Is the car currently registered in MD? if so, then my guess is that you would be fine, but if the registration has lapsed or if it is currently registered in another state, then you should definitely look into it. I found out (nearly the hard way) to take nothing at face value when dealing with kit cars and registration. Before I purchased my first Westfield, the car was legally registered in CA and had the coveted smog barcode. I assumed registering it in WA would be straight forward, but before completing the purchase, I called up the proper authorities here in WA to check if it was the same as a normal car. I was told “No problem. No differences. We’ll just do a VIN check to make sure the car isn’t stolen and a brake light inspection.” When I actually showed up with the car, however, the story changed. I had to see someone called “The Specialist” (really) at the Highway Patrol station who made me jump through a lot of hoops before he finally allowed me to license the car in WA.

Hi John thanks for the informative reply. The individual mentions that the car has already been licensed in MD - does this mean that there will not be any issues come emissions inspection (held every two years in MD).

Thanks and Mazda has been very kind to introduce me to a fellow local whom I hope to experience the se7en with as passenger!

Hopefully he has introduced you to someone other than himself. Not to knock Mazda or anything, but a ride in his '7' would not give you a true sense of what a 'normal' 7 is like ;):D

I've already warned him about that. In fact I won't even show him my seven until he has seen and touched a real one. LOL

That's a good question to ask the seller. Obviously its engine management system is not off any production car.

If the car will do some track duty it should have the Caterham FIA roll-over bar, not the standard one (The FIA weighs abt 20 lbs more and has a cross member). A 5 point or 6 point harness is recommended too.

With 185 fuel injected hp, you shd have little trouble keeping up with competitors, including 996s, on all tracks but those with very long straights, esp if you are running race rubber. Since the Caterham is so light, it doesn't wear out race tires like a normal car does. I have about 7k miles on my Toyo RA1's including 5-7 track days and still have tread.

The driving experience in a Se7en is so different than anything else, on the road or on the track. You are sitting 4" from the ground, you are packed in tightly, you hear and feel everything the car does, the wind buffeting is incredible, it's true sensory overload. So even if you are no faster than in the 996, you will achieve speed and fast times in a different manner and you will have a much more intense, involving experience-for better or worse.

I think we are due a Saturday morning coffee meet, say the first weekend in April in Potomac. We can arrange to have a few 7's there and debate the pro's and con's of each.

"Exlondoner", as you probably have gathered by now, there are a great bunch of guys & gals on this site and you have found a good source for educated opinion here (present company excluded).

I am planning on doing a NASA track school at Summit at the end of April if anybody in interested in partaking/spectating I would love to hear from you. It would be nice to have a few of us in the pits together.

Cheers-

Dermot.

Mazda:

I'm going to let the cat out of the bag!!!!!!!!!

Mazda likes to give rides with the passenger's seat unbolted.

LOL. Those days are gone :(. Seat is bolted in. I do still have to find one of the seat belt bolts though. :D

So Mick,

What made you finally choose to buy the Lotus Exige over the 7, was it the relative practicality v the 7,(did you get to try a 7) ?

Good Luck with your new car .
