Still looking for a cheap side view mirror fix

Maybe using original holes?motor bike mirrors, and the chance of still keeping the aero screens flippable?

I know this has been brought up a few times before but just wondered of and cheap and clean solutions, I do not like the big panoramic strip across the top of the window, and Sevens and Elans offers a kit for $300, bit too much for me I am afraid.Can anyone recco a partic mirror and how to fit it, I really hate to drive wiithout side views.BTW, whats the feelings on flat glass versus convex (bigger than they appear I know)in the UK it was always flat glass.

I was also thinkink that maybe a small alum adaptor plate could be made simply that lines up with the original holes so no new drilling is required?

DB, when you say "perspex", do you mean you have brooklands screens? If so, I don't know how people mount side mirrors...hopefully someone who runs that config will chime in.

 

Although, if you did, I can't imagine how the top you wrestled with would snap to anything at the leading edge?

Mount the bike mirrors to the Persplex defectors. I made some little alloy brackets that bolt under the hinge screws.

Of course, this solution won't work when you have the side screens on.

I still have the SPA GT mirrors available that I PM'd you about a while back. Here are a couple of pictures.

I have their little brothers (the formula mirrors) installed on my windscreen stanchion. At the moment, I have them secured by justrunning the middle windscreen bolt through one of the holes on the mirror mounting flange. Believe it or not, this is actually reasonably stable, particularly if you orient the mirror flange so that it's top edge supports itself against the upper side screen hinge. In the future I plan to make a little adapter bracket to lower the mirrors a little.

 

Also, the thing with SPA mirrors is that they are set up so that are adjustable only by loosening and tightening a set screw underneath the flange base. However, I managed to assemble mine with a collection of Belleville washers and delrin shims (a total of about $5 of parts from McMaster-Carr) that allows them to be held by friction and adjusted by hand. Works surprisingly well.

I also have the SPA GT mirrors and have been very happy with them. What I did to mount them to my Birkin was remove the original mirror mount from the stanchion which leaves a pretty good sized hole (1/2" - 3/4"?) in the stanchion. Here's a picture that I borrowed showing the original Birkin mirror mount:

I then removed the lower of the (3) stanchion to windshield countersunk screws, installed a longer countersunk screw through the upper mirror mount of the SPA mirror, through the stanchion, and into the windshield frame. I then drilled through the lower mirror mount hole, through the stanchion and secured it with a second countersunk screw and nut. The set screw that locks the mirror arm is now accessible through the large hole that remains when the original Birkin mirror mount is removed. Here's a couple crappy pics of my mirror set-up:

I still have to install the sidescreen pivots, but they fit without a problem.

So, | is the Delrin spacer (McMaster P/N 95647A12) and | and | are the Belleville washers (McMaseter P/N 9713K17).

I used a similar stack up on top of the mirror housing (under the screw/washer that secures it to the top of the stalk).

 

Snug the locking screw up (but not cinched absolutely tight) and you should be good to go. I've run them up to ~90mph and they haven't moved, but remain easily adjustable by hand.

 

I was slightly optimistic with my $5.00 estimate. For 2 mirrors, the parts value is more like ~$8.00, although min. order quantities (12 Belleville washers, 50 Delrin spacers) mean it's really ~$20.00. I have a bunch of the Delrin spacers left so could mail those out to people who are interested.

OK. Well my ascii art attempt didn't work at all. Looks like there's some kind of logic in the posting software that automatically deletes multiple spaces. I'll have to try to do a proper drawing / photo tomorrow.

I've had a mail server melt down, but I recall seeing a PM from you about the motorbike mirrors. Sorry I didn't get back to you.

 

I picked up the "carbon effect" mirrors on Ebay for around 20 clams. This was back in 2004 so the vendors have changed. I found them in "motorcycle accessories". You'll find a couple of different styles available from different vendors. I imagine they're all manufactured in China. The style I bought are called "F1". The mirrors had a 6mm stud sticking out of the socket joint. I may have cut some of it off to neaten things up a bit.

 

I'm a tad busy at work putting a product design to bed, so I don't have time to make you a pair of brackets. I can sketch up a drawing of the brackets so you could cut them out yourself. They're cut from a strip of 1/8 X 1-1/4" thick alloy strip from Home Base. It's just three drilled holes and a 45 degree bend.
