Several other 787's are also having issues. United Air just re-inspected 7 or 8 of their planes and found wiring issues. Only one 787 had the battery explosion and a minor cabin fire while on the Tarmac, no passengers & nobody hurt. I would worry about the lithium phosphate batteries stability. Yes, lighter, but with a risk.
-
Not sure if anyone saw this but a Boeing 787 dreamliner just had an explosion when one of its lithium phosphate batteries exploded and started a small fire. Fortunately the plane was on the ground and nobody was in the plane. I think I'll stick with the heavy Odyssey and leave the explosion to the demolition experts.:seeya:

I looked on that site. They have some really neat designs, makes for an angry looking 7. I really like the curved windscreen look and the side window treatment really changes the appearance of the 7. Something to think about for the future.

$19,500 for this pile of parts ? Seller appears to be an experienced eBay seller with 226 sales/purchases so I doubt he bought this to work on it himself, but just a guess. If he gets more than $8K for this, I'd be surprised. I think it's worth about $2,500 in this condition.

You may want to check this link; http://www.borla.com/products/induction/ I have the original TWM throttle body injection that Jon @ CaterhamUSA put on the engine he built for the original owner and they appear pretty meatty. I think Borla bought them out after my unit was made, not sure, but it works pretty well for non-turbo apps. Running pump gas, I'm pulling a little over 180 HP at the rear wheels and the torque curve is relatively flat. However, the cost of changing the ITB's added to the cost of re-tuning on the dyno can be expensive. If you need specifics on the ITB, let me know.

I never thought of it that way but you know, you're right. And the Seven won't argue with you, it won't complain if you take it to a cheap restaurant or look at another blonde (yellow 7??)................oh, the ramifications are endless. Wait, I'm married, 43 years of it, and I agree, I get more action from my 7. Ok, I give up, what else is going under the hood. It can't be big, so a nitrous bottle is out. Not enough room for a turbo or SC, too much noise for a big boom box. But just enough room for a little air compressor to power a set of air horns just behind the radiator. That's it, air horns.

I agree, its tough to cut anything out of these cars............where is the excess ? I'm driving on a hard carbon fiber race seat, my interior finish consists of aluminum panels (Ok, padded center tunnel), carbon fiber wings, carbon fiber nose piece, no heater, no windshield, 13 lb aluminum wheels.....................other than me going on a diet (not a bad idea), what can I cut ? By the way, I didn't buy the Odyssey battery, it came with the car from the original owner. And since it sits in a small dedicated space on the firewall, I would likely have to replace it with the same. What is the lightest weight these cars can get to anyway ?

I don't want to throw a wrench into this thread but let's just stop and think about the ramifications of the weight gain/loss and its relevance. My car weighs 1080 without my fat arse. If I save 12 lbs on this, and I add my weight to the 1080 (+210 lbs) I have 1290 lbs before the weight savings and 1278 after. That amounts to 0.9% weight difference. That is less than 1%...........you won't even know it, and I doubt you can record any difference in lap times. I know what the problem is.............it's winter time and you guys are up north and can't take your cars out. So cabin fever is taking over, you look for things to do, and you start to hallucinate :smilielol5:. Here is the solution, come down to Florida where you can drive you car any time of the year. Forget changing the battery, in the summer time you'll sweat so much your body will lose the 12 lbs and you'll save a ton of money on the battery. And by the way, my car has the Oddysey battery, not sure of the model but it starts fine every time.

What are they checking for in AZ ? In NC they have inspections but I don't think they stick anything in the exhaust to measure NO or CO2, and I'm not really sure if its more of a safety inspection than an emissions thing. Why would AZ be concerned with emissions ? All the illegals farting away from the tacos and enchalatas they eat would dwarf the emissions of diesel locomotive. It's a really neat state, by the way, and some of the areas in the northern half are breathtaking. If they give you any crap in AZ, come to Florida, they don't check anything here. You can run on bald tires with smoke belching out the exhaust bad enough to displace a mosquito spray truck and you're good to go. Brakes, lights, wipers, windshield..................none of that needed. Turn signals, no, a complete waste of time. Drivers aren't required to be able to see, hear or move either. 99 year olds driving around in a complete fog, never remembering where they were going, where they came from, or who the Hell they are................very user friendly here for those who couldn't drive anywhere else legally. Great state for doctors and lawyers.:ack:

Whether or not his pump is better is a moot argument since it doesn't appear they're available. Bill @ C-F-M was getting a new shop to produce them & it appears it never materialized. Not sure if anyone else makes one here or Europe, haven't been able to find anything.

Beautiful car. You're right, it won't last long. That is an incredible deal. New engine, new tranny, gorgeous paint scheme and the price of a kit without assembly or new parts. I'm committed to paying off the last part of our vacation home mortgage in order to be 100% debt free, and with the election results, I'm a little concerned for our future. Doggone it, I'm going to be thinking about this car and the opportunity being passed up.:toetap05:

The word I got from Bill at C-F-M is that most stock oil pump failures seem to be related to the use of non-stock undersized pulleys, but he says the HD oil pump is almost bullet proof. Getting the HD oil pump is another matter since they never seem to be in stock. For now, rev limiter is set @ 7200 rpm. Tom is correct in saying while you're racing, oil pressure gauge is rarely looked at. Shutting the motor down instantly isn't likely.

