While running some errands today I stopped off for gas in our little town of Erie, CO. While gassing up the Se7en a truck stopped at the next pump and a small boy comes running around, spots the carbon fiber whiskers on the nose cone. Stops dead in his tracks.
He calls for his dad who walks around the pumps and sees the car and the whiskers. We strike up a conversation and he introduces himself as Jim McCutchen. The name sort of rang a bell that became clearer when he said he used to make kit cars, claiming to be the second person to clone the Cobra. He made about 50 of them and still has his personal Cobra, now with a 700 hp Chevy big block.
It turns out he lives in the same subdivision as I do at the far end. We exchanged addresses and he will be coming over for a ride and I expect to get one in his Cobra.
The reason the kid got more excited about the whiskers than the car - Jim is now making carbon fiber parts including rotor blades for helicopters. I need to explore this further.
