420S build in Ohio

Got my seven yesterday, so far just started digging through boxes and trying to figure out what I'm missing/need...so far the only obvious thing is a battery.

I'll keep updating here as I go, but just excited to finally get this going!!

Observations so far, the pick list is annoying.  I appreciate having it and having things somewhat grouped - but there needs to be a "already mounted" check or something.  I am not tearing down the motor to make sure each individual screw is there...

Missing parts:

Battery (but actually wasn't on the pick list?)

A few random fixing packs

A different part number on the exhaust - pick list says 380X0006A, I received 360X0006A, and the parts site looks like they are pretty different....anyone know which is correct?

And a cracked fuel gauge :(

And I have an extra roll bar - I ordered the track day bar, but received both the normal and track day.  Hopefully one of Greg's other kits isn't missing it.

Getting started on front suspension.

360X0006A is 6" in diameter and intended for the 1.6L Sigma.  You should have the 7" silencer.  I'd also verify the tube is the same diameter as the catalytic converter.  It wouldn't surprise me if the Sigma is 2.25" tube vs. 2.5" for the Duratec.

The biggest duplicate part I received was a dry sump tank dipstick.  A second roll bar is in a different league.

Oh that is special - even by Caterham standards.  :classic_laugh:

yeah, its the wrong part.  6" silencer, with a 2.25 tube.  cat has the 2.5"

Front end is almost done, haven't had much time to work this week.

Got the wingstays, uprights, sway bar and headlights on today, but the damn heat gun disformed the indicator pod....and I didnt notice until I was done putting it together. I'm not sure if I care enough to replace it... but I probably will. Of course the sway bar was a pain in the ass, and is in the way if I decide to pull it back off.

Also does anyone know if the US gives a crap about the IVA trim stuff? I don't really want to put it on.  I did it on the pods and it's so ugly.

And like I mentioned the other day, I'm missing the fixing pack C, so I don't have the screws to attach the indicator to the pod, or the bolt/washer/spacer for the horns..

My car didn’t have any Iva trim on any of the body panel openings. I think I have them on indicator pods. Don’t recall the ny dmv caring about any of that but defer to anyone who might have had any issues with it.

Cool, I'll leave it off and hope that Ohio doesn't care.  From what I've heard they should only care about headlights/bumpers/etc

New York needed photos of bumpers , padded dash and sun visors. Don’t get me started with the light sae numbers. You can pm me when you get to that stage for tips (if Ohio is anything like ny)

Found another missing part - 30H003A 5/8 heater hose - again doesn't seem to be on the pick list, so I'm guessing that's the part number...

Another super stupid question....why is there a gap at the bottom of the bellhousing/motor?  I'm guessing I have the wrong bellhousing?

Nope, you should have a black part called the dry sump guard that fills that gap.  It's one of that parts that can be a little fiddly to fit or you luck out and the bolts align perfectly.  Caterham uses the same bellhousing for wet sump and dry sump cars, but because the dry sump pan is so much shallower, you end of with the step and resulting gap.

Sorry since I wimped out and had Greg have someone put my engine in I’m not much help. But this is my 420r. Seems like the black piece which I thought was just a guard might be a more integral piece.

Saw your car at Greg's last week, looked amazing.  Some items I can help with since Greg took over from me:

  1. We have the factory supplied "Banner" battery deleted as we have had a poor lifespan history with them. Greg will ship a replacement battery tray assembly (he likely forgot to include the tray and battery) as we use an AGM battery with more cranking power that is readily available from Interstate Battery. I will make sure he gets you handled this week.
  2. Yes, the "IVA Trim" is not required in the US. The rubber edging for the front wings is a pain to install and they look better without it.
  3. Let Greg know any shortages with the assembly manual page number and part number. Usually there is a box marked "shortages" that contains items missing on the first packing, but occasionally there are missing pieces. Believe me, the current system works MUCH better than the previous system so greatly reduced items shortages.
  4. Attached is a letter I used that outlines some shortcuts, hacks and other build helps. I see you have already embraced the "pool noodle" concept. A really cheap way to protect the car.

Greg can help with build details and if he doesn't know, Henry his father will as he did numerous Seven builds for our customers as a third-party installer.

And the "bumpers" are my design do meet New York requirements. :classic_biggrin:
