How to pick up a new S2K & break it

Well I met Brian (nice guy) at Knotts and we sealed the deal. Trailered the car home and had to take it for a spin (more on the spin in a minute).

Drove for about half an hour, giving a couple rides, getting used to the car. So I came up to an intersection out here in the rural area that goes on to a very wide, empty, new street... plenty of room to screw up safely. And I did.... too much gas fish tail and end up back wards, laughing the whole time. Didn't kill the engine but halfway thru turning back around it dies (about 30 seconds after spinout). Turns over but won't start. Couldn't find any lose connections. Luckily I still have my friends trailer and am only about half a mile away.

So, it's in my garage and I'm asking you guys for some advice on what to check. It has fuel, all electrics work... fuel pump is running (plenty of gas in tank).

I'll take some pics tomorrow.

Check the basics, air, fuel, spark. If you have points and a mechanical distributer check the points for the correct gap as I once had a Porsche that was running great and when I stopped at a stop sign so did the engine and it would crank and had fuel and air and spark but would not run due to a second set of points that controled the fuel injection fireing even though I had sparks at the plug wires. Drove me nuts until a guy stopped and showed me were to check and helped me regap those triger points and told me to get a new set as the were worn and needed replacing.

By the way do your cheeks hert from the smile on your face from that first ride in your 7.

HAve fun.

Got to admit it was fun while it lasted. I'm so happy about getting the car I'm not that upset about this problem (long as it doesn't turn out to be major engine issue).

It's a 2005 Honda S2000; all fuel injection/computer etc.. I saw what looks like the plug you hook up for diagnosis and was wondering if it's the same as Ford, Chevy etc... that I could go to Kragen's, where you can check one out and read a code error or something. Don't know what I'd do from there but it would be a start.

May be just a loose connection, hidden somewhere. I suppose you got the S2K engine? If you just can't find it maybe a Honda shop can help....I guess taking it back to the shop that sold it is not an option :jester:

Like Martin said, check the basics... see if you have spark - see if injectors are firing. Check all fuses. Measure +12 at the injectors, etc... Do you hear the fuel pump? Does it sound normal when it's just cranking, like it has compression (god, I hope so). More than likely you found your first wiring problem.

Most important of all - make sure it has gas :leaving:

Thanks guys,

I can hear the fuel pump kick in when I turn on the battery switch. I can actually see it's wiring connections and it looks to be good.

The car turns over normally - no weird noises from the engine etc..

I can replace parts but I'm no good at figuring this stuff out (thats why I had it built). I wouldn't know which wires to check (lot of stuff on these computerized cars).

Might have to take to garage.

I'm kind of glad it happened now and not at an autocross across town or somewhere out in the twisties.

I'll give it a good once over again for loose connections etc.. before taking other action.

Was just hoping someone else had this experience before. Thanks again.

Probably should of put this in the "Tech" section. Sorry

Congrats on the car Mondo! :)

It doesn't have a fuel pump inertia switch that could be reset, does it? Maybe you tripped it when you spun out.

Congratulations on your new car. I would call Brian and ask him what the problem is. I had talked to him a few times and got to meet him last fall @ Gateway. He is a real class guy that supports his product. Everyone at the party that had dealings with Brian was very happy with him, he has a strong following. Likely he could give you the answer. There is also an owner’s site @ http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ultralite_USA/ . Be careful and enjoy.

I'm not too worried, pretty sure it's something simple (like an inertia switch... electrical).

Left Brian an email as he's driving back home. I'm sure he'll be helpful.

Thanks again

FIXED!

Fuel hose came off the fuel pump inside the tank (thanks Loren). Clamped on tight now:thumbs:.

Might wait a little longer before testing it with another spin;)

That is wierd, The same thing happened to me on a test drive in Texas from Brian's shop, as I was buying a car. It turned out to be the 12V to the coils coming loose from it's connector on the breaker. Brian came out and fixed it on the spot. I was all smiles anyway, and wrote him a down payment check on the spot when we got back to his shop.

Basic rule of Ultrallites. Never mash the trottle in 1, 2 or maybe even 3 gear, without the car being in a straight line.
