Tom, It's just collecting patina! Not to worry. The important part is that you are still driving it and enjoying it.
-
Tom. I am very glad to see you are driving the Seven again. I heard speculation yesterday that you would probably never drive it again, that the Seven would disappear into your shop never to be driven again. I see that is not the case. It makes me very happy to see you have it on the road again.

There was a similar incident a few weeks ago in the USA. Pilot lost a wing and came down on the ballistic parachute and walked away.
-
twobone, Thanks for the info. It won't work for me as I put the bracket with captive nuts on the car to avoid having to fiddle with nuts when changing from windscreen to the Brooklands screens.
-
I'm interested, can you post some pictures of how they attach to the windscreen frame?

Miatas control fan operation from the thermostat housing so the coolant will be much hotter there than in the bottom radiator tank. You either need a different thermoswitch or move the Miata switch to the hot side.
-
Aim one of them up and put it on a separate switch just for those idiots behind you that won't dim their lights.

Brace yourself before looking at the attached image. A pilot at low level has no control over his aircraft. It misses a crowd gathered for the air show and slams into four buildings. One can only imagine the horror of the occupants inside those buildings. .

I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space. That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting world. My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag. The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife as everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. Seems I have to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud. I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-ul-ating". You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then when I would make a right turn instead, it was not good. When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me. To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings. The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them in with me. Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do toot a lot." PS I know some of you are not over 50; I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are.

That combo of orange with the black pack looks great. Congratulations on your new toy.

I'm getting close to 10,000 miles in three years with my Caterham. I can't drive it to work because I'm retired and don't work but if I did have a job, it would get used for that. I use it for everyday chores like shopping, visits to the doctor, dentist and most anything. You should see the looks I get when I load up the passenger seat and the boot with groceries. But the most fun I have with the car is carving the canyons, doing track events and scaring the piss out of people I take for rides. I can't take it on long trips unless I tow it in the trailer as I have to take along my oxygen supply. I get some funny looks when I strap the portable O2 tank in the passenger seat and head out on the track. So far, no sanctioning body has refused to let me run with the O2. I've also been accused of plumbing the O2 into the motor, but hey, LOx is better than NOx. The car has a turbocharged Miata engine with a little over 300 RWHP but is very easy to drive in traffic, not at all finicky. People are always asking me if I worry about driving it on the interstate or other freeways. I tell them if something big hits me I'm dead, squashed like a bug but I don't think about it, I just drive defensively. I don't drive the car when it is raining or snowing although I have been caught out in a number of sudden rain storms. I tend to avoid cold days but not always.

Is it possible to swap the carbs front to rear to see if the problem moves to the front cylinders?

That looks like a classical CL scam, be very careful.

Correct, here is a picture of the Buffalo Bill Dam. Sorry about that.

What is the door hinge distance on a Caterham?

A couple of questions - thinking about a Caterham
scannon replied to Matt's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Those are not happy looking dogs! John, Do you happen to have a side view of that car? It looks to be the same color as my Caterham and I'd like to see how the Panasport type wheels look on it. Matt, $25K is pretty much the low end of the range for Caterhams but that doesn't mean that any that are priced that low are necessarily worn out or bad cars. You will have at least twice that invested if you buy a new one. You should also consider the other brands out there which are generally more favorably priced. Try to sit in, ride in or if possible drive as many different types as you can find before you settle on a particular one. -

All is well out here on the prairie and the Fourmile Canyon fire is 87% contained and nearly out. The news is now reporting that the fire was started by a long time volunteer fireman who lives in the area and lost his home. He had been doing fire mitigation around his home 3 days before the fire and had burned the slash. He was certain the slash fire was out, stirred the ashes and poured water on it. There must have still been some embers buried in the pile and the 50 mph winds re-ignited the fire. A new fire started Sunday in the foothills about 25 miles North of the Fourmile fire. It has burned two homes and about 650 acres so far. Aerial tankers on their way back to their home bases were recalled and got an early start on the fire.

