    I have the NT-01s on my car and really like them. Not used them enough to know about heat cycles or wear but in terms of grip they do compare well with the RA1. A lot cheaper than RA1s as well.

    +1 on Wiley X. ANSI rated impact protection, fantastic field of view, fits in a helmet and does not allow any dirt in your eyes.

    Article from F1 journo James Allen saying that Fernandes wants to make a "sports car for everyone" that targets the 20-40 GBP market.     I'd recommend the more modern engine for reliability and ease of repair. Its probably easier to find a mechanic for a Zetec than it is for a Crossflow. Also while the 118 hp feels like a lot now you will get used to it very quickly and the crossflow will run into its hp limit quicker than a Zetec.

    The motives may be suspect but at least Tony Fernandes is an accoplised businessman. He may not make Caterham much better but I would trust him not to run it into the ground

    I'd also suggest that you try driving an Elise/Exige. Its not as raw as a Seven but is infinitely more practical and can be your only car (as long as parallel parking is not required). Plus you can easily get a used Elise for $25k.

    Primarily bought it as a track/autox car that I can drive to events without needing a tow vehicle. I do drive it around for errands, work and club events around once a week but since I always wear a helmet it does restrict the places I can visit. Since I live in California I dont have any weather gear on the car and just dont drive it during the month or two it rains. Mondo on these forums has an Ultralite with a windshield and full weather gear.

    If you want to go the S2K route you should talk to Loren (WestTexasS2K) at World Class Motorsports. He recently put up an Ultralite S2K kit for sale and may be willing to build it for you if the price is right.

    I bought my Ultralite with 235 width RT-615s all around. They were well above the wear bars but the compound must have heat cycled out because I was getting wheelspin in 3rd gear and had to carefully revmatch on upshifts. Currently on 235/275 Nitto NT01 and am very happy with them.

    RA1 last well past the wear bars and can be run all the way down to the canvas (in the dry). In fact their best grip comes when they are down to just 2 grooves.

    Have you considered taking Highway 1 for one or both of the legs? Much slower pace with wonderful scenery as well.

    I will likely be going for both days. I'd recommend buying the tickets via the GGLC since that will give you access to the Lotus Coral parking(if you drive your Seven): http://www.gglotus.org/ggshop/ggcorral.htm We also have breakfast on the Saturday morning before the event and a bunch of Seven owners joined us for it last year.

    RA1 are R-compounds and are a lot stickier than the TR1s - multiple seconds worth on the track.

    RA1s are much grippier and can be run to the cords without heatcycling out.

    Toyo RA1 is an excellent long-lived tire and has pretty good grip in the rain when running full tread.

    I have lots of catchin up to do - I've only owned 3 cars in my life (4 if you include the shared Lemons car) :-) My current daily driver is an Elise which I have put almost 60k miles on including trips throughout the West Coast from San Diego to Vancouver. It does have its flaws but it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it and is much more practical than the Seven.

    I believe she is still one of the two BMW ring taxis drivers. Not cheap but for 195 euro 3 people will get driven around on a hot lap of the ring by a pro driver in an M5. http://bmw-motorsport.com/ms/en/fascination/ring_taxi/buchen/date_order_start.html
