Run & Gun 2008 report

Recommended Posts

Well a couple days have gone by at Run N Gun. Yesterday was a test and tune day, and today was road corse and Autocross. Lots of Cobras and GT40's, Monngooses, Dragons etc. You know, the typical twin turbo 1000hp LS7 types. The reason for these high hp cars is to compete with another group of impressive cars, the SEVENS.

There were 12 sevens in attendance. 4 WCM Ultralites, and 8 Stalkers.

I was one of the Ultralites, but was observing, not competing ( My wall is so full of trophies, I don't have any more room) :D

Here is the Ultralight S2K-R brought by Chris Porter, which he recently acquired. This was Chris's first Run N Gun, and he was getting his car sorted out, and it looked good on the track.

The heavy hitters included Chuck Spera's Ultralite XR-7. Chuck is the Ohio region SCCA DMOD champ, and you can see he means business with this set of wheels. I believe he ran first place overall in the Autocross.

and here is Kevin Boulton's Ultralite S2K which took 3 place overall in the One Lap of America. It's a supercharged honda s2000 running on E-85 ethanol. It also has more gadgets than you can imagine, with TV cameras, satellite nav system, cruise control etc., all needed for rapid transits between stages of the One Lap. That's the camera on the pole on the back of the car. It's FAST

Cliff Flath was also observing, here is his Stalker

then there were the four Stalkers from Iowa, part of the Jim Woodsmall Sugargrovecars.com group

Here is Ron Jarboe's Super Stalker #759

and here is Mike Knorr's black SuperStalker

http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/423802851_DSC_6083 (Medium).JPG

and Dick Hoover's blue SuperStalker( driven by Jared Timmerman) with , of all things, an automatic transmission. Dick is an old dragster guy and knows how to make those autos really work for him.

and Jim Woodsmall's #592 Super Stalker. He was here last year, showing off his cool design sidepods.

Hotshoe John Meyers showed up with his recently re-engined Stalker. This time it's a V8, a brand new GM LS3 crate motor. He was burning up the track with this beast. Note the central wing location.

Another fast Stalker was Marty Caroll's #77. This one is naturally aspirated, but he still ran in the #1 fast group

Now Loren Edwards ( West Texas S2k) didn't get his new S2K done in time, and since he had paid up, and showed up, they let him run a Corvette!! This was the rental Corvette that Kevin & Michelle Boulton used to win the Fireball Rally last week !! Loren was pushing Cobras out of his way with the Vette,

There were some truly wierd cars there, check out this Deronda. A LS7 powered thing. It's reminiscent of a seven, but its a mid engined car with cycle fenders. It was their first time at a track, and the car performed well, but that wing flapped from side to side at speed.

Lots of exotic machinery at the track today, I believe this is an RCR car, but I'm not positive.

Thanks for the great update. I really miss not being there. It is a fun event for sure and your Se7ens Party that you and Sue put on is the BEST!!!

How is the overall car count in comparison to years past?

Hey Jerry,

Jack: We missed you this year. but with the Snyders and Brinkerhoffs, the Indianapolis area was well represented. Paul is bringing his Ultralite to the track today.

I would say there were about the same number of cars competing, but there were probably 20 or 25 more "display" cars in manufacturers row. Several big double deck trailers full of Mongooses and Cobras, a guy with 7 or 8 GM crate engines on display, several parts vendors. Overall , a lot more stuff to see.

More road racing all day today, and tomorrow is the drags.

Today, Friday at Run N Gun, was road course day. All of the sevens were doing well. I don't have the times but they will be published on the run n Gun website eventually. Tonight is the awards banquet, and tomorrow is the drags and Top Gun awards.

Paul Snyder drove in in his beautiful Red and silver Ultralite with a wood dash and full leather interior. Here it is.

He and I parked together to compare cars

As I left in the middle of the afternoon session, Kevin Boulton, Chuck Spera (Ultralites)and Marty Carroll (NA Stalker) were all in the very top of the 4-6 cyl road course group. We will have to get a report from someone who attends the Awards Banquet to find out who the winner was.

