Looking to buy older Caterham, or perhaps pre-lit Westfield
Croc replied to craig chima's topic in Parts For Sale / Wanted
Craig, Here is an idea that might work for you. There are two Japanese car sites https://www.tc-v.com/ https://www.goo-net-exchange.com/ Goo-net has the biggest range. Both have infuriating search interfaces which is why I have not included them regularly in my weekly post plus generally the prices are too high relative to US market so why bother. However, if you search "Caterham", "Westfield", "Birkin", or "Lotus" (because they misclassify Caterhams), then a bunch of options wil surface. They are usually all too recent or over-expensive. However, diamond in the rough examples turn up at decent intervals - for example https://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/LOTUS/SUPER_SEVEN/700050502330191022001/index.html Older Caterham at $18k. For the work needed on this example, I think price should be lower but you could try to negotiate by email by making an offer. Needs to be imported but they offer ro-ro shipping plus import services, you can get a quote on the site - factor that into the landed cost and see if it gets to your price sweet spot. At least two now-seven owners on this forum have imported to Canada to what seems like good effect. This approach works best for Birkins as the prices are so low. Birkin sold more cars in Japan than Caterham and Westfield so resales are lower. Cheers mike -
Ahhhh... so he's just happy to see those old ladies? :leaving:

What car did that come off? Obviously pre-war...

Definitely not related. Plastic dowels came out of the pantry. The Rover K series engine head gasket issues came from using panties. Both leak you know! :jester:
-
Rover K series engine used plastic dowels. It was easier to replace those - there was usually something in the pantry that could substitute.
-
Pour a glass for me please! The reason the braided line is likely leaking is that the inner rubber is not fuel safe. So over time it decays and eventually starts weeping through the rubber then through the braiding. So when you spec a replacement make sure you get a fuel safe line. As for replacing, Its probably easier with the tail shaft out unless you have small fingers. But I would contemplate the problem with another glass of bourbon first.

Shane - when did you last see your feet? A decade ago? To that point, was that when you last saw your old fella?

Thanks Paul - I am hoping work has calmed down enough next week that I can get to my garage next weekend. Want to work on my last Oz import which just arrived. Yes but that included bubonic plague from the buffet line. :jester:

Not heard if it sold or not? I heard a price through the grapevine and it sounded reasonable (plus negotiable) for how good this car is based on the assessment by some very experienced forum members who are personally familiar with the car. Get in contact - you could have a new toy for when we are allowed out of the house.

I would be careful with all the projections being thrown around. As someone who has to live and breathe statistical models for a career, they are all wrong. There are too many unknown variables which individually are alone enough to make the projected end results materially wrong. The key inputs to the model we are missing? Real count of infected people. There are a lot of people infected who have never been tested and we will never know until we test everyone. A lot of people infected early on just recovered. A lot of people early on did not but died of "other" causes. The exponential growth rates flatten out eventually as the disease finds its low hanging fruit of easy infections. I lived in Hong Kong through SARs. That scared me with its 10% death rate. COVID-19 does not. COVID-19 looks to me to have a real death rate much lower than 1% once all the statistical error corrections are factored in. One of my wonderful employees, clearly demonstrating his lack of productivity to his boss, developed his own COVID-19 model intended to calculate an individual person's mortality using all the relevant variables. He was pleased as punch to tell me I have a 1 in 435 chance of dying from COVID-19, paragon of virtuous health that I am. His mortality probability was likely higher given I was quite stressed that day. Its a good statistical quant model too but still excludes a bunch of qualitative factors. Still thats really good betting odds in my insurance world. However, there is a lot we don't know so we should be cautious - social distancing, society lockdowns, etc - make sense to slow things down as not everyone is as good looking and healthy as me. Anyway, the bigger issue is not really being discussed intelligently. When do our political leaders decide the cost of economic damage is greater than the population 'cost' (i.e. deaths) of the infections, and so restart the economy before the pandemic is over? My modeled bet that is somewhere around July based on when the second liquidity crunch kicks in for the current lot of businesses operating but impaired. Our strength as a country comes from being tightly integrated and strong as an economy. At some point the loss of strength in the economy becomes a bigger risk to the population (e.g. societal breakdown, critical supply shortage, cash shortages, rising disease/mortality risks from other causes) and so you have to make the call - which is worse? The pandemic is going to continue on into 2021 until we are all infected or a vaccine/cure has been developed and rolled out to 5 billion people. Its analogous to a war decision - you know people are going to die, whats the best way to limit that? Ok - time to post some car ads...

For a professional outfit, that is a rubbish ad and I have seen a lot. Thats the type of ad where if I was looking I just would not bother because I know the seller does not give a F%$# about things. -
I would give Palm Beach Intl Raceway a call and ask if they know of any good race shops nearby that are experienced in open wheelers for a corner weighting. Remember to throw a weight equal to you into the drivers seat before you begin.

Countertops are for women. I am concerned about my throat hygiene. I will try Vodka next. I have a bottle of Titos somewhere here. :seeya:

Sounds quite a reasonable suggestion actually. But let me finish up the Jack Daniels first, purely for medicinal purposes - it improves my immune system!

To stop the virus I recommend spritzing your mouth and throat, two squeezes of the trigger, every 5 minutes. Purely medicinal of course....
