For what it is worth it looks like it is a CMC chassis from those I have seen elsewhere. I appreciate an honest seller and this guy is spot on accurate. It only has coolant coming out the side pipe and the exhaust - so how bad could it be! Asking $5 in the title, if you read the text he actually wants $5000 firm. Decent price with a little wrenching and some front wings. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/5112723452.html Also needs a torque converter, according to the seller, no title bill of sale only, don't know if that is an issue. traveler501
I came close to buying the "arch motors" car that croc mentions at the top of the page. I passed because I want a road car to zip around with and this looks to be a touch closer to an autos / racer and I wasn't wild about RHD. The guy went down to $27,500….the twin-cam is newly rebuilt and showing 200 psi, the Arch Motors frame has checked out intact….low miles, good looking car, dry sump, 40 DCOE's…I have no dog in this, just passing it along. Here is a link to a ton of pics if anyone is interested. John ted@automaniagp.com PS about that "miata" car…the guy says its from Demon motors in Canada. Since it's never been titled before, would that be impossible to register here? I'm still shopping around, and have come across a couple of these deals but skeptical since they wouldn't fall under the 25 year rule.
rx7locost
This popped up on ebay, Miata engine but they don't say who the kit is from. It's partially built "with lots of parts"?? traveler501
About that Oregon 7, I almost bought it a couple weeks back and discussed it at length. My main objection is that it seems the engine was rebuilt over a decade ago and never broken in properly. It was rebuilt with high compression and then taken out for a short joyride every once in a while, they're saying only 50 miles since the rebuild. Also no seat belts or other updates. It seems to have good potential as an autocrosser though. I see it's listed with a Reserve…the seller was firm on $27,500 at the time and I would expect the reserve to be close to that. I've thrown out my notes at this point, but there were a few other "niggles" that popped up. The tires were quite old among other things.
Croc
Hi Traveler501 - That is excellent feedback on the car. I think it is steep money at that price and with those things to fix and possibly having to add transport costs on to get it home to you. The fact is that seller started at $34k asking price and has been dropping steadily in the year it has been advertised for sale. I think you made a good call. traveler501
I agonized over it quite a bit (and yes, shipping was quoted as another $1500. One of the issues was that the shippers wanted to be able to start and move the car throughout transit and it has a dry sump! The alternative was $100 more and the threat of damage as they winched that frame off and on. Neither solution made me comfortable). I still might have gone for it despite everything but the RHD was one too many aggravations for me. Nonetheless I have continued to wonder if I made the right choice….I really appreciate your supportive comment! PS one more piece of info for anyone interested. The dealer brokering the car won't allow any contact (for further information) with the actual owner until a contract is signed and $500 deposit handed over. slimm
I still might have gone for it despite everything but the RHD was one too many aggravations for me. It's funny how people differ, even when you narrow down the category to car guys who want a Lotus 7 clone! The RHD is a major plus for me as I look for a car. ( want as British a version as I can get, and having owned a RHD Morgan, I'd say it is hardly ever an inconvenience on such a small car. The other factors you mentioned in your post are definitely a turn off for me though. I need a car that is close enough for me to trailer it home myself, if not local. Good luck in your hunt ! Kitcat
The "Oregon" Caterham is pretty old. Caterhams have evolved since that version. Reasons I think its an $18K car, at best, include: solid rear axle, 4sp, no weather package, short cockpit, bench seats, modest power. Toss in the RHD and it seems way overpriced. For that $ you should get a late 90's-early 2000's Cat, likely with a Zetec. Edited July 26, 2015 by Kitcat
Croc
Kitcat - The seller was trying to play off that it is an original Lotus 7 S3 chassis from Arch and therefore work 70%-80% of a regular Lotus 7 S3 of the same era. I see his logic but I just don't agree. An early model Caterham is a best value analogy with an additional premium for having the twin cam engine (over say a crossflow) - that should put it mid-$20 at the very most. traveler501
Thanks for your thoughts…I think you're helping me narrow my search (I actually would love a bench seat, 4 sp, modest engined car, short cockpit…very traditional S3 and if that's $18k all the better :hurray: I've been dreaming of getting a 7 ever since I was a young kid and saw a shiny new Mk VI drive past on the road. Now that I'm retired, it's time! Thanks again….
Croc
On Fleabay. Been on this thread before. Not sure what to make of the unpainted ali on the vents on the bonnet plus the scuttle? Sigma engine would make it slightly more difficult to import legally from Canada since that is an under 25 year old engine despite the chassis. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Other-Makes-Caterham-Lotus-Super-7-/181813372442?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2a54ebe61a&item=181813372442 Currently bid at US$20k with 2 bids and 3 days to run. I hate sellers who just cut and paste wikipedia into the ad and provide no effing information about the car they want to sell. Classic flipper who has no clue what he/she/it has. Rant over. scannon
If that front tire really has only 862 miles on it, all those miles must have been on a track at speed. The car is listed as a 1989 model, has the Sigma engine been around that long? I thought it was a fairly recent engine. I looked it up on Wiki and the Sigma engine was introduced in 1995. Maybe the car was not assembled until the Sigma was available. Edited July 29, 2015 by scannon
Croc
Skip- The Sigma started being put into Caterhams around mid-2000s from memory. I was initially thinking it was a later transplant with mileage on the new engine shown. But then that would have made it originally a crossflow and more questions are raised by the photos then.... Edited to add - I just realized the exhaust is on the wrong side for the Sigma engine. There is no engine pic to check. Probably a Zetec since they look sort of similar to a Sigma and that would put the exhaust on the correct side. Was there a 1.6L Zetec? I can recall a 1.8L and a 2.0L but not a 1.6? Croc
A few on Fleabay today: 1987 Caterham 7, which looks to be titled as a 1968 Lotus 7, located currently in RI This particular example we have here is one of the reproductions made by Caterham. The chassis and the majority of the components exchanged hands three times, before the car was completed. The third owner concluded the search for all the parts and went on to build the car from the ground up. During the build the owner looked to make a truly rebuilt Super 7, they went about this by sourcing the correct Ford 1600CC Crossflow engine, which was rebuilt back in the summer of 1987. The correct transmission was found in June of 1987 from a shop in Colorado. The correct rear end of the car was one of the components included in the sale of the chassis. This Super 7 runs and drives flawlessly, as if it had just rolled off the factory line. The paintwork on this car is in great condition with only a few, very minor imperfections. There is a 3M-paint protection film applied to the nose, front and rear fenders of the car. There are hundreds of pages of documentation that go along with this car. The owner was extremely thorough in the build of this car, and every piece of documentation, big and small has been documented. It is quite possible you will never come across another Super 7 build that is as correct and well documented as this one. This car is a once in a lifetime opportunity; don't let it fly past you. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lotus-Other-/301694618244?forcerrptr=true&hash=item463e668a84&item=301694618244 Its still not as shiny as Bball7754's crossflow but I am sure he would volunteer to polish it for you! He had the top, side curtains and tonneau cover made locally in Cheshunt by the local Roll Royce dealer. He drove it around England and France and then shipped it home to San Diego in 1965. Imported painted French blue, then resprayed British Racing Green (have pics); another respray to present black lacquer. I purchased the car in 1974 and have street driven and raced it; never any damage to the body or frame. The car has been in dry storage since 1987. The car is in very good original condition and needs cleaning and assembly of the 109E engine and drivetrain to the new owners specs.