The VIN tag states it meets all Federal requirements so perhaps this was originally sold in the USA. That should make it easier to import back into the states. It doesn't say if those are Canadian or USA Federal requirements. Can some one with another Canadian Porsche take a look at their VIN tag and see if it reads differently that this one or perhaps look at a similar year USA car and see what it says? Edit: I see from the above post that it is originally a USA car. Wish I had a spare $20k!

Any recommendations for really loud horns?
scannon replied to Ruadhd2's topic in Parts For Sale / Wanted
I've had one of those on my Caterham for three years. It wasn't really loud enough for me. It died last weekend and thus began an odyssey of horns that just ended today. My Miata has Italian air horns with 13" & 15" metal horns and a separate compressor. It is truly loud and has literally saved my life. I had obtained another set a few months ago from a friend. They are unused but at least 5 years old. I decided Monday was the time to install them. The first problem was where to put them and how to mount them. I tried a number of different options and actually made mounts for three locations. The final location was beside the engine on the driver (cold) side down low at the lower frame tube level. The first mount I made for this location didn't get the angles right as I was mounting the horns to the underside of the passenger foot well which is a 30 degree angle off vertical. Murphy was in attendance and things were going so badly that I had to walk away from the project several times. Parts and tools would disappear when I needed them. Working space was so tight I have cuts on my hands and arms. Coolant was dripping into my eyes as I had to remove the hose to the coolant catch tank and drain it but it kept dripping for several days. I finally got the horns mounted on the third day and started on mounting the compressor. Finding space for it close to the horns was a challenge. Once mounted it was proving extremely difficult to run the hoses to the horns. More cursing and bleeding and another walk away. When I finally got the compressor in and plumbed and wired I gave it a test. The horns honked but not nearly as loud as on the Miata. I had a look and decided that I needed to put larger inside diameter hoses between the compressor and horns as well as add another relay between the Caterham relay and the horns with larger wires. Getting the larger stiffer hoses in required removing everything and finding a way to get the hoses in place. When I tested again, the compressor would spin but no sound from the horns. WTF! I first checked to see if the polarity of the pump was reversed and making it run backwards. It was wired correctly. I then looked to see if one of the hoses had come off, they hadn't. I then tried the system again. Still no sound but when I let off the horn button, the compressor kept running. Tried the button but no change so under the car I go and unplug the compressor ground. Applying 80 psi from the shop compressor also produced no sound. Almost to the point of throwing tools and cursing profusely, I had to walk away again. Later that evening I went back to the shop and did some electrical trouble shooting. I found that the new relay had changed from a normally open condition to a normally closed and permanent condition. I also found that applying 12v directly to the compressor motor produced nothing. Nothing else to do but walk away again. Today I went shopping for new horns. I found another Ear Cannon under a different name, Bad Boy, at Autozone so I decided to use it. This horn is packaged under about a dozen different names. When I got home and back into the shop I decided to test the old horn that had failed on Sunday. I shot a little WD40 in the intake and applied 12 volts. It worked. Since I hadn't opened the blister pack on the new horn I decided to use the original. After removing the compressor and air horns and re-routing the wiring I found the mount for the Ear Cannon and proceeded to mount it on the car. When I tested it, it was back to whirring and making noise but very little horn sound. You may notice that the intervals between walk aways is getting shorter. I walked again and had some lunch. Now all that is left is to use the new Bad Boy horn. First I tested it with the circuit it will be using, with it hanging from the wires before mounting it. It worked once but not on the second try. The torque of its compressor had twisted it a bit and pulled a wire from its crimp connector. Fixed that and another test, this time successful so I went ahead and mounted it, cleaned up the area and got the car off the jackstands. I haven't driven the car yet but plan to this evening or tomorrow. The above does not come close to describing all the various events that caused delay and frustration. I estimate I have spent at least 20 hours on this project. I could have R & R'd the engine at least four times in that many hours. Below is a picture of the Ear Cannon and the other air horns. Sorry about the long rant but I do feel better now.
