yellowss7
Great Dave! This year is shaping up to be a really good one. Scott L, said that he is trying to rearrange his schedule to make it as well. Stig, Box, Paul, Pete, Roman, Come on in and join the fun. The more the merrier. That many Sevens on the track at the same time will be a blast. Just over 3 months to go  Tom
DaveD
:svengo: Well I just had my wife take a couple photos with the new helmet I bought to meet the helmet regs for this year. And it is way thicker over my head than my old helmet. It was just below (maybe 1/2 inch) the roll bar. I guess I will be a spectator again this year. :banghead: Dave
yellowss7
Dave, anyway to take the lower seat squab out? If it can be removed, It should get you low enough. I have a thin foam pad that will cushion you but not add alot of height. Give it a try before bailing out. Tom

DaveD
OK, take a look at these pictures and tell me if you think my helmet is low enough now to pass the broom stick test at NJMP. I removed the back/bottom of the seat (it is one piece). With a chair cushion behind my lower back to keep my butt forward I was able to get down a few inches. I am going to go for a drive and see how this will be. My possition is reclined closer to a formula car reclined possition. My vision in front of the car is a lot different too. Avoiding spots on the road will be different, since my last view of the road is considerably further out in front of the car. I have to stretch to see my hood. Also, do I need to do anything with my passenger seat? I wouldn't mind having an instructor to get introduced to the line. Although I could probably pick it up by following others that know the track. Dave
yellowss7
Hi Dave. Looks like your in good position height wise. I have some nice firm foam that you can try out, one thick for the back and one thin for the butt. Without too much trouble we could fab up a custom bead seat for your back and bottom. I have the beads, all we need is some two part epoxy and a couple space saver bags. Let me know if you want to try that out. Tom

Hi Dave - I think you have hit a winner. Head is low enough to make it safe. I am going to go for a drive and see how this will be. My possition is reclined closer to a formula car reclined possition. My vision in front of the car is a lot different too. Avoiding spots on the road will be different, since my last view of the road is considerably further out in front of the car. I have to stretch to see my hood. Yes your view ahead is looking out more with your eye level but should be ok since: 1) you can drive to the track with the regular seat mounted in and take it out once here. 2) you dont have to dodge potholes on a track - its pretty smooth. 3) lining up a car for an apex can be done with your feel on how wide the car is and the face you can see a fair bit out the side. You may want to run with door off (can an S1 do that?) to enhance your spatial vision on where you are on the track. 4) You can use the separate front wheels as a good guide as to where things are. The view out should still be better than some of the formula cars I have driven. Also, do I need to do anything with my passenger seat? I wouldn't mind having an instructor to get introduced to the line. Although I could probably pick it up by following others that know the track. THis is a good question. The seat and harness has to be the same. SO you have 3/4/5 point harness driver side then there needs to be same 3/4/5 pointer on the passenger side. I would make sure you have enough foam to make an identical seat for the passenger. Remember he (or she) has to be as low as you - and we can ask for a short instructor. For learning the line I would suggest finding some youtube videos of Lightning and studying those to memorize the corners in advance or arriving. At least this way you can understand the layout. We can then borrow the map in the classroom when we are there to walk you through corner by corner and also point out the classic areas where mistakes happen - there are 3 spots that are worthwhile knowing. Lightning is a nicely intuitive circuit so with your past driving experience I feel confident you will do well getting to grips with the place. Lastly, you can always follow me for a session. I did this last year with Bball on Thunderbolt to help him understand things first time on that track.

DaveD
Please move me from spectator to driver. :driving: I am registered to drive both days. I also reserved a VIP suite. I asked for an (short) instructor to help me get familiar with the track. I think after that I can learn from following you guys. From what I have seen the last 2 years you all have the track down pretty good. I am going to remove the passenger seat pads to match the driver side. I don't think I need to come up with any pads other than the towel to put behind my lower back. See the pics below. There is a contoured fiberglass shell to sit on and it is not that bad to sit on. It will take me some time getting use to sitting in a more reclined possition. I plan on keeping the doors on (they are removable) as they do not reduce my visablity any and I like the protection from stuff kicked up by the front tires. Although I am thinking about trying to take the windshield off and come up with the small wind deflectors or even run with out anything if that is allowed. In this case the windows will have to come off. My windshield has integrated defroster wires in it and I doubt I can get a replacement windshield for it. Dave Dave, just remember that you will need either a center mirror or side mirrors to see behind you, unless you will be the fastest out there and therefore no need to look back.:jester: When I took my windscreen off I rigged up a mounting for a couple of cheap ebay sourced motorcyle mirrors, http://www.ebay.com/itm/370119433866?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 (around $20.) I think I posted the results on here once before. Or you could mount a center mirror, but just try it out as with the low seating postition, you may want to have it mounted up higher than usual to improve vision around it. jlumba81
Another option is to use those windshield tear-offs that race cars usually use.

Dave Hi Dave - After going through 3 windscreens on the Audi in 6 months and now needing another one after last week, I would take the windscreen off for preservation. My first track day in the CSR got very bad 2 star cracks from a stone and a bolt that fell off MichaelD's exhaust (took out an Exige's new slick and Yellowss7's new slick too from memory). So I needed a new windscreen from that instance. I have run aeroscreen/windkicker ever since then and never had a problem. I have never had any debris hit me other than very small fragments of tire kicked up from my front wheels (or off my front wheels!). Yes you will need to mount some mirrors but they can be worked out with your ingenuity (clamp on a scuttle, discreet mounting hole which is hidden once the windscreen is back on, etc.). Jude also has a good idea with the tear offs and there is a guy in mid-NJ that sells them. However, they will not protect from impact damage like what I got on the CSR - rock and stone. They will stop chipping/abrasion quite well. Edited April 9, 2013 by Croc
DaveD
Mike and Jude, Thanks for your input. I now know I MUST do something. I have had it at Summit Point 3 times and was lucky with the windshield. Probably due to running in the novice group. The majority of the cars were much slower and I don't think they tended to kick must stuff up. The traffic on track was more like driving on the street with normal traffic. I am really looking forward to driving on the track with others who are closer to my pace. That is if I can keep up! I plan to pull the windshield off this weekend and start planning on how to fabricate what I need. Do you know if it is required to have some sort of wind deflector, or do I mainly need to worry about mirror(s)? Thanks, Dave
Croc
Mirrors are needed but a wind deflector is not. My 1.5 inches of wind deflector is mostly ornamental as it does not deflect any wind from hitting me.
