Hoosier Slicks

Wings Aviation

Recommended Posts

Yep, Wings Aviation's thread on whether or not anyone used 205-50 ZR15 slicks.....I'm guilty of high jacking the thread......my apologies. In answer, yes I ran them on my Miata wheels and although they worked, they WERE NOT IDEAL.....too much weight IMHO. Also, 13" wheels seem to work better with the 7 than 15" wheels for track duty. Having said that, Hoosiers are great tires and the SM6 (205-50 15) is a great tire.....on a Miata.

No problem, it's fun seeing what everyone else does. I should have it setup with the new front fenders next week and I'll post a picture. Just short on opportunities to run the car to test the slicks out.

Thank you for being understanding...........I get all excited about a subject, then I interject my own crap, then...........well you know, I've just highjacked the thread.

The good thing about the SM-6 Hoosiers is the price is kept low due to the competitive need for Hoosier and Toyo to remain in the ball game. The bias ply slicks in the 13" sizes run $244 ea for the 20.0x9.50-13, or almost $50 more. The 22.5X10.0-13 was quoted at $277. The good thing is the 7 will run on the tires all year so they are durable on these lightweight cars.

Yep, 2.0 Duratec with a bit of a turbo and some other bits, straight pipe isn't as loud as you might think, can be a bit bright on over run. Bunch of other fun stuff in the hangar but no more 7 ish stuff, yet.......... Looking forward to trying out the Hoosiers, judging by the number of rocks they threw at me driving from one building to the next, they are pretty sticky.

Hey Klasik -

Can you please tell me what size tires you have on the car in post #14?

thank so much!

dave

The back tires are the 22.5X10-13 Hoosiers with an Aero 10X13 wheel and a 4" backspace. Don't duplicate that, it rubs on the rear wing. Wheels need to have 5.5" backspace to keep the tire inside the lip of the rear wing, or need to set up the suspension differently..............tighter sway bar or move the rear axle back about 3/8" inch, or both.

On the plus side, at Roebling coming out of turn 9 I was creating enough tire smoke to blind the guys coming up behind me and kept them off my tail for a while:hurray:. Then I got black flagged :ack:

Thanks - I've got a Westfield and I'm thinking of going with the 20x9-13's for solo work and just wondered what you were running.

thanks for the info -

Hi Dave, I use to run the 20 inch hoosiers when I autoxed and they worked great. When I started tracking the car I noticed that the 20 inch tires were limiting my top end as they are only 64 inches in Diameter. Fine for autoxing but I moved up to the 22.5 inch ones for the track and with a 71 inch diameter they are closer in size to the original Avon CR500's that they car came with.

Tom did it correctly in using a 5.5" BS wheel which kept from having interference with the rear wing. I, on the other hand, failed to ask enough questions and got the 4" BS wheels. Tom is a much better source of information on these cars and what wheels work. I can tell you what won't work.

I hear you. I'll only use these tires for solo so I'm not too concerned about top end.

Thanks for your input and thoughts.

Guys

Since we are talking about tyre choice, I'm having Santa deliver a set of 8x13 rear and 6x13 front Apollo wheels. I had the intention of mounting ZZRs and now wondering about setup. What front camber and toe in or toe out should I shoot for to maximize the handling of the car and optimize wear of these types?

Also, Ive been running cr500s (195x45x15) on the 4 corners and although I liked how balanced the car felt , I remember significant understeer in the bowl at njmp. After reading this thread, I'm now wondering if going for wider types in the back and slightly narrower types in the front will exacerbate the issue. What do you think? Will additional front camber with Zzr correct the understeer? Would adding nose cone aero fins (like the r500 or the CSRs) help with downforce?

Thanks a bunch for your advice

I have a set of the nose canards that I've yet to install but I'm doubtful that they are going to produce significant results at all but the highest straight line speeds. I'm hoping to position them along with some other small mods to redirect air around the struts which are aerodynamic disasters. It seems like you can dial out some of the understeer with various setup tweaks however I think there is an inherent tendency toward understeer with these types of car. It's a balancing act with my particular car because I'm trying to improve rear grip for traction but the more rear grip on the rear proportionally over the front increases the understeer. I'm hoping to get out early in year to play with some setup changes, I too would be interested in hearing from some of the more experienced out there about their setups......

I agree, not sure how effective these canards will be but wonder if others have experienced a change in car handling by installing these nose cone canards. For more drastic aero effects, I think Mog Racing offers aero deflectors that snap on the front A arms to help with downforce and aerodynamics. I think croc has them on his 300 hp orange monster but could be completely wrong.

Hi Seb, PLEASE don't confuse me with Croc. :jester: Yes, Karl did load up on the carbon on the Orange car. He does have the whiskers as well as carbon wing things on the front wishbones. Can't say what effect if any it has as I'm still afraid to push the loud pedal down all the way. :jester:

If you get rid of those cycle wings and put on some clams you can try out a set of my 10 inch hoosier's and see what a car that sticks is like.

Merry Christmas.:seeya: Tom
