Now it seems to be pure nostalgia-certainly the 3-wheel driving dynamic is not as favorable as 4 wheel. It is beautiful, but I'll take a $46K Se7en. Its amazing some of the douches in the comments on that article-- Complaining that its too retro. Do they even make anything today that I'd want to buy for under 45K? I might like a Miata for a daily driver I guess. But, while a superb car, it doesnt stand out in a parking lot, have any unique quirks in its styling, push any limits. And then the fact is the Miata was meant to be mildly retro anyhow. So ... whats the cutting edge these days that 24 year old guys dream of getting? Oh yes. Subaru and Mazda factory rally cars/ricers. Great cars for sure! But yawn. I mean seriously. If they bring their RX8 to a car show in 40 years, it wont gather a crowd unless it has a flux capacitor and a Mr. Fusion sitting in the back seat. I think the price is quite reasonable if you compare it to a similarly hand-built Caterham. In a side car configuration the have very odd handling. In a tricycle configuration they are vile handling and dangerous. In a reverse tricycle? When a motorcycle tows a trailer you have a bad handling car. When trike tows a trailer it is even worse, you end up with a bad handling tractor trailer. I have never driven one but have seen quite a few on the track. My preference is for the Triking with an 1100 Moto Guzzi engine on the front bumper. I have seen one of these supercharged also. DeanG Posted November 6, 2010 Share Posted November 6, 2010 I've seen a Morgan trike "raced" at Lime Rock. The driver was having a good time but stayed in the very center of the track. They certainly look like fun in much the way an old style Se7en is fun - that is not that fast but totally involving to drive. My wife & I sometimes hang out with the Moto Guzzi owners. They held track records back in the day when they competed with 8 liter Bentleys and such, but big cars were not noted for their agility. The Morgan, Ace and Triking have great aestethic appeal but I think on a purely performance per dollar scale the Seven has them licked. The romantic "Walter Mitty" factor is another matter completely. I would add this though, I think (never haven driven a three-wheeler) the driving experience and feedback sensations would be greater at speeds closer the legal limit than the seven (ie. the seven would need to be driven faster for similar feedback).
