You're going to hate me..... .
-
....or if she's anything like my wife she'll puke when you take a corner "Seven style" and never want to go in it again

Glad to hear you came out unscathed and with little damage. Hearing this was a reminder to go out and buy earthquake straps for my tv and glass model car case, now I just need to manage to install them before we get an Earthquake Do you normally get earthquakes there? Were you prepared (supplies, etc) for such an event? .

Caterham grill question - 7 emblem behind or in front of mesh?
MoPho replied to twobone's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Mesh doesn't really cut down airflow, but it is better than a rock taking out the radiator. I added the mesh to my car, initially put it in front, then moved it behind and painted all the posts and cross bars black except for the logo Here you can see both with the mesh front and back -
It was mine, some fellow Elan owners that knew my car had confirmed it. Not sure if he repainted the whole car, but he removed the number meatball, changed the bumpers back to the original silver paint and put the window frames and soft top back on it. Don't know what else he did
-
Was there a big announcement that was my car or something? LOL I had several people email me to tell me it was there, but it looks a bit different from when I had it so was surprised people recognized it

They're really good at picking the "wrong" dates to do these AX events
-
Kick ass! Looks great! Hope you have a speedy recovery and get back (pun) in the car soon

I drove one a few months ago, a really nice car, but there are a lot of better options out there. Obviously it is not particularly exciting compared to the 7, all that luxury and weight dumbs down the experience (and is the case with pretty much all exotics these days), but this one is more GT than sports car. Doors are really hard to close when you are in the car if you are not 6+ feet tall
-
I have driven one, albeit briefly on a big skid pad, so didn't really get to push it. I've had offers to try my friends but don't want to find out that I NEED one.... :banghead: My friend bought his already registered here ( I think it was one of the first ones here, he paid a lot for it), but it is the same procedure as I had to go through to register the Caterham. There are quite a few Atoms floating around in LA now .
-
I am not really interested in debating the semantics of what constitutes mid engine or rear engine ( like I said you could argue that it is mid engined ), my point was that the engine and all it's weight sits at the very back of the car Yeah, the Atom is considerably longer and wider than the Caterham, impressively, it is not all that much heavier (about 100lbs) My friend installed Ohlins on his and he swears up and down that it made a huge difference
-
That car has tricky handling and spins easily too to add, it has an engine layout similar to the atom, it just has more bodywork in the back http://www.sandsmuseum.com/cars/elise/information/press/magazine/magazine2005/datasheets.jpg .
-
You could certainly argue that it is mid engined, and perhaps "technically" it is, but the rear wheels are the farthest back part of the car and the engine practically sits on top of the wheels. The weight distribution on an Atom is 40/60 f/r, a 911 is 38/62 http://www.nutleysports.co.uk/ArielAtom-Orange4.jpg http://www.nutleysports.co.uk/ArielAtom-Orange6.jpg Not suggesting that the handling is bad, just that it is supposedly tricky at/above the limit like 911s, and according to many, they need a lot of dialing in from the factory suspension settings. Makes for good traction though .
-
Can you be more specific? There is probably close to a dozen or so Atoms running around here in SoCal. I only had a brief drive in one a few years ago, it was a Brammo/Ecotec car, and didn't get to drive it in anger, but it was pretty neat. My friend owns a proper UK built Atom (the one next to my car in the first picture) with the supercharged Honda motor (300+hp) and we go chasing each other through the canyons all the time. He has more than 100hp on me and is an ex professional race driver, not to mention he a bigger death wish than I do, so he usually sees me off. Most of the cars in the US were built by Brammo motorsports in Oregon and had a GM ecotec motor that was either 245hp or 300hp depending on spec. The cars are now being built by a company called TMI in VA and they've changed the spec a bit and are now using the Honda motors. They are extremely quick but are known for having tricky snap over steer handling since it is rear engined (think 911 Porsche), but the suspension is also infinitely adjustable and they can be dialed in nicely if you know what you are doing. As you can imagine, when we take both cars out together, it creates quite the stir, but I would say the Atom draws more attention, it is just so wild looking. It is also much bigger and wider than my Caterham. A while back we took a friend of ours who is a designer for GM out in both cars and he liked the Caterham better, said it was more raw and exciting http://www.websmileys.com/sm/sad/533.gif .

So what's the point of having this section? It doesn't really solve anything and will only make it worse as you know damn well there is no playing nice, heck, the guy above couldn't even make it past this thread without starting shit This is a car forum, there are plenty of political forums for these people to spew their crap on. :banghead: .

This little old lady calls 911. When the operator answers she yells, "Help, send the police to my house right away! There's a damn Democrat on my front porch and he's playing with himself." "What?" the operator exclaimed. "I said there is a damn Democrat on my front porch playing with himself and he's weird; I don't know him and I'm afraid! Please send the police!" the little old lady repeated. "Well, now, how do you know he's a Democrat?" "Because, you damn fool, if it was a Republican, he'd be screwing somebody!"

He first told the story on Jimmy Kimmel and then Top Gear Apparently it is true (at least to some degree), the story was making the rounds here in SoCal before he went on TV with it. Jay is a bit of a fixture in the SoCal car community, he is out nearly every weekend either driving around up in the canyons or showing up at the various car meets/shows. Back before I bought the Caterham, I was out in my Elan and he had chased me down on his motorcycle and pulled me over to have a look at the car (he owns two Elans and it is one of his favorite cars). What was really cool was my father just happened to be in town visiting me and was in the car, he couldn't believe it. Jay chatted us up for a good 20 minutes or so. http://www.mjswebgallery.com/elan/images/leno_V2.jpg .

Chrysler turbine car is not in any of the pictures, I can't post my shots but this is what it looks like http://www.autocasting.ru/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/62chrysler_turbine_car_12.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Turbine_Car .

Yeah, I believe Jay has over 100 cars in there and at least another 100 motorcycles, plus all the amazing artwork, memorabilia and steam engines. He claims he never sells any of his cars I think I am a bit over 12k miles now on the car :driving: .

Since the thread sort of veered off topic towards Leno, I posted a new thread with the story from my day at his garage http://www.usa7s.net/vb/showthread.php?p=43225#post43225 .
