All carbon caterham

Ian,

 

I can send photos of my existing rear wing c/f pattern and twill orientation.

 

I would prefer all-carbon, over carbon/fiberglas -- but what is the cost differential, in general terms? I know that MOG Racing makes the carbon/fiberglas wings, but with the added weight of the fiberglas, there is no real weight savings, and the c/f becomes a cosmetic touch only.

 

However, I would plan to have the inner surface of the wings coated with pick-up truck bed-liner (as I have done my c/f cycle wings and c/f rear wings) for stone protection, so i am no doubt negating some of the c/f weight savings in any event.

 

Adding in a one-inch inside spacer, on the body side, into the mold for c/f wide-track clams sounds like the way to go, to provide for wide-track coverage. I think the forward wing supports to accommodate these clams would have to be custom-fabricated, in any event.

Tom, I ordered my Superlight back in 2000 and speced it with Clams instead of cycle fenders. It is a widetrack and the clams do extend out to cover the Cr500's or R888's.

 

The tread is right to the edge of the clams, but they do infact cover the tyres.

 

I sent pics over to Angus when he was refurbing his car and I believe he went with the wide track and clams set up as a result.

 

My clams do NOT cover my 10 inch wide Hoosier slicks on the wide track front. Surprise, surprise. :jester: I could be persuaded to consider the carbon clams if the price was right.

So you may also be interested in going the c/f clams route? Good to hear.

 

If new molds were being made up, I would not mind another half-inch or 1-inch more space between the wings and the body, if it were fairly easy to do. This would also give more room for low-set headlamps (I'm hoping to retain my custom headlamp brackets, even though the stock Caterham front clam stay includes a headlamp bracket). The front clam stay would have to be re-worked or custom in any event, if the clams were wider

 

One question (the perennial one): Do you notice increased front lift with the clams? Debate goes 'round and 'round on this one.

 

Your front view of your Seven with the Hoosier slicks on it, looks like a little kid clomping around in his father's shoes...!

Tom, on the track, I got to 125mph and I can honestly say that I've never felt the car get light. I have felt side gusts that have literally mover me over 3-4 feet. :ack:

 

I was thinking of making some cutouts in the clams maybe with some wiremesh inserts, ala a picture of a 7 in Lowflying 2 issues ago.

 

Don't know if it's really necessary but looked good. :cooldude:

I'll bet the Seven you are referring to is the James Whiting C. car, white with red and blue stripes on the wings, and mesh panels?

 

I don't think the mesh would stop the water, which (in addition to stones) is my purpose for running front wings....

MichaelD did the cutouts in his clams with a wire mesh insert. While this photo is not ideal, you can just see the inserts by looking from the underside of the clam.

Scallops are good as well, provided they are not too sandy.

 

All seriousness aside, I'd be up for a set of wide track clam shell wings if we could put something together.

Hi Folks - noob here!

Just now joined specifically to post in this thread - I'm also very interested in a set of CF clams so if any sort of "bulk buy" takes off please put me down for a set...!

Bsimon and I seem to be the only ones so far with a carbon clam fetish. Bob S. has some ideas about how they should be designed; we haven't worked yet with Ian Ashdown in California, who said he has the capability of making them.

 

I would prefer all c/f, and would then spray the underside with pickup-truck bed-liner, to protect against stones.

 

I presently have all c/f fromt cycle wings and rear wings, and coated them with bed-liner. the top-sides are clear-coated, which protects against moisture absorption, and gives the wings a real three-dimensional look.

I'm totally on your side - nice plain cf with a stone protector underlay. Though I'm led to believe from BC that the carbon wings are not susceptible to star crazing, I'd still prefer some protection & if it's soft enough it would quieten down the stone noise a bit too ;-)

 

I think my car would be just spot on with cf nose, clams & rear wings - but I'm not changing unless I can source a set of clams... not into cycle wings at all!

In fact might put me down for two pairs, especially if we manage a one off batch - to be sure I have spare & also to get the numbers up ;-)

 

 

FYI I'm a British ex-pat living in Sandnes - are you familiar with Norway??

Before the untimely death of Richard Lee (Richard in France, "RiF" on Blatchat), he and I had corresponded re c/f clams, and he said he had some patterns made up but no time to do the production. Sadly for him and for all of us, he was prescient.

 

Neil in Norway, are you still interested? I'm assume bsimon is, also. It would be good to get something moving on this, with one or more of the folks who responded by saying that they could get it done.

Tom - My post was directed at the original poster, as per the thread title, and not specifically to carbon clamshell fenders. Never seen or heard of those, other than on your previous discussions on the matter.

Sorry for looooooooooong delay in reply but been half way out of a Seven scene for a while... Had a bit of bother with my car and had to take legal proceedings on the previous owner & ended up returning the car for my money back. On top of that a change in jobs & relocating to the other side f the country meant no garage whilst we rent & house hunt.. But I digress...!

 

Yes, regardless of not having a seven right now, the plans are building in my head & there´s a house with a built in double garage on the horizon so yes, I´m still in - whatever I get next, it will be an older one with clams of course!

 

I´m thinking, BEC ultralight with carbon everything!
