Wtf

Younger guys may never been exposed to the time honored tradition of riding in the back of a pickup truck. We all did it as kids, and teenagers and adults. You were told to get into a position where you could not fall out during starts, stops and turns. Well, we didn't fall out, and nobody I knew ever fell out. Of course the dogs rode back there too. Pickups were "country convertibles" in the pre-politically correct days.

The woman in the truck had the kids belted into car seats. I can't tell if the front seat is too full for the kids, or just that they all enjoy riding in the breeze.

Is it as safe as riding in the cab with a seat belt on? No, but life ain't safe.

I totally agree with Jerry on this one. We did lots of things in our youth that were fun, thrilling and dangerous and we survived.

Many people today would think riding in the back of a pickup safer than riding in a Se7en.

I loved riding in the back of my dad's pick up truck. All three of us kids would ride back there. Every so often he would hit the brakes and count... less than three 'thuds' meant someone fell out!! OK, kidding about the 'thud' part.... kinda...:) If those seats were strapped in somehow,no issue. If not..... well, probably not a great idea for infants.

And to add to the reckless behavior, we actually rode a bike without helmets AND drank straight outta the garden hose!

Lucky. I must have had a more sheltered up-bringing. I couldn't hold the hose so well whilst pedaling.

I just got back from the SEMA show in Las Vegas, and there was a guy there selling a set of seats to install in a pickup. They were on a frame, with full harnesses, and looked similar to a Recaro. Now that would be the set-up for riding in the rear.

Well, I don't know. I just see that lady smashing into the poor kid in front of her. At anything more than 10 mph you can guess the consequences. This is plain stupid but may be that is also how evolution keeps stupidity in check.

Even if this was common practice and probably fun in the stone age of automotive transportation does not necessarily mean it is a good idea.

Make a few vehicle accidents where the passenger was riding in the bed of the pick up and you would see why its a law. We use to drive around without seat belts and airbags most of us made it ok. Alot have not.

I have been a paramedic for the last 14 years. I have seen a steady decline in the amount of serious accidents over the last ten years. The saftey improvements in modern vehicles are really making a difference. Man I hate to agree with a government bureaucrat. We now drive up to accidents that we think for sure there is a fatality and the driver is walking around. Nearly every serious injury is from someone who wasnt wearing a seat belt or rollover with ejection because they were not belted in.

So I have to disagree with Jerry for the first time ever. Let the adults ride in the back, they will have to live with the end result. Children have no control. In Texas you will end up in jail and CPS would mostly likely be paying you visit.

As a retired firefighter, I have to agree with WestTexas. Sorry, but there's a lot of stupid people out there and we often deal with them. Sometimes wonder if we're hurting our gene pool by protecting them though.

I'm not a fan of big brother black boxes in new cars.... a lot of us would likely get our insurance cancelled if they could see how we drive;)

Loren: It's one thing for me to fondly remember the "old" days, but If I had to look at the carnage that you see, I would not have made the comment in the first place. I stand corrected.

Am I the only one that sees the irony in this conversation occuring on a site of enthusiasts who drive and race home made hand built cars?!?

Arya you forgot to add with little to no SAFETY gear except a roll-bar and seat belt and maybe a crushable steering colum....smileing and knoding in agreement.

LOL... true.

But we don't commute in them nor are we distracted with entertainment systems, cup holders, crying babies (not counting scared passengers) etc... It's hard not to be aware of your surroundings in a 7.

And perhaps I'm one of those in the gene pool I was talking about;)

Jerry I am right there with you going down memory road. I grew up in the country. It wasnt uncommon for use to be going down the road at 65 and my dad send us out the side window into the bed of the pickup to get a cold drink out of the cooler. We did it all the time. Luckily we never got hurt but I think back and say WTF.

  • 1 month later...

I came across this while looking for alternative seven designs and felt compelled to put in my 2 cents worth. I have done a lot of stupid things in my day and will do some more, no doubt but I agree with WestTexas too. The woman is free to do what she wants but if you are a parent you compromise your range of free choices, your responsibility is primarily to the kids. The driver too should know better.

Perhaps it is a form of "retroactive birth control"! :) :)

In the end Darwin prevails.

What about the Subaru Brats that were sold in the 80's with the rear jump seats? It was factory option.

I agree it isn't safe, but likely better than all of the H.D. riders W/O helments.

I see many of them at TT events, (Tavern to Tavern).

With my driving on public roads, I sure can't cast stones either.

Most of us here are quite lucky to be here, but I for one still enjoy the ride through life.
