would need the trailer back by the 1 week in Jan. to take my car south.
