Seven Insurance

Croc:

Good question-what do I do if I run over someone at the track and I have no insurance? Hopefully the waiver that we all sign upon entering the facility wld cover me?

What insurance protection is available to me? As you note, I can insure the car but that doesn't cover liability (running down a pedestrian while doing donuts in the paddock).

Maybe my homeowners policy?

Mike - I would not want to test that waiver in a court of law if there was an incident - you could be wearing the costs. You want to talk with your insurance agent about an "excess liability" policy. Make sure there is no exclusion for HPDE or driving a non-registered auto off-road on private property. At least this would kick in to defend you should there be a problem.

I agree about the waiver protection, better to have than not, but unclear how much real protection it offers and I get to hire an attorney on my nickle to find out.

Will take yr advice and call my agent. I have an "umbrella" plan that is supposed to cover all the loose ends.

When I called Hagerty to see about getting my newly-built Seven insured in NC I was given a quote but subsequently turned down. I then went to my regular insurer Nationwide, which turned out to have a special relationship with Hagerty. I did eventually secure that insurance, at a lower price than the original Hagerty quote.

If you can't get insurance directly through a specialized insurer, try sneaking in through a major company like Nationwide. This may be peculiar to NC but it's worth asking about.

Thanks to Crankey for bringing up the subject and to Croc for his insights. I had a prang at a HPDE event (Willwood brake pedal failure) that ended up costing me about $50K as my Hagerty insurance did not cover track events. Is there a HPDE insurance that covers medical expenses as well as car costs? To be honest the medical side of the equation is more important to me than the car. The car is cheaper to repair than I am.

I want to get out to play again next year but I would want to get coverage for injury in the event of an accident. I think we all accept the risk of damaging our cars when we put them on the track, but I never thought seriously about the cost of personal injury.

My medical insurance only covered a pittance and I now have to find an alternative carrier.

Any tips on where to look? Is a track injury looked upon as a "sporting injury"? What should one look for when looking for health insurance that will cover trackdays?

I think this is a subject that many members of this forum would benefit from. If anyone has any input I am sure I am not the only one who would be interested in hearing from you.

Hopefully I will be out with you all at NJMP next summer.

Cheers_

Dermot.

Regular medical insurance is pretty close to a "no fault" policy and generally covers all injuries, regardless of cause. Did they have a specific reason for only covering a small portion of your expenses (non-traditional treatment, out of country, too much massage therapy, etc)? If they did not give you a written explanation, it may be time to ask for one.

To actually answer your question, HPDE insurance only covers physical damages to your car. Your best bet for medical is to have your car insured with a company that does not yet have a track exclusion. That way you are covered just like any other accident.

Hagerty gave me a quote too. Then the week my car was due to be finished they decided they didn't want to cover it. Apparently Hagerty didn't think I attended enough car shows or was a part of enough car clubs (seriously, that was their reason). I ended up with Grundy, and thought they were great to deal with.
