Black out info

I have the anodized aluminum side exhaust heat shield and want to change it to black. Is the black version anodized, powder coated or what? Also what are the options for black rear fender protectors? Mine are polished SS.

Caterham make black Carbon fiber rear wing guards that look nice. Pricey though. You might be able to fake it with some carbon look vinyl over the ss ones you have.

Thanks, I should have said I'm not into the carbon fiber look, maybe mat black vinyl if no other options.

I used a 1/16" self-adhesive EPDM rubber sheet (McMaster #8610K2) for the rear wings. However, I made it only 12" tall and there are maybe 3-4 more inches on top of the wings where rocks hit. I should have made this taller. The rubber protects very well, is inexpensive, weather resistant, can be easily cut to size and replaced. It holds up to serious rock impact.

 

When treated occasionally with a little ArmorAll, is becomes a deep shiny black.

 

For the exhaust shield you can go to a surface treatment shop and get it brushed or blasted and black anodized. I paid for a similar size job a few years ago $50.

I had my splash guards sprayed with bed liner. I also had the underside of all four fenders sprayed at the same time to prevent star cracks. The splash shields still look good after 15k miles.

I went to Home Depot and bought some black vinyl shelf liner (or something similar). It adheres every well (to carbon fiber fenders) and it's easy to peel off. There is no adhesive on it - just have to apply it uniformly and rub out any remaining bubbles. Even after track use, I only change it once a year.

My windsheild uprights and exhaust heat sheild were clear anodized aluminum originally. I took them to a local anodizing shop and had them chemically stripped (back to bare aluminum). He returned them to me so that I could prep the surface - basically heavy duty scotch brite to approximately a 400 grit draw polish. They then black anodized the parts for me. They have held up well over time - the catalytic convertor will cause the black anodize to lighten a small amount, almost a reddish hue to the black. These shops generally work on a lot charge basis - you should be able to get this done for $75-100.

I used flat black undercoating on my fender shields. They look quite nice and hold up well.
