so... time to start something new.

 

give me some opinions. my idea right now is a small two seater... target 800-850 lbs. This would be a mid-engine car, chain drive.

 

have a line on an '07 CBR 1000RR for $1k, including electronics, harnesses, exhaust header - not including radiator.

 

give me whatever nuggets of info you think will be useful.:lurk:

Abandoning the 7?

 

I would think an EXO style frame would fit the bill. Something along the lines of a scale down RCR superlight roadster. 850 lbs is a high goal. Most likely need moly tubing to hit your weight.

Yeah, I'm not that concerned about bodywork - minimal to get it on the road. Curious why that RCR car weighs 1300-1400 lbs. Seems a bit on the heavy side. Is it supersized?

What are you planning to do with it. Street Legal ? AutoX beast ?? Track Car?

 

That would be the ? I'd be asking myself... Make it big enough for Arya and me...

good question about size... don't know... this one is going to be designed in CAD, and since now I have access to a CNC Router, a CNC plasma, and a CNC mill, gonna have lots of little parts I just couldn't make before.

 

It's going to be chain drive (engine sits same orientation as in the bike), enclosed diff (housing just around the gears), with single rear disc.

 

I'm kind of thinking about doing inboard brakes with halfshafts in the front... That does add overall weight, but should provide outstanding wheel control by making caliper and disc part of the sprung weight.

You should check out ZCars Mini web site for inspiration. They do a bike-engined, chain driven, rear drive Mini conversion that might give you some ideas. The web site itself isn't overly helpful, but the downloadable brochure has some nice photos of the mechanicals.

 

Also, look at http://www.dpcars.net/ Dennis has taken some very creative approaches to weight saving with his dp1 and dp2 designs, and has documented it quite well on the site.

A Mod. But U. Maryland's car from last year was INSANE.

wow Martin, that's a very nice car. Out of my budget range, and against my tinkering nature. LOL

 

I noticed it has no diff in the back... something I have been contemplating. I think you can make a suspension that can handle fine with no diff when you're pulling g's, like in autox... not sure how fun that car is to drive around a parking lot.

damn, I miss the old days. They've come a long way. Got any more info on the car?

 

look up the U Maryland FSAE team. Ibeleive a few of them are still in school because last Memorial Day they were telling me that bthis year they were going to play w/ active aero.

 

a Formula car would keep u off teh streets unlike Franken7, but if u were planning to go autoXing more often, FSAE as a class is open to non-students, etc.

Looked at some of those fsae build videos and its amazing what they are doing. Using autoclaves and making carbon fiber bodies and parts, milling their own parts, etc. Also some neat turbo and supercharged bike engines. Also using cfd to design their floors, diffuser and wings. Neat stuff.
