Duratec tuning shop in SF Bay Area?
KnifeySpoony replied to NecronomiconJules's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I know that Hasselgren builds and tunes duratecs. Not sure if he does chassis dyno tuning or not though. I'd he curious to know what you find as well. I have pondered going unlocked ECU and custom tune. -
The Regular Summary of Classified Ads of Se7ens Found For Sale
KnifeySpoony replied to Croc's topic in Cars For Sale
FWIW I routed my side exit exhaust to the rear with a leftward-pointing tip to try to pass sound at Laguna; I actually gained a dB lol. I also have a "trackday" exhaust from Caterham with second rear muffler (along with larger, cat-containing main muffler), but have never installed. I'm running a standard muffler with decat collector. At least half of the noise is from the intake so I think it's a losing battle. I always wear helmet/plugs, same as on bike. -
Did you heat cycle them prior to first full session/race? These feel so soft I think they may benefit from a proper heat cycle.

New hesitation at part throttle on 420R
KnifeySpoony replied to KnifeySpoony's topic in General Tech
Yes I can hear the barrels slamming onto the idle stop without limitation. I suppose the idle stop could have moved, but I think that's unlikely given the fact that the TPS voltage had shifted the other way previously. -
New hesitation at part throttle on 420R

Did another slightly longer test drive. Pulling smoothly. However, after car got warm, the idle speed crept up to about 1800rpm. Checked the TPS idle voltage and it had predictably crept down to 4.55. I have ordered two more genuine Ford TPS units. Hopefully I can get one that is reliable... -
Import from UK/France to California
KnifeySpoony replied to ianashdown's topic in General Sevens Discussion
How are all the JDM cars getting reg'd in CA then? -
How much does that lump weigh?

AFAIK the 420R (with it's dry sump) is not possible to have a "proper" PCV setup. I think you just need to have something in place that will pass inspection when you go to the BAR. Some of us had nothing and still passed...

Tires delivered. Wowwwwww these feel soft sitting in the garage. Do these need a proper heat cycle for durability? These feel like I will use half the tread just driving to the track...

My Driving Impressions, Thoughts and Questions
KnifeySpoony replied to rider's topic in General Sevens Discussion
There are no smog checks or inspections for bikes in CA. If the bike was 50 state legal at time of sale, then you have no issue. If not, then the bike needs a minimum of 7500miles on it to be able to import to CA. -

Do you need to smog late-model vehicles upon bringing them to CA? For new cars sold in CA, there is no smog checks for the first 8 years. -
Oh also his inside info suggests that either Avon motorsport tyres has a buyer, and/or that another tire manufacturer is going to make our 13" sizes. (185/215).

I ordered a set of 333s. The guy at Roger Kraus seemed to think that they are faster than the A24 but wear better. Life should be somewhere in between the A24 and A64. He said they really need heat, so was worried a bit when I told him I drive to/from track. He told me to be careful lol. I guess I'll find out. Also, RIP my wheel bearings...

Shifter is remedied by getting the knob to sit lower. The hole in the knob is pretty deep, just need to tap the threads a little deeper and screw it down more. Or just twist it hard and let the steel shaft tap its own way into the alu knob like i did. Solved the issue completely for me. -
I know the key is a monster. Chapman would is rolling over on that for sure.

Hmm that doesn't look like adding lightness to me ...

Looks like a nice design. I bet you could sell those...

New hesitation at part throttle on 420R
KnifeySpoony replied to KnifeySpoony's topic in General Tech
I reached out to Bruce Beachman for some advice - we went through all the usual suspects, but he was sure to impress upon me the importance of TPS idle voltage. Which, of course, was the first thing I checked, but I didn't realize that being off just a few hundredths of a volt could induce such behavior. Also the replacement TPS I put in had idle voltage that wandered a bit and had excessive hysteresis. I swapped back to the OEM TPS and at 4.62V seems to be OK again. Will give another report after proper test drive. -
How many days you think you will get out of them?

New hesitation at part throttle on 420R
KnifeySpoony replied to KnifeySpoony's topic in General Tech
Seen some threads on blatchat. Some people with similarish symptoms from throttle body imbalance. My throttle bodies are visually balanced at idle and wot, but haven't tested manometer. Worth doing? -
I actually have a spare ECU sitting here that I am going to flash and then swap in to see if it's an ECU issue. Hope to do that this weekend. Next step will be injector troubleshooting. Thinking about it, I can't help but think this issue is some sequelae or somehow related to a prior high RPM high load misfire I had previously, that was caused by a broken coil loom wire to coil on #4. Relatively soon after fixing that, this new misfire appeared. Perhaps that first problem caused some type of damage to the injector or ECU coil driver? Seems like an odd coincidence otherwise.

Looking for MBE 9A4 ECU to borrow in Bay Area
KnifeySpoony replied to KnifeySpoony's topic in General Sevens Discussion
I inquired with SBD and this is what they said: " We have been doing work for a Caterham Agent in the UK who specializes in all Caterhams and we have been commissioned by them to resolve issues on the Caterham 620R and 420R. Both these cars run digitally controlled fuel pumps and a strategy that was originally created for them by Caterham in our opinion is definitely not ideal. The fuel pump was never controlled correctly. This could be the issue you are having with your vehicle. Because the work was carried out for the Caterham Agent and paid for by them the ECUs and strategies have to be supplied by them. We can supply unlocked ECUs but we cannot supply the components and map strategies that are designed to overcome the shortcomings of the standard vehicles. So because of above, yes you could buy an unlocked ECU but it is unlikely to be your problem. The reason the 9A4 is having to be replaced is because some of the components within the ECU were discontinued at short notice and therefore MBE have brought forwards the 9M4 which was not going to go into production until 2024/25. This means MBE have had to condense two years worth of work into a few short months. They are nearing the end of the development and testing stage and we are hoping to receive the first batch of ECUs in the first week or so. The first batch is already sold, but the second batch should be only a few weeks behind. At this point we should have full stock of ECUs and there should be no delay issues at that time. Initially the 9M4 will work in the same way as far as the user is concerned as the original 9A4, but within a few months the strategies within the 9M4 will become more advanced and software upgrades to the existing 9A4 will stop. So having the new ECU is a much better option for the future. Best regards SBD" -
Sorry, can you translate for an electronics idiot - I don't know what B+ refers to. I assume you're saying the key needs to be in the on position to test for ground on ignition and coils?

FYI resistance was check with ECU plugged in, kill switch on, but car's ignition/power off.
