rick r
Hello everyone, new to the forum and to Lotus 7s. This car is local to me, and I've seen it before a couple times at cars and coffees. It does look quite expensive compared to the other listings I see here, so I wanted to ask you guys what you think: http://www.newenglandclassics.com/cars/NE-1984-1/
Croc
Welcome to USA7s. That car has been for sale for a while but it has not sold. I have seen the car in person too. It regularly comes up in my search script results. Before you dive into buying a seven, particularly an original, it pays to learn all about them, how to identify an original (chassis markings, ID plates, changes/mods from original, etc.), as all of these greatly impact the value it is worth. You don't want any "stories" with a car just a nice clean well documented history, big file of paperwork and no disputes about its identity. Also, before you buy any car from a dealer it is critical to google them for their reputation, customer complaints and and quality rating with the Better Business Bureau. Its the same as checking out the feedback on an Ebay seller.
Kitcat
Rick: I sold a much nicer, tho similarly spec'd, Cat a few years back for $21K.This is a standard issue, modestly powered Cat. It has bench seats, not buckets, no headrests, and the roll over bar is mostly for show. Not clear if it is a 4sp, or a 5sp, Dedion rear suspension or not. Since it's not mentioned, my guess is it has neither of those upgrades. For that much $, you could get a lot more car (IMHO). Bruce K
The yellow Auto-Europe car was owned by an acquaintance of mine named Jeff. I saw this car run many times at Grattan Raceway near Grand Rapids MI. The car is very fast and well-sorted. I emulated Jeff's mirror configuration in my car. Jeff is an uber-tall guy - that's why the supplemental upper section welded to the rollbar - necessary to clear Jeff's helmet. A shorter new owner should be able to cut off the small top hoop and metal finish the bar back into stock shape. Auto-Europe might even be willing to do that for a new purchaser. Kit was a personal import from MNR Sportscars in England, see MNRLtd.co.uk for details. This company has a very high reputation in the UK and is supported in the USA by Fastcraft motorsport. Car has been built to a high road spec using a 5VY Yamaha R1 motor that had 5688 miles with no damage or road rash when pulled from donor. Engine has been fitted with sump baffle, uprated Barnett clutch springs and modifications to the breather system to allow for the different cornering forces experienced in a car application. The standard airbox has been modified to fit underhood and uses a GYTR air filter. Shifting is by mechanical paddle shift. Standard spec for this engine is 180 BHP, car was weighed in at 1080lb with tank of fuel, which puts this car at 6lb per hp. Ford Sierra 3.38 differential is completely refurbished with new bearings and seals. This is the preferred ratio for road use (hard to find) allowing approx 1000 rpm per 10mph in top gear. Driveshafts were refurbished units when fitted. Car is fitted with an electric reverse. Wheels are unmarked 7x15 Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 with Bridgestone Potenza RE11s all round in excellent condition. Front brakes are Wilwood 4 piston. Rear brakes are standard Ford Sierra disk setup (Ford Scorpio available in USA). Brake balance front to rear is adjustable via bias bar. Dampers are adjustable all round, and a feature of this car is the inboard front suspension setup. This car uses the Yamaha instrument cluster and everything works as it should including low fuel warning, temperature, trip meters and all normal diagnostic modes. Overall the bodywork is in excellent condition in Kawasaki green with black arches. Rear arches have expected stone chips. There is an area with some spider cracking of the gelcoat toward the lower rear tub when I pushed the car back into something in the garage. These cars are a little larger than a lotus or caterham seven, I am 6ft and have the drivers seat pulled forward a few notches - could go back another 3 inches, although you still need to be pretty slim to fit the seats. Car will be supplied with all build photos on a USB stick, Haynes manuals for the donor vehicles, various manuals for components used, some spares including a set of bumpers, manual wipers and other items needed for the registration process and a Battery Tender. I will also include a fiberglass wind deflector that could be used in place of the windshield, but it has never been fitted due to NY requiring a glass windshield for inspection purposes. Car is titled as a 2012 Custom, but was only put on the road in 2013 due to the time between initial application and getting through the various steps to get it road registered. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. I cannot arrange shipping but will assist loading if so needed. Thanks for looking. UPDATE I have had several questions regarding some details of the car so adding the most common information requests below: Rear end is IRS, open diff. Various LSDs are available, Ford made one for the Cosworth (but not this ratio), and there are aftermarket units. Car has not been tracked. This is the fuel injection R1 motor. Chassis is powder coated from the factory, not painted. Added pictures of suspension setup and chassis. Ride height can be adjusted if needed. Both front and rear is adjustable for toe and camber if you want to set up for track use. Sump is exactly same height as bottom of chassis (does not stick down). There is no separate " rubber cush drive" but the prop is a "Torque Resilient Tube" to absorb driveline shunt.
