Kitcat
That Caterham has many differences, esp in cockpit, as compared to my '97. The X-flow doesn't look like my X-flow. And it has a lotus mfg plate, not Caterham. What do the experts think?
yellowss7
I don't know about the 97's, but the rear shock mounting is definately different than my 2000. Dash doesn't look right either. Roll bar is strange too. Never seen bolts on the top of the rear struts before. Rear lights are wrong, unless they were going for an old lotus look. Front turn signal lens are the english type, Not the type they used in the US back then, although I think RedGoose's new R500 has that type. Oh, and in the description it describes the front brakes and stub axle as being from an Elan. I thought most of our front was from a Triumph Spitfire. One last thing, It states that it is a Caterham super seven, titled as a 1967 Lotus, everything new as of 1997 or 1998. It doesn't say that it's a 97 or 98 Caterham, just that it's been redone. I guess we'll have to wait for an earlier Caterham expert to chime in. Tom Edited November 1, 2011 by yellowss7
Croc
It looks like it was a mid 60s S2 - dash, engine and details follow that period. The rear shock mounting is puzzling - have never seen it that way on a Caterham before but thats how my old S2 was done. Roll bar is also S2-like. Engine looks like the old Ford lump from the 60s - does not look like a crossflow or a twink. Not sure if it was dressed up that way or it is how it originally looked. The ad is not clear but I think we are seeing an S2 that was rebuilt/restored in 1997. I like it a lot! Edited November 1, 2011 by Croc
Tony
I asked Jeff what the serial number was and he said, based on the original owners paperwork, that it was 7LSB2385. Looked it up in my Magnificient Seven book and 2385 was in the Lotus Series 3 1300/1600 group, but as an SC2311-SC2645, not an SB...... Guessing the L is for left hand drive, but not sure. Think it may be an original Lotus based on the number. Edited November 1, 2011 by Tony
cs3tcr
Its definately a Caterham chassis, but looks like either a NOS early chassis or a new "old" one from Arch. The rear shock mounts are typical for all early cars, Caterhams included. If the front uprights are from an Elan, they are correct for the Lotus built Sevens (they too are Triumph based). The tail lamps are correct for late Series 2 and all Series 3 Lotus', bar the Twin Cam SS. And finally the dash, it looks home made, it not stock Series 3 Lotus, nor is it an S2 dash. Anyways, it looks cool and i would love to have it, but lack of space and currently $ would prevent it. Though (shamless plug) i am selling my car, it too is on the Bay. 11Budlite
Nice looking car! Probably not a big deal but it looks like the #1 header pipe is hitting the steering column, or it's pretty d*** close...
Guest Terry
It appears that who ever built this car has tried to make it look like a S2. Nice looking car, but these early non original cars with live rear ends just don't make that sort of money.
Tony
The car sold on ebay for 20K. Seemed like a good way to get into a Seven. They don't last long at that price. Back to the hunt...... Tony
