Jaeggernaut
Hi everyone. Looking to scratch a 20 year itch when I first saw a lotus 7 in lotus green livery in my then condo parking garage. I finally have the means to do it but coming from Canada it is a bit harder than I hoped. Ideally I could've ordered the kit straight from Caterham. Was thinking I could build it with my young son for 2 reasons: it's be fun to create that kind of accomplishment with him. And give me a reason to convince my wife to spend on the 620R. Alas, looks like the easiest way to import a caterham into Canada is to find one that's 15 years old or older. Which brings me to my 2 noon questions: 1) is there a way to get notified when any new post is made in the 'for sale' channel? So I don't have to constantly check, OCD style? 2) what's the type/naming difference between the Caterhams that have the swooping extended front fenders and the ones with the tighter short fenders that go closely around the wheels? (My preference is the latter)? Bonus) what other repositories should I be monitoring besides here and bring-a-trailer? Thanks guys. I'll be having fun lurking
panamericano
Jaeggernaut, good luck with your search. It took me a year, and I got my car from an ad on this site. I would add, don't overlook other established brands, Birkin, Westfield, WCM... You have come to the right place. Those more knowledgeable will doubtless chime in shortly. Croc does a great job posting almost every one for sale. This saves the laziest of us a lot of time! Have fun. Mark

NORMALLY Croc updates on Saturday or Sunday. But, reading this site everyday is great "exercise" for those of us that can't drive our "7s" every day. 2) what's the type/naming difference between the Caterhams that have the swooping extended front fenders and the ones with the tighter short fenders that go closely around the wheels? (My preference is the latter)? You are stating a preference for "Cycle" fenders vs the "Clamshell" fenders. If you have the wider "SV" front suspension then the clamshells aren't an effective option as they don't normally stick out far enough to cover the tires--both a legal and a practical consideration--in the "widetrack" SV models. Bonus) what other repositories should I be monitoring besides here and bring-a-trailer? Hemmings has a great list of all cars, usually 90 plus Lotus'es (LOTI?) and the California Lotus CLub has listings. BUT Croc does an amazing job of keeping up with all of those I'm pretty sure--haven't shopped really for over 11 years..... Thanks guys. I'll be having fun lurking Hope this helps..... Kitcat
I'd add that sometimes there are se7ens listed for sale in the Marketplace sections of Sportscar Magazine (the SCCA publication) as well as Grassroots Motorsports magazine, that don't get picked up by Croc's very thorough system. Also check EBay motors, under Lotus. Used Caterhams, Westfields, Stalkers etc., often get listed there.
Croc
For the record I will usually update the Ebay/etc thread in the for sale forum each Sunday morning. Sometimes infrequently it will be a saturday update if I am travelling Sunday. There are about 4-6 weekends a year when I do get to update because I am doing another 40,000 mile trip round the world. The areas I have searchbot do his deed are: Ebay Craigslist Hemmings Classiccars.com VRG Wirewheel Bringatrailer racecars.com The search terms are Caterham, Westfield, Stalker, Ultralite, Locost, Lotus 7, Lotus Seven, and Birkin There are 3 sellers I exclude for reasons that they have a reputation that i do not want to associate with. I also exclude dealers on the basis that they are quite capable of doing their own marketing - try the manufacturer directly - Caterham USA, Birkin USA or Manik (Westfield) or Brunton (Stalker) Individual sellers who list their own ad on the forum will only appear in my list if they advertize on one of the listed sites. Its not perfect and does miss some ads but there is a pretty good range each week. Now if you want a 620R then I have only seen one of those come up for sale ever in the US and Matt bought it. I think you have to order that through a dealer as used ones are going to be few and far between. There is a Canadian equivalent to Craigslist called Kikiji or something like that. You could run your own searches on that site. Edited June 22, 2018 by Croc
Anaximander
Croc, If you had not been on the ball as well as you are, I would have missed Mike G's Superlight that is resting in air conditioned comfort in my storage facility waiting to get some road time after I transfer the title. Klasik-69
When I listed the car on Craigslist, I really didn't think it would generate much. I think of CL as a place to list lower priced items, like a used washing machine or similar. About 3 weeks ago, I listed my big enclosed trailer on CL. Within a few hours of the ad coming out, I had several inquiries. One of those ended up buying the trailer two days later. I kept getting inquiries for about a week even though I removed the ad once I sold it. The last Thursday I decided to just "test" the waters to see if there was any interest. I set up the ad and really didn't think it would get much. Almost immediately I received about 4 inquiries. One in particular was the very nice gentleman from Mass. who was going to fly down to see it on Saturday. However, once he found out it was near impossible to get it registered and licensed in Mass, he backed out. I kept getting inquiries until several days later Bob seemed to really want the car, and he bought it. It's hard to figure out CL. It's free and I used to think it attracted some strange elements. However, I can tell you the people who I spoke with were first class and quite trustworthy. I also bought my motorcycle last week from a seller on CL. So maybe I had the wrong impression of buying and selling on CL. It's hard to complain about the cost to advertise on it...............FREE. DavidL
I bought my Caterham in 2008 based on a Seattle Craigslist ad which, I think, was listed here. I would not have spotted it since I'm near San Francisco. so good things can come from CL! -David
xcarguy
While it is a dealer, I like dropping in on wirewheel.com every now and then. Right now, they have a couple of Cats for sale.
lucky dawg
Keep in mind that the 620R is rhd only. Will that make any difference for you in getting it licensed? Also might want to check with http://www.super7cars.com in B.C.
Anaximander
Shane, The folks Hayes and his twin sons Hamilton and Hunter are very nice people in person. I drove my Stalker the 1.5 miles to their facility to meet them and Hayes sons gave me the nickel tour. Very impressive collection of cars for sale. Today I stopped by to advise that I had bought a Caterham and they wouldn't have to consider throwing me off the premises for not owning a correct Brit mobile. Turns out that both of Hayes sons are track driving instructors and I plan to request them when I do my first HPDE over at Sebring which is less than two hours from the house. Jaeggernaut
Thanks everyone. Great info. Not only is a 620r rare, there would not be one 15 years old that i could import. There is a (non?) official caterham vendor in vancouver but because of canadian import regulations they are kind of frankensteins... not to say they aren’t good. There’s many good reviews,.. but the purist in me really would love to get a ‘caterham’.

I know their Hayabusa is their signature car but could you buy a regular Duratec kit through them and build yourself? so, no way to get notified (email?) whenever there’s a new post in ‘for sale’ forum? Not that I have ever found. You can get automatic notification emails for private messages, administrators or visitors to your profile but seemingly not specific threads (or countries within that thread). If you want a seriously want a Caterham then you will want to put the effort in to know them before you buy. They are not your regular car and the more you know will help your ownership experience. BTW - did you find Terry's Caterham CSR200 in AB for sale yet? Edited June 24, 2018 by Croc
breezy7
so, no way to get notified (email?) whenever there’s a new post in ‘for sale’ forum? At the top of the page click on "Thread Tools” and then “Subscribe to this Thread” which will take you to a page that allows you to choose how you want to be notified. It will say "Notifications" and you can pick how often to be notified. Edited June 24, 2018 by breezy7

That to is useful. @Croc thanks for all the help. Appreciate it.
