tranny slickery stuff

Since we think we will have to be replacing the tailshaft seal on the stock ford T9 tranny. What is the best tranny oil-lube-fluid i should put in this thing?

something by redline? or some synthetic even ? or?...not sure what the stock is supposed to be?

 

who's the best supplier for parts for this tranny? does anyone have a manual for such?...we dont have anything apart yet but are guessing it has a typical rear tailshaft seal right?

I use Redline MTL in my Birkin as well as the T9 in my '64 MGB and have been happy with the results in both. Don't know if you have a drain plug in your tranny, but it could be difficult to remove the existing fluid if you don't. I put a drain plug in mine when I had it apart.

 

I've gotten parts from two sources in the US and been happy with both.

You might also check out your local auto parts stores and see if any one carries a seal for a mid 80's Mercury Merkur. That has the T9 tranny in it.

BGH recommends a 75W90 GL-4 for the Type-9. The Redline equivalent is MT-90. Although MTL is the correct grade, it is a slightly thinner 75W80.

 

Interestingly BGH doesn't recommend Redline, claiming they've seen excessive gear wear with that brand. I've always had good luck with their engine and gear oils, and was unable to find the BGH recommended brands here in the States, so I went with MT-90. Certainly works well for me...so far.

yeah,,,that Taylor quaife is sure pretty....i dont think i'll be buying a complete one anytime soon. (hack) :shocked:

 

no bottom drain plug i can see...just a plug in the side,,,which seems kinda low for a fill plug.

We got the tunnel off and the rear tranny seal off last night. UGH what a chore that was!

hopefully a new seal will solve the leak, however we are a bit concerened thhere might be a bit too much play in the output shaft. We are going to try and put a "speedi-sleeve" on the yoke to provide a little better sealing surface and tighten up the seal backspring a few hairs..see if that works. looks like we are going to have to provide an access cover-hole in the tranny tunnel as well.. we cant see another way to get to the drain-fill plug on the side without removing the whole darn assembly!

I have not done this myself but I know people have used shortened Allen wrenches to squeeze in and remove the plug (maybe with extended lever?). I am also not sure these folks just have very long fingers....

 

There are also recipes around for a drain plug in the tranny bottom (see Carlos pics on Birkinowners list) and somebody else I know put a filler plug in the top cover plate.

Ok,,,filling the gearbox through the gearshift opening,,does NOT work very well on this T9.

So we ended up with the shortened allen wrench method..

we got as much out of the tranny through the same opening..

 

old tranny fluid tastes terrible:ack: dont ask me how i know.

 

While we have this all apart, we are going to fabricate a driveshaft safety loop as well in the tunnel.
