Do you get any challenges in your seven?

After I parted company with Dermot on Sunday, some retard in a Black WRX (not even STi) decided to show me how fast his ride is from the traffic light.

While I enjoy the occasional spirited drives, racing on the street is just stupid. Even average sports cars today build speed fast enough to get you in trouble quick.

Anyway, I half throttled it up to the speed limit while his turbos were wiiiiiiiiiishing next to my ear and he went on his way. I'm probably posted in the Kills section of some Subaru forum by now :D

This is the 2nd time I've had something like this come up. The other was a Mustang in traffic on I-495

Honestly, I expected to get more of this with the vette than the seven.

I pulled up beside a 1929 Model A Ford.

He said, "Nice Car!"

I said, "Nice Car back to you!"

He said, "You might as well go first because you are probably much faster than I am!"

My wife grinned and waved as we pulled ahead and turned out of the intersection ahead of the bigger classic car.

I purposely go MUCH slower. To the point of sitting at the light while he takes off. You get more respect by not racing them at all. Harder also to say "Why, no, officer! It must have been some other 7 you saw..."

My favourite answer to the question "How fast does it go?"

"Depends who's around."

I left the light nice and easy... THEN he took off to prove something. There was no head nod or anything. Well, maybe there was, but I wasn't looking.

So far I have not had a challenge. Nearily everyone has been very respectful around me. I'm glad because with 1300cc and 58 screaming HP I don't think I'm much of a threat, Russ

I just ignore them. Double ignore if it is a kid in a Camaro or Mustang.

Sometimes they realy do piss me off though and It is very hard to keep control. Worst was about a month ago when a WANKER in a Porche 996 passed me on the right, on an on-ramp. I saw him make his move in the mirror and was extremely pissed. (visions of being in my old truck and "accidentally letting him hit me came to mind) It was all I could do to act my usual and just wave as he went by. :blueangel: . . . Of course I was waving with 4 less fingers than normal. :reddevil:

I actually don't mind going through the gears hard from a stoplight in front of, behind, or next to another car. It's happened once in the Caterham, when I pulled up behind an adult driven S2000 at a light and he lit it up when the light turned green. So I stayed with him and eventually pulled over and alongside. We were at this point not much over the posted and he gave me the nod and we slowed things down. We were well ahead of other traffic by then, with a straight, clear road ahead of us. I don't think this sort of "racing" is all that dangerous or even stupid.

That said, tailgating and weaving in and out of traffic/lpassing on double yellows at even legal speeds is stupid and very dangerous.

Here's how I feel about "street racing": True outlaw street racing for money or cars/car parts is crazy and and I think increasingly rare. I will say that I bet not that many people are endangered by this behavior beyond the participants and spectators. What some people might consider "racing", the tailgating and weaving and passing is really really dangerous, especially to the people who are just minding their business trying to get to work or wherever.

I get lots of "challenges" in my Se7en, and I generally don't respond to them. I try to drive carefully in the 3 miles between my house and the Interstate, simply because I do it so often, and there are so many cops around the area. I don't run a front plate, and I don't want to arouse their attention. So far I have been keeping under the radar.

If some one asks me how fast it is, I generally respond with " Faster than yours" this generally results in complete surprise on their part, followed by their massive burnout. If there is a cop around it can be very entertaining. :D :d

Well, I'm kind of with Al on this one.

I am very selective on where and when and only about 3 to 5 seconds worth.

In a car that will do 0-60 in just under 3 seconds thats about all you need.

If some young or old whipper snapper comes along and the conditions are right,

I get a total thrill out of educating them about the HP to LBS ratio.

It is usually followed by them wanting you to pull over so they can get a closer look.

They are totally amazed at the car. I have had them follow me for miles taking pictures

and giving thumbs up. Even motorcycles can't believe that when they are pulling wheelies

in every gear and you are still pulling away from them, it just floors them.

On ramps are great place to do your 0 - 80 blast if the highway is clear, even better if it is a loop.

I did get pulled over by the Georgia Hwy patrol once for this, He was so intrigued by the

car that he didn't even write me a warning, of course I was 20 minutes late arriving at my destination.

It is by far the funnest car I have ever driven.

Raleigh, NC does not exactly have a lot of interesting or high hp cars. Then again, I pretty much avoid 4+ lane roads and try to stay on back roads. Mostly, people (male & female) want a ride to which I am always willing to oblige.

If I was challenged, I would probably pass. After too many speeding tickets in the P-car, I lost my umbrella policy. Next March I get it back if I get no violations.

  • 2 weeks later...

Guys this has really surprised me. I have yet to be challenged by anyone at a stop light. I thought for sure some ricer in a done up Honda Civic or other Japanese car would have challenged me to a race but not as of yet.

I think it might have something to do with the Top Gear video which really shows the performance of the Atom. They probably know that they will get smoked so why bother. I have yet to see a street legal Honda civic that can get to 60mph in under 3 seconds. And if some nut case decides to challenge me I will leave the line just like I'm driving my fathers Buick....nice and slow.

Speaking of drag racing, here is the link for my first time at any drag strip. It was fun, but after going to a circuit track I don't think I will be hitting a drag strip any time soon.

I think with the sevens it's a little different because there are so many makes and models with varrying amounts of HP.

cheers

Maverick,

Great time for a first time at the strip. Damn few people get under 12 seconds on the first time out, many never make it at all.

Congratulations.

Like you, I much prefer road courses.

Thanks scannon. I guess it was beginners luck. I actually went past the staging lights on my first run and had to back up. Live and learn.

Cheers™