Here is a pic of the 5 Ultralites that showed up. from the left :

Chris Porter, Chuck Spera, Jerry Eddens, Paul Snyder, Kevin Boulton

As you can see from the Mongoose trailer behind us, the efforst by some teams are pretty intensive. That doesn't mean they can beat a seven though. We will see what the final standings say.

Here is the engine compartment of the Deronda pictured yesterday.

Here is the Ultralight S2K-R brought by Chris Carter, which he recently acquired. This was Chris's first Run N Gun, and he was getting his car sorted out, and it looked good on the track.

Wow, I get first picture honors :o . I was hoping to have the car sorted out well enough to compete in the racing events but didn't have enough time to get it to a point I felt comfortable putting it on a road course. I did get the car on the track for the track experience on Thursday and Friday and had a great time. I plan to be much more "in the mix" next year and am already creating my list of stuff to bring.

Brian, Loren, Chuck, Kevin, Jerry, and Paul were all extremely helpful with advice for the issues I knew of, and for making this winter's "todo" list a bit longer. Thanks again guys for your help and support.

Jerry got my name wrong in this post but it was correct in the other posts: "Chris Porter"

Jerry, Thanks for all the great photos, wish you could have stuck around. Also thanks to you and Sue for the best Seven's Party in St Louis. Chuck in his Ultralite XR7 ended up with First in Autocross Overall, First in Class Autocross, First in Class Road Course, First in Class Drags and Overall Class Winner. Kevin in his Ultralite S2KS got First in Class Autocross, First in Class Roadcourse, and Overall Class Winner. But John Meyers in his modified 480hp LS3 powered Stalker took Home the Gold, with the Fastest time on the Drag Strip, Second Fastest Time on the Road Course, and I'm not sure how he did on the Autocross, but I am sure it was great. Hats off to all that entered and attended, in my 7 years of Run N Gun this was the best! The competition is getting much stronger, the event is getting run better, and everyone is having more fun.

Michelle and Loren were using up what ever was left in the Vette to show those high dollar Cobras that even a rental car can kick their butts. :hurray:

I don't think anyone got a photo of Chuck and Barb's Toy House Kitchen, but we all might have starved to death without Barb's wonderful lunches and snacks. There never seemed time to leave the track for food and what they serve there does not need mentioned. I think Barb should have gotten an Award for keeping us all going every year!! Jerre said what she missed most of all was "Barbie's Goodie Kitchen".

Also want to thank Michelle for all the energy drinks that helped keep us all going strong. Two of the sweetest, prettiest gals you'll ever meet.

Run N Gun was great this year. I think there were about 10 or 15 more cars than the previous year running on the track. The manufacures showed up with some heavy machinery and performed well. Try as they may they had a hard time catching John Meyers and his LS3 powered Stalker. The Mongoose team finally pulled ahead of him by a few hundredths of a sec in their GTP replica in the last few sessions. The 7s community did a great job representing the different marks and had some of the fastest times of the week on the track/autox,drags.

Mojito suffered a fatal engine problem on the first day on the track. It seems the G forces on the banked oval at high rpm pulled to much oil away from the pickup assy causing the bearings to fry. Kevin did managed a 1.07 time in the first few sessions of the practice day. Chuck Spera was right there with him within a few hundredths.

Michelle and I got to play in the rental car for a few days which was alot of fun. I think we pissed off a few Cobras with the rental car as they were getting passed on a regular basis.

I agree with Brian, Barbs kitchen kept us feed fat and happy the entire event. Barbs cooking is much better than what the track has to offer. Much appreciation to Chuck and Barb for hosting us each day.

Thanks to Jerry we had good food and an excellent bench racing session on Thursday night. That party is one of the highlights of the event.

I am not sure how many plaques the 7s took. From the top of my head it was about 16 or so. They should have it the official results posted in a few days.

On the Friday awards banquet there was an auction held that included VIP Nascar tickets at Gateway. The proceeds went to the Operation Comfort program that some of use supported earlier this year. In total 12500.00 dollars was raised for the wounded solders program.
