nick47
MoPho, that's not Internet advice. There's a huge difference between "this was my experience" and "this is how it is".
rikker
This is an awful lot of BS to go through, feel bad for you. I was under the impression that these types of problems occurred when titling/registering a new born for the first time, I know that there is a huge variance from state to state BUT I really thought that if you had a car was titled/registered first time in one state as say a 1967 model year that when you registered it in another state , even CA or NJ, that they would just accept and rubber stamp that, am I wrong here? You state that it was registered in OR as a 62 but that was not good enough in CA right now?
TurboWood
I'm a bit surprised by this as well. I believe CA has a law restricting the registration of cars from out of state with less than 7500miles. This was to prevent people going to Nevada and buying a car with no sales tax, but I too would have thought a car titled as pre-'73 from out of state (and at least 7500mi) would be good to go. How is the DMV able to distinguish between a real 60's 7 and a "replica" that is registered as a '60's by another state? Daniel
Manshoon11
I think the CHP knew it was replica by running the vin. The DMV started off accepting it as a 62. It has less than 7500 miles, but noone ever said anything about the miles, except to fill in the blank on the sheet. I called the CHP officer and left a voice mail, asking if it was possible to change it back to 62 lotus. With the volume of people registering their vehicles through satan's a'hole, you'd think they'd know how to do their jobs.
JohnCh
I ran into this issue when bringing my CA registered Westfield into WA state about 12 years ago. Prior to purchasing the car, I called to verify that it would be a smooth transaction given the car had been legally registered in CA for the previous 5 years, and was told "not a problem." However, when I showed up to go through the normal transfer process, they took one look at the Westfield and told me they couldn't do it, and I had to see someone ominously referred to as The Specialist. When I countered that CA had already deemed the car worthy for road registration, they eloquently explained "This ain't California!" The Specialist (aka The PITA) initially planned to deny my request, but eventually relented because WA state law was changing the following month to allow for my situation and he would have to grant it if I simply came back in a few weeks. Bottom line, each state is their own fiefdom when it comes to registration. -John
jimrankin
If I had stayed with my local San Mateo DMV I'd never have gotten a registration. Several trips, going nowhere) Thankfully a friend told me to go to the Cobra Club (these kit cars are what SB100 was written for) web site and I was able to download complete, and annotated with the exact DMV sections etc., instructions on what to do, bring and say. All the third tier SM-DMV supervisor said was "nothing on the web is true", do it my way and no, you don't qualify for a temporary operators permit, and yes, we are keeping your money Forgot who told me about going to the Los Gatos DMV and asking for "the kit car lady" but she sure saved me. Really wonderful person who took a couple of hours on the phone to Sacramento to undue everything done by the SM-DMV. She said I would never have been able to register the car the way they were classifying it. AND, she gave me a three month temporary operators permit and said come back for another when it runs out. She also advised me to come back a few weeks before the January SB100 releases because Sacramento was often negligent on doing what they were asked. Good thing because in the second week of December it was still in limbo so she called Sacramento again and walked it through, another hour of her time. Good news was that on January 2nd after only a few minutes with her phoning in I walked out with an SB sequence number. Check on this site and the Cobra Club sites for a friendly knowledgeable DMV in your area.

nick47
Okay, I was wrong again. The state of California is NOT out of SB100 certificates of sequence for 2013. I just got mine today. If they're giving them out in order, there's still a couple hundred left.

He said to change DMV offices and go straight to a manager. He then said that if anyone gave me trouble that he'd call them for me. That said, I should have my sb100 number next Monday. Gherkin
Make sure you get that CHP officer's business card, he sounds like a good ally to have "on the inside". I dropped the name of a local officer that I met through my FIAT ownership (I have a '69 600 and he has an X19). That seemed to make the process go smoother with the CHP inspector who was also a car guy, although smart enough to not be into FIATs... Compared to your journey they practically gave me my SB100/SPCN registration on a silver platter. It will all be well worth it in the end, this is for a long and exciting relationship with your 7. Landshark
Manshoon, I registered mine through the Santa Ana DMV office after working with their manager. While in the process, I was advised that the San Clemente Dmv office was the "Guru" with the SB100 process as there is a Cobra Manufacturer near that office. Hope it helps! TurboWood
Is there a reason you avoided the Torrance office (since your location is listed as Torrance)? That's effectively my home too when I'm not stuck in Shanghai. Daniel
Manshoon11
The time until an appointment was available was the initial reason.

Gherkin
Fantastic, congratulations! Make sure you bring everything that satisfied the DMV for the SB100 qualification to your BAR appointment. You shouldn't need to show it or have any problems moving forward but that's the only place I had any issue. The regional guy felt he needed to second guess the DMV. I just supplied him with what the DMV needed to confirm qualification. Part of my problem was that I admitted to purchasing the partially completed car from the importer. The ref assumed that I had purchased it more complete than I did and from a registered auto manufacturer. What I learned: Just answer the questions and be be careful to not talk too much about the fantastic new car you will soon be driving legally on public roads. You will get to do plenty of that at nearly every gas stop... Chris
Manshoon11
Thanks How long til I receive the paper certificate of SB 100 #?
Gherkin
The DMV should have handed it to you along with the paperwork to be filled out by the CHP and printouts for the BAR inspection. I left my first appointment with mine. The certificate doesn't look like much; yours probably has a box at the top with the following inside: Sequence Number 2013322 Mine also has my name, address, and reg info including a Vehicle ID Number of "CHPREFERRAL" Do you have such a form? nick47
Congratulations, Manshoon! It's all downhill from here. Gherkin, I think they've changed the way they do it. The DMV told me the certificate will come in the mail from Sacramento. What the DMV gave me was my registration application back with the sequence number written at the top, a couple of other numbers, and a date stamp. They also gave me an operating permit good through February. So I've insured the car and I'm driving it legally right now. Well, not right now because I'm at the computer, but you know. My experience was, the CHP assigned the VIN. It's permanent, it's on the car, and it's on all the printed forms I got back from the DMV. Next stop is the BAR, but I'm waiting until I get my actual certificate until I do that. Manshoon, did you get a temporary operating permit?