Mine squeals at start up as well. I changed the drive belt but it still squeals. I didn't realize the idler was the cause. I spun all the drives by hand when the belt was off, including the idler, and all felt fine, no binding. I found it strange that it never squeals afterwards, even at full load & high RPM. Only upon start up.

I had problems communicating with my Pectel ECU using a serial/USB adapter using 3 or 4 different drivers. I gave up & bought a used Dell laptop with a serial port.... Problem solved.

Who is going to LOG32 in Orlando? Want to share a room?
Klasik-69 replied to scannon's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Sebring is a great track but rough on cars. Full track is 3.7 miles, club track just over 2 miles. I've done hundreds of miles on it with a C6Z06 & Spec Miata, bought many tires & dozens of brake pads. That track will wear out a set of pads in two days. Bring some painters tape to protect rear wings & other prone areas. Orlando attractions are expensive with prices above $90/pp + parking, won't mention food prices. Universal Studios & Sea World are worthwhile, Disney more for kids with rich parents. Enjoy your stay. I wish I could have met you. You've helped me in the past with wheel spacers/adapters so I could my Miata wheels on the 7. -

I just googled LOG32 to find out what, where & when. I would have liked to go but I'm racing at the Talladega GP TT event that weekend. Bummer! I live only 55 miles from this event, missing out on the opportunity to see a bunch of 7's. that's a long drive for you coming from Colorado for a 2 day event. -
I have the ITG filter system on my Zetec with ITB's. The base plate comes without any holes so you can adapt it to your needs (Webers, ITB's, etc). Drawback is its size requires a cutout in the hood (bonnet). My base plate fits between ITB and stacks. If you're interested I can send you a picture.

He ran a sub 1:30 lap time at Road Atlanta, beat out every formula car except one. As you can see on the hill climb video, the man is absolutely fearless...............or he has a death wish. I was going to run the tail of the dragon but backed out due to .............well.................fear. That's right, I've driven it several times and if you mess up, two things will happen; a) you will smash up your car into the mountain wall made of solid granite like material, or b) you will go flying over the cliff and continue until you hit a very hard rock, or a tree, or both. Shade and sunlight areas provide grip and slick back and forth. Heikki is very good at what he does so likely the element of danger is minimized by his skill level.
-
Yep, that is Heikki running that car. I run in TT SCCA events with him but in a different class. He is very very quick, and fearless. His car isn't the cleanest looking rig around but it may well be the fastest. Plumbing on his car looks like a Home Depot kit but he can run with anyone out there, including the formula cars.

I've got to get over there and check out their cars. I'm across the state from them so it's only a 2-1/2 hour ride. I would think the LS7 like I have in my Z06 would make a nice package. Crate engine is around $14K so the difference between the LS1 and that should be around $8K. LS9 would be nice too, about the same price as a Cosworth 260 hp engine. GM engines are now about as bullet proof as any engine I have ever see. Ford engines are great too but they're physically huge with the OHC design. I saw the 5.4L Triton motor sitting on a pallet and thought it must have been a 10L engine by its size. I really like the styling of the rear wings incorporated into the body and how it flows. Front lights are a little weird but small is good, less drag. Really nice package for $38K or thereabouts.

Don't mean to hog in on your post but are all Caterham calipers AP calipers ? My 2004 Caterham has Caterham calipers. I've never tried to change the pads yet so I don't know yet if they pull out the top as you mention of if the caliper has to come off. They do say "Caterham" on the caliper.

I have a Zetec and when my crank sensor went bad, the engine was dead. No firing, nothing. You can check it easily with an ohmmeter. Remove the connector at the sensor and with some small alligator clip leads attach to the sensors connectors, then crank the engine and watch for pulsing. One other thing, the sensor on the Zetec is attached with a screw and mine had a couple of shims to make the proper air gap. If the screw came loose the sensor may be jiggling around and may cause the intermittent issues you're having. Good luck.

Grainger has the vibration isolator mounts like the ones you're looking for.

$8.90 a gallon............that's why Lotus/Caterham made filling up so slow and difficult. That way, the owner can savor the moment :jester: I wonder if they have any Ford F-150 trucks pulling an enclosed 24' trailer in Britain.............at roughly 8 mpg, the cost is over $1/mile. Is that the cost of free health care ?

I use a long skinny funnel to keep the flapper open and just pump slowly. It actually works better when using a gas can vs. the gas pump, but then again I don't drive my 7 on the road as much as you guys. I think that if the tank had a vent on the opposite side of the tank like those on boats, the fill would be quicker. A straighter filler pipe going directly into the tank would be the real cure but wouldn't be flush with the back of the car. Luckily these cars don't burn fuel all that quicly on the track, considerably slower on the road.
