Decent Highway Tire

I am looking for a low-cost decent quality road tire that will give me a good compromise between grip and durability. I have separate track tires but need something to scrub quite a few touring miles. My last set of Yokohama ES-100 fulfilled the low-cost requirement and was kind of so-so in grip for road driving but had a strange unsymmetrical wear behavior.

I found a good price on Toyo T1R ($77 for 195/50-15 and $99 for 225/50/15). They are relatively light for a radial tire (lighter and cheaper than the TOYO competition tire R888) and with an UTQG rating of 280 AA A they should not be really bad and hopefully last a few miles.

Somebody has an opinion or experience on this piece of rubber?

Thanks guys!

Gert,

Before I switched to 13” wheels with R888s, I used the Toyo T1s. The T1R is the replacement for that tire, and by all accounts performance is very similar. I think it is a great tire for a se7en given the criteria you set forth. As you noted, they are pretty light, and they also have a softer sidewall than most performance tires which is a good thing on such a light car. Wear rates are great and they do very well in standing water. In fact I have kept my wheels fitted with those tires and plan to use them when touring.

I have the Toyo T1R's on my Birkin and I like them very much. I have 195/45-15 on the front and 215/45-15's on the rear.

They ride well, deal with heavy rain very nicely and they are quiet. The grip is fine for a street tire and the breakway is very controlled and I've not gotten in trouble with them at all even in spirited driving. The seem to be wearing well.

I'd buy them again.

I have T1Ss on one Miata and T1Rs on the other. I like them both. I used to use the T1Ss on track days and they did very well. On the Miata the T1Ss were good for about 11,000 miles and 8 track days.

Great ride and just a tad slower on turn in than Toyo R1s. I dropped 2.5 seconds per lap when I switched the Miata to Kumho Victoracers V700s but they lasted less than 800 miles, mostly on the track.

They get noisy when worn but on a Se7en, who cares? As already noted, they are great rain tires. Totally useless in the snow.

Gert, I've got the Toyo T1R's 195 front and 225 rear. You can check them out Sunday! Over 10,000 miles with a few track days and still plenty of tread left, evenly worn.

Now that you say it, I believe I remember you mentioning it. Anyway, another positive vote on the T1R and the price is right (although I noticed I have to add another $60 shipping for the set).

The Dunlops look also quite interesting but a little heavier and not available in my preferred dimensions.

I will go ahead and just order a set of the Toyos.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hello,

I have a set of Falken Azenis on the Heretic that work fine on the street and are a reasonably priced tire. To be honest I think on a LSIS any of the modern street performance tires will probably rot before we wear them out (assuming they are not used for track days) based on the average annual mileage, the load on the tire and the fact that if you drive a LSIS on the street at the limit you will probably end up in jail or the morgue before you wear out the tires. Most street tires are designed for cars twice as heavy as ours and we need to work them hard and play with pressures in order to get them into their optimum heat/traction range.

I had a set of Toyo R1's on my Alfa and thought they were the best street tire I ever had. I can only imagine their successor is as good if not better and Yokohamas have a stellar reputation. I think if you are shopping price check on the Falkens, I think I paid about $70 each for 205/65/14's.

Just my 2c worth.

Cheers-

Dermot.

Gert, This may save you a couple bucks on shipping (though they are a bit more expensive)... and they're pretty reasonable when it comes to mounting and balancing.

Ah, interesting....with the price difference and the tax it is almost awash. But it is pretty close to where I live. I will check with them.

Thanks, Gert

major price cuts on the re01r with the release of the RE11r. they do have stock of the 195 50 15 ($77) still from todays phone conversation. I am currently using these on my 7. these tyres will be much stickier that the t1r. the R1R has been anecdotaly better on lower weight cars(2200-2700# cars).

  • 2 months later...

I used the REO1R Yokahoma from Tire Rack they were good on the track and dry roads. Not so well if you get caught in the rain. Not a problem for most seven owners. At those prices you will be very satisfied. I think I paid close to 200.00 a tire.
