MichaelD
I would like to get an idea of what the cost should be and what else might be involved in having my Seven with clams repainted. I guess I would take off the roll cage, front and rear fenders, tail lights and the seats just to be safe. How do you disconnect the clams from the stays? Anything else? Thanks for the feedback. yellowss7
Michael, you and I are probably the only two old school guys that have clams. :seeya: Unscrew the side marker lamp on the clam, and lif off. The bolt that holds the light one goes thru the wing stay. There is a small lock nut underneath the wing stay. Once that is off, you can unbolt the clams by removing all the bolts along the bottom of the clam.
coffee break
Old school guy with clams, I resemble that remark.
sagamore
It may be a good idea to remove the windshield, its supports, and the wipers.
lotusman1951
Michael, I would give some thought to wrapping instead of painting-thats where I am going to do with the Kurtis. as I recall you have stress cracks in your fiberglass which will just reappear with paint-the wrap choices range from carbon fiber to chrome and everything in between-and its something that you should be able to do yourself-I have had 2 7s painted a MACCO with the winter sale on now for $300-I would avoid the Silver Spring shop from a bad experience with a Miata I had done a few years back. MichaelD
Thanks for both comments. Anyone have cost estimates for a wrap?
BlueMax
Just finished painting my Caterham. My answer would be would be, to what degree of paint job your seeking as well the skills of painter and the quality of paints will determined the cost of a paint job. Blokko
Someone on BC, Grubbster I think, posted about a DIY wrap and I'm pretty sure that his conclusion was that it wasn't worth the hassle - pay someone to do it.
coffee break
FWIW On Motorweek/PBS there was a report on peelable auto finish. I'm sure there are some $$ involved. http://www.motorweek.org/features/over_the_edge/peelable-paint
pksurveyor
I agreed with BlueMax. The cost depends on the degree of paint and finish you desired. Another consideration is the amount of labor involved to take apart the car for painting and re-assemble the car afterward. My R300 was raw aluminum with carbon fiber wings. The cost of clear coat the wings was part of the paint job. The dollars added up pretty quick.
xcarguy
. . . Anything else? Thanks for the feedback. Michael, Why do you want to paint that wonderful car? No more patina, rock chips, character . . . all gone. Your car is remarkable 'AS IS". Do nothing. :ack:
