I have an early Raceco back from the days when they offered a smaller, 6.25" diameter for people not as concerned with noise reduction.  It's a great silencer.  I'm curious if you anticipate fitment issues with the center inlet?  I thought Raceco recommended the offset inlet when replacing a Caterham silencer due to width limitations with the stock exhaust?  Or is your exhaust manifold positioned a little farther away from the side skin than a factory setup?

Good catch! Raceco mentioned, that the offset inlet is a little worse from a noise reduction perspective, as the packing is then more uneven. I also have my silencer aligned straight with the exhaust and not like Caterham has, where the silencer is aligned with the driver/passenger side and the pipe from the collector has a curve. So this should make the center inlet actually easier.

I plan on making a new header anyway at some point, but I think I'll fit this silencer in the meantime to my existing header as well. Let's see how it will fit...

And I received also my new trailer for the seven. Full alu construction, so no rust worries on this one and it is also very light at 690kg with a 2700kg total weight limit.

I finished today the electric winch installation with a wireless remote connected to an AGM battery and next up are some wheel straps.

The first job for the trailer was to pick up a new track car. We will dissassemble, check, clean and paint this Formula Renault during the winter.

Do you plan to race your new track car next year?

Not yet - we have never driven anything with aero, so I think next summer we will just have fun visiting tracks and learning the car. I don’t even fit into the cockpit as is, so we have now a great reason to do a paddle shift conversion to get rid of the gear level and thus have more space for my a*s… The driving position is really extreme, it is impossible to imagine without experiencing it yourself.

Thanks to the experience with setting up the 7 with MME, we have at least some ideas how to to it now.

First issues already found, a new front upright is on the agenda:

  • 4 weeks later...

It has been vert busy on many fronts, but I finally got the exhaust started. This time no v-clamp between the silencer and header, as I never detached the previous one and that clamp is heavy!

Pyrotech also informed me, that the bladder tank is done. I need to figure out shipment next for that.

And while at it (and since I forgot to buy a lambda weld bung) I welded together a scratch build silencer and some header modifications for a fellow 7 owner.

Lovely work. Did you also fab the silencer or just bring the bits together? I guess straight through perforated tube and some packing?

I guess the upright was not expensive enough to consider repair. Looks like it was too tight on a shim that should ideally be longer to completely fill the gap.

The silencer was pre-assembled from the owner with Mig tacks - yes, just a straight tube.

That is what we thought ref the upright, but when we got our replacement part from France, it turned out to be a repaired one. A new one is 1000 Eur, so I’ll repair ours now…and a  good guess ref the shim, we were really wondering what might have happened.

Some progress today as well. I have a Jazzy cup size 10 for stainless, but I think I’ll try larger ones next, as I still get some color to the weld. The rear bracket is next in line, but unfortunately it is already too late to use the angle grinder outside.

And one of those moments… I was welding the rear bracket for the exhaust, all good…

… but when I flipped it over I forgot to connect the grounding cable and I then burned a small hole thru the titanium at arc start as a result...

A friend realised, that exactly there needs to be a ”No step” sign anyway… ok, I can live with that 😄. I will make one out of alu and rivet it in place.

After I recovered I welded the broken Formula upright as well. The cast aluminium was really good quality and to my surprise there were no pinholes! We will machine it flat next.

Nice job. Looks like you are probably equipped to mill your own shims from bar stock instead of universals. Just shim up one side on the table and mill flat, then drill while still on the table. Looks like the upright should have some vertical slotting also to clear whatever angle the shanks end up at as a result of shimming so they don't bind with self-leveling washers for an even clamp load.

Something like this:

Yeah, I think we can mill it flat without having to touch the area that was unharmed, also drilling either on the mill or just from the other side with the hole as a pilot should do. Thanks for the leveling washer tip!

Please let me know if you plan on making the center caps for the SLR wheels and how much you'd commission another set for...

I've had 1 set 3d printed so far and not too happy with them. Looking to find another source to give it another try next.

Ha, I did notice that he was missing the center caps, but I kept quiet so that I wouldn’t end up having to make them… 😀

Are the SLR caps hard to source? On my car the caps were of different size front and rear, so making them was the only way to have a matching set.

SLR caps are unobtanium. There is a center piece thats like 8inches wide and flat that has the retaining screw hole and then another cap pops into the center of that center cap, and that becomes the elevated part with the 7 on it.

I believe I got the last set of the center small "7" caps from CC parts but the wider parts were unavailable for sometime from CC or the original supplier. The "7" center caps aren't ... great. They are secured by plastic tabs that tend to break and I already broke one of them trying to get it into the poorly made 3d printed bigger flat cap.

Mine are the same front and back.

Having a friend trying to make them all as one piece right now

Here is painted. It's not the worst but 3d printing leaves a lot to be desired pre paint. Needs lots of fill and work

Also here is the other commissioned center ring I have with the OEM center plug
