  1. That car incites sheer car lust in me. Since it needs paint, BRG and yellow would make it an outstanding car. It's only missing the hump behind the driver's head to make it irresistible. Gotta keep a tight grip on my wallet or I'm going to do something foolish...
  2. It's been quite a car intense day. I started with our local C&C where there were 40 cars including a Tesla, a 1954 Aston Martin 2.4, an AC ACE, a few Ferraris and other assorted cars. While there I got my first ride in a motorcycle side car, a Russian built clone of the BMW Boxer. There was a BMW 2002 that someone bought on ebay out of Europe, the car has only 10,000 km on it and looks perfect. It was miscatogized and he paid less that $5k for it. Although that Bristol engine in the AC ACE looks like a DOHC motor, it is actually a single cam in the block with pushrods. If you look closely at the head you can see horizontal pushrod tubes between the carbs. The valves on the near (intake) side are acutated through a pushrod from the cam to the exhaust side rocker box which has a rocker arm that changes the directions from vertical to horizontal, then a short pushrod between that rocker arm and the one in the other rocker box that actuates the valve.
  3. It doesn't look like Alaskossie will have his car finished in time but he plans on being here for the BBQ on the 9th. Any time he has in Colorado has to be spent on finishing the car as he plans to drive it home to Alaska in August. Bob Simon is bsimon on this forum. I haven't heard if he is still planning on doing the tour. Bob? Skip
  4. Hey, a chance to bomb them all at once! I have a decal that says "Objects in Mirror are Losing" but I don't have a mirror large enough to put it on.
  5. Do not eject above 300 KIAS? Where are you going to find 300 Kias to eject above? Just what does this mean?
  6. The tour is getting closer now, who is in and who is out? I'm in and will be bringing the Caterham, one way or another. The doc and the PT both cut me loose last week and I have been driving the Caterham frequently. :D:D I have invited Jeff Ball (a constructor and former owner of many Caterhams and in whose garage Alaskossie's Seven is being built) to come along and share driving with both my Caterham and the Miata with trailer. If he can't make it I will be looking for someone else to share the two cars. I'm looking forward to having a yard full of Se7ens at my place on the 9th of July. Skip
  7. None of the above. I vote for Franken7 or some derivation of it. Frankn7 maybe (to keep it to 7 letters/numbers)?
  8. There have been a couple of all black Se7ens on this forum in the last week or two.
  9. Kiwi, By torsion bar, do you mean an anti-sway bar that connects left and right suspensions to prevent leaning in a corner? If so, the Lotus 7 and early Caterhams had the bar as part of the upper suspension. It replaced the front part of the upper A arm. Later Caterhams have separate sway bars. I don't recall seeing any that didn't have them on the front. My Caterham has a rear one as well. On this side of the pond, a torsion bar in an automobile usually means a replacement for a coil or leaf spring, it is a bar that is twisted to provide springing for the suspension. Not too many cars use them these days, it was common on Chrysler products in the 60s and 70s. Early VW Beetles and Porsche 911s had them too. Skip

    LOG 29

Please put some names with the faces we are seeing in the pictures whenever possible. That bare ali Lotus 11 almost stopped my heart when it came up on the screen. The red one is damn sharp as well.
  12. That one will fit because you will have to drill and countersink your own holes to match your hub. If you are not set on suede covering, I have the original MOMO that came on my Caterham for sale, it will fit the hub and has a nice padded cover over the metal hub and spokes. It was removed from the car before I put it on the road. I also have a used Momo-lita wheel for sale. Skip
  13. 16" x 5 wheels & 205x45 tyres? 5" wheels seems a tad narrow for 205 tires, probably a typo as the 16" wheels from Caterham are 7" wide. Price on Application - anyone want to apply for the price?
  14. Build the engine to take boost and turn it up to whatever it takes. F1 was getting much more than that back in the 1.5 liter turbo days. As much as 1,500 hp for qualifying and 1,000 for the race engine. Skip
  15. I installed one of those detachable steering wheel kits on my SV a couple of months ago. It is all you need. I really like it as it makes it much easier for me to get out of the car with my damaged right shoulder. The downside is you don't want to leave the car with it on as someone can easily steal the steering wheel. That means lugging it into restaurants, etc. Your existing steering wheel should fit the hub although if you have the horn button in the middle of the wheel I don't think the slip ring will work with the detachable wheel hub and you may have to put a horn button on the dash. My SV already had the horn button on the dash. Check with CAT USA to find out for sure. Caterham USA is a good place for parts although sometimes you have to keep calling them to get the info you need. Skip
  16. I think trying to get by with a cheap, undersized trailer is like buying a cheap helmet. How much is your head/Seven worth? I've been through 5 different trailers with my Seven starting with a borrowed single axle with no brakes. Almost lost it, the Seven and the Legacy GT tow car on a long downhill run. Then I bought an 8 x 18 aluminum tilt bed trailer from H&H. Dual axles with brakes on all four wheels. Great trailer and it towed so much better but a little overkill for a Seven or even a Miata. Easy to load and unload. Then I decided I wanted a smaller, enclosed trailer so I sold the H&H bought and enclosed race car trailer custom built on a flatbed trailer base. It turned out to be a POS so I sold it. A nightmare to tow when loaded. The next one was a 7.5 x 15 enclosed United I bought used. It was heavy and did not tow well either so I sold it. Finally, I found a used '08 Haulmark Low Hauler designed for motorcycles. It is a 7 x 14 and a good fit for the Seven. I've towed a couple of Miatas in it and they fit but you can't open the doors so you have to climb out over the doors. This is the best towing by far of all the trailers I've used. The top is 20" lower than the United and it has a V-nose. Gas mileage went from 7 mpg to 12 mpg. The lower height means I can't stand up straight in it but it is not that difficult to walk around in, just keep your head bowed (as you should in the presence of a Seven ). An enclosed trailer makes a secure garage for the car when traveling and a good place for shelter from the rain or sun at the track.

    SR71 Fans

There is an SR-71 at the Air Force museum at Hill Field aFB in Ogden, UT. The first time I saw it there were no barriers and we were allowed to walk under it and touch it. An awesome experience. Thanks for sharing this. Skip
  18. I don't keep track, the receipts go in a drawer. However I just received a new Soft Bits for Sevens half hood and half doors yesterday. A little over $300 for both delivered across the pond via DHL. Took the first drive with the half hood this AM. It cuts down the buffeting of the left ear to a very acceptable level. More than I was expecting. OTOH, getting out of the car is more difficult with my bad shoulder but that will improve with time. Getting in is not a problem. I do smell the rear exit exhaust a bit more at certain speeds with the half hood on.
  19. Congratulations! Now the real fun begins. Your face muscles are going to get tired from all the grins. :D:D:D
  20. Happy Birthday to both of you. Skip
  21. Is it or isn't it torture? Think you could last 15 seconds without telling them whatever they want to hear?
  22. I'd love to take your car for a ride as well. Someday I will make it to an event and we can try each others cars.
  23. 301 RWHP, so maybe 321 HP at the flywheel. 1,350 lb with half tank of fuel. Using estimated flywheel HP, my car would be 4.2 lb/hp. Using RWHP from the dyno it would be 4.45 lb/hp My car is a WIMP compared to Mazda's Franken7.
  24. Congratulations on the sale. Time to add lightness (and power).
  25. Goat, IIRC, the same problem Hank is having in LA will arise here in CO. A windshield and wipers are mandatory. It might get missed in the inspection but I recall that Keith had problems with that on his Locost when he first tired to register it. Check it out before you make a commitment.
