dang....waaaaay more than I'm willing to pay.....FWIW that number is for Golden Gate Sevens at Infineon raceway AKA Sears point...

I have nothing of substance to add here. Just wanted to jump in and say the car in haiku88's avatar looks more complete than mine at the moment :leaving:

I bet that changes though, that is as far as my Locost ever got, a rolling chassis. Tried to sell it but no takers, eventually gave the frame away to a guy on the Yahoo Locost NA list, but no regrets, learned a lot building it and the frame, making MG B and Midget parts fit, etc...:) ...

Hi haiku88,

Sorry for hijacking this post folks but haiku88 due you have any photos of your build before you gave away as I built mine from an MGB and would like to see how someone else made it work. If so could you PM me with a link to them.

I have recently ordered a 2008 Caterham SV with the same engine to be delivered in early summer. By the time the car is built and delivered by the dealer, the cost is about $ 70,000. The currency exchange rate and raising shipping charge (i.e. price of fuel) have a big effect on the price increase.

You should of orderd a BAM SR27 for under 50K, and had the same, if not more performance out of it.

I appreciate your enthusiasm for your product, but a statement like that by a manufacturer or their agent is not in keeping with the spirit of this forum. I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Deman makes a good point, IMHO. What is amazing to me is how expensive many of these vehicles are. Especially when you realize how basic and stripped down they are. If you figured the cost, per pound, of a new run-of-the mill Caterham, it's in Ferrari territory.

Yes, that may be true and a matter of discussion for neutral forum members. But I am with John that a commercial seller (even a small one) should not post something that smells like advertising.

That said, I kind of agree with the post in question :jester:

To build that car today, you gotta figure what, say $55-$60K+???? More if you put a Cosworth Duratec in it. I just looked on Ministers web site, it would be over $20K just to replace my K series.

Tom

Hence my decision to build from scratch. I don't believe I will have over 10k in building 2 cars with much more hp.

The prices are certainly getting ridiculous, but I think a big part of that is down to the dollar and transport costs. When I bought my first Westfield back in ‘01, the Pound was worth less than $1.50 (actually $1.44 according to some research I just performed) and premium fuel at my local Chevron was under $1.30. Now the Pound is up to $2 and that same Chevron is charging $3.65 for a gallon of the good stuff.

A little niche manufacturer like Caterham, or Westfield can’t afford to suck up the currency hits on their profit margins while waiting for the dollar to recover. If a major overseas manufacturer kept their US prices aligned to the currency fluctuations, then they would probably see a big decrease in unit sales – and hence share – and that could have implications that extend well past the dollar’s return to its former levels. It would also have a big impact on their global unit volumes since the US represents 25-50% of sales for many manufacturers. Somehow I think if US sales for Caterham were cut in half, it wouldn’t have too much of an effect on their bottom line.

The good news for Se7en enthusiasts is that we still have lots of choices. In addition to a Locost (I wish I had the skill), there is the Stalker and WCM, both of which aren’t affected by the dollar issue, Westfield now has the Miata donor version which is a lot cheaper than a traditional SEiW build like mine, a lower spec Caterham still isn’t that outrageous, and of course…the Deman ;) Another great way to get into the hobby is a used car. Well, unless it is priced at nearly $50k ;)

Its not a advertisment statement, Im just saying that for someone to drop that kind of money on a car that has nothing to it is somewhat insane. I could of said that you can pick up an Ultrlite for alot less, or a Westfeild. Sorry for all of you that took it the wrong way.

I thought you were in the business of selling these 'Nothing to it" cars? How many have you sold with an attitude like that??? :cuss:

Caterham and Ariel just came out with $200K+++ cars. Now that's insane, but some will line up to buy them.

Like I said I'm more than happy with my choice. Good luck with your business. :flag:
