Finally, My First Drive of the Year

Recommended Posts

After my visit with the PT today, I thought back on what he had instructed me to do beyond the exercises. One thing stood out. You can do most anything you want that doesn't cause pain. He said the healing from the surgery is all done, it is just a matter of strengthening the muscles and to not do any heavy lifting or wrench turning.

This afternoon, with two friends standing by to help extricate me if necessary, I stepped into the Caterham for the first time since mid-January. No problem getting in. Since I was in there and it was a nice day I decided I might as well go for a ride so I fired it up and headed out with the two friends following in one of my Miatas.

It felt fantastic driving the car again, I'm still wearing a big grin. :D:D:D:D

Back at the shop came the crucial test, could I get out of the car without causing pain. I removed the steering wheel and cautiously worked my way out. I felt a little strain but NO PAIN. This doesn't mean I can just start driving it at will, but it does give me reason to believe I can take the Caterham to some events this year as well as do some canyon carving closer to home.

I've been talking with some people about making a trailer hitch for the Caterham so I can tow my small tire trailer with my LOx supply aboard. This will let me take longer trips than my portable 6 hour supply allows. If this works out I will be able to take the Caterham on the tour with Gert to Yellowstone.

Now that is great!! I really hope that works out.

I am beginning to count the days. That may be helped by the fact that I am on a short work week now due to economic circumstances. But then....it gives me ample time to check the car.

Man that is great news, Skip. I know how you feel not being able to drive the toy. Don't push it but plan your trips so you don't have to get out very much. It's good to have you in the drivers seat again. Russ

We bet the drive was medication in itself!

Absolutely correct. It was the best medication so far, they should write an Rx for it: Drive Se7en, repeat as necessary to maintain grin. :D

Thanks for all the kind words, its great to be a driver again instead of a wanna-be.

Driving the Caterham is part of the physical therapy program except you don't have the pretty nurse telling you to push harder.

In my case, the pretty PT was 7-8 months pregnant and took maternity leave in the middle of my therapy to be replaced by a guy.
