3 Stalkers for sale

Given the risk of damage, destruction and abuse by clueless rental drivers you got to have a high rental price and consequently limited demand. I know there are some folks who do that in the UK and here in CA a previous Caterham dealer used it to lure customers. But in general I suppose it is not a very promising business model.

who built the cars, Dennis?

Is that $24,999 each or for the lot?

If it's for the lot...might be interesting for interested clubbers to pitch in and buy the street car to run/rent.

This is sad to hear. I visited Brunton Auto about two years ago when construction on these cars was underway. The business owner and his son were there learning from Dennis and his two employees how to best handle the sheetmetal panels on at least one car (maybe all three). After the intial work at Dennis' shop, they intended to return home to VA to complete the cars, I believe.

I found Dennis helpful and likeable and the two guys from Virginia building these cars to be very nice too.

Unfortunately renting track cars is an expensive proposition at the best of times. With the economy the way it is, it is not surprising the business struggled.

I guess I now have to go back here to rent a Seven for the track.

Seriously though, race car rental works in a place like this - a ton of people making the pilgrimage to race track Mecca means plenty of customers. Its hard to think of a race circuit in North America with the same star quality and drawing power to make this business work.

I would believe that but I am also not aware of a track in the US being considered a public toll road with no speed limit, no safety equipment requirements but otherwise regular traffic laws. The liability situation is just different over there. If you crash your car it is just a matter between you, your insurance and eventually the police. There is little use suing a track operator.

I grew up pretty close to the 'ring and now I regret that I never made it on track there.

Sounds like a good excuse for a tour. :D

Yes, I would really like to do that. But the logistics problems are just overwhelming. Also, while there are interesting things to see and drive in Europe, I still have not exhausted the opportunities in the US. So, maybe in 10 years.

  • 3 weeks later...

What do you guys think would be a fair price for one of the race cars?

I've had some tell me his asking price is too high, but I really don't know what Super Stalkers generally sell for. I'm looking for a street-legal OT/time trial car, and ran across these. I was trying to stay below $16k, but the power/weight of a Stalker is tempting...

Always hard to put a value on someone elses car, but that never stopped me before!

A couple of "regular" Stalkers (non-supercharged) have sold recently in the $15/18K range. The supercharged version should be worth a few thou more, if you want one. Also, don't know if the cars offered are "street legal", which could make it more difficult for them to be sold.

I have about 15K in my standard Stalker, just in parts and paint.

Hope this offers some insight.

One is street legal. The other two were used as Rent-A-Race Car cars at VIR. I would think the Street legal car would be more valuable than the other two just because it has been through the BMV process and is registered as a 1962 replica Lotus 7.

It probably wouldn't take much to make the "race car" street legal, depending on which state you are trying to get a license in.

One of the cars was built by Dennis Brunton (the father of the Stalker), the other two were built by the shop that is now trying to sell them, so there may or may not be quality issues.

Not to mention, how much were they "beat on" as a rental race car?

You could probably buy one cheaper, or even build your own for less.
