Wanted-lotus elan.

I realize this is not a seven but I think it qualifies as a LSIS. Apologies if I offend anyone.

I may have left it too late, but before I get too old and fat to have one, I would like to find a Lotus Elan. I will consider anything from a parts car to a driver. A pristine show car would be wasted on me, I want to drive one. I think a number of our members are prior/current owners and if you have or know of one please let me know. I may also need Elan parts, depending on what I find, so if you have any spares or Elan printed matter please PM me.

Thanks.

If you want a completed car, the Morgan dealer on Pico in LA has a +2 for sale. Beautiful repaint and purportedly mechanically correct. The door gaps look a bit off to me but then I'm not an Elan expert.

I particularly like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161512527288

Huh, small world! That is our old car (my dad's, more accurately) and recently I'd been waxing all nostalgic and wondering where it went. They say you never forget your first: I did my 1st driver's school in that car, won my first race in it, and (one hopes) learned a little bit of racecraft along the way.

But... it's a little disheartening to me to see the state that it is in. It looks much more tired now than I remember and it is notably now missing the sturdy, 3-season "midrange torque emphasis" 168ish hp Vegher motor and that great Leeson dog box.

If anybody here is considering it, however, PM me... I still have test notes, some setup sheets, etc., plus the phone numbers of pretty much everybody who built / worked on the car up until 2005 or so. It was a good car, and though it is tough to be sure from the photos, it looks like it could be made so again.

Good luck with your Elan search and be very patient. I was looking for an Elan S1 for 2 years before I found one that met my qualifications for a realistic price. Wire wheel had a couple of original ones for sale this year in nice condition. Do an Internet search daily, because the good ones go fast.

Thanks guys for the help. To be honest I am not sure what I want . My preference is for the minimalist S1 cars although I can see the "plus" side of a +2. ( I am a big bugger). The money side will probably make the decision.

Mike,

I apperciate the leads. I am still looking. I am doing well. Bones and wallet healed from last "faux pas". I am hoping the wife will have healed by spring. I want to play with you guys again at NJMP if you are doing a June event. I can watch you streak by. Are you heading to OZ for Xmas?

Cheers-

Dermot.

Seasons Greetings to everyone.

Hi Dermot - We would love to see you back in the group at NJMP. I fly out for Sydney on Dec 20 and back into NYC on Jan 3. In the middle of that I am in Melbourne and outback Victoria so it is the usual rush to see everyone. Best wishes for the Holidays to you and your family! cheers mike

Hope I am not being TOO personal here but what "faux pas" were you referring to? I did a quick search but saw nothing...

Glad to hear both you and the wallet are mending though, and it does sound like "she who must be obeyed" is at least still speaking to you......

Paul,

No, its not too personal. I had a mechanical brake failure at a track day. The "wrist pin" on my brake pedal backed out (a one in a million+ happening). I totaled the car, broke 4 ribs, cracked my pelvis (wallet), and scared the hell out of my wife. She is a wonderful girl, and will be reluctantly supportive of my going back. She needed a little time to get there.

Lesson: Safety wire everything brake related. I would never have thought the circlip that holds the pin in place would move.

A friend just sent me this Los Angeles CL add for an Elan. Have a spare 55k for a S3?

I am astounded at the prices on these. I had a good condition '72 Elan +2 that I sold in 1988 for $7500, which was market value at the time. Just wow.
