slngsht
I never understand these lists... Integra Type R is #22, ahead of NSX (#29), Mclaren F1 (#71). Corvette Z06 and ZR1 are not even on the list, while Nissan GTR is the #21 "Driver's" car with all its launch control crap.
southwind25
it's a list... i think we all have our own list.. mine would include the ginetta G4, and probably several others.. but being fair, i have only driven 4 of the cars on the list.. i dont know the diffrence. Kitcat
I haven't driven it, but all the performance data I have read on the Noble M400 would put it in the top 5. The magazine is clearly are using some kind of subjective "fun-to-drive" factor. At the track, the Miata ranked # 9, would lose to most cars on the list, certainly to an M3-I know, having owned both. On the other hand-I would agree that from a purely fun perspective, a Miata is hard to beat.
Hank
If it was a gay list I would definitely put Miata at #1. No guy looks heterosexual in a Miata. Period. Two guys in a Miata is just wrong.

MHKflyer52
Have to agree with Skip on that, I bet Hank has never driven a Miata. It happens to be the number one selling sports car in the world to my knowledge, it has out sold all other sports cars I have been told and besides I could care less what anyone thinks of me when I am driving my Miata as it is fun and it has AC and is easy to get in an out with the top up.......still smiling and laughing. scannon
Note that the list is titled "EVO magazines top 100 drivers cars". Not top 100 performers. It implies to me that "rewarding to drive" is the criteria, not all out performance figures, otherwise the Veyron would be at the top of the list along with the Gumpert and a few others. BTW, "Miata" is an old German word for Reward. Also of interest is that the Miata they chose is the 1.6 liter model with all of 116 hp at the crankshaft not the later, (relatively) higher HP models. I tend to agree with this as the early 1.6 motors were sweeter engines than the 1.8's. They love to rev. A well driven 1.6 Miata will show its tail lights to many a high powered sports car on a twisty road or tight track. BTDT. The Miata does have a reputation as a Chick Car although far more men have purchased them than women. My Miata has this engraved on one of the air vents: At 15psi this ain't no chick car. The other one has the classic: Sit down, shut up, strap in and hang on. One ride in this car has made a believer out of many a scoffer.
Mondo
I have to agree about the Noble's rating being kind of low. That's the car I really wanted but was a little out of my price range (I do miss an A/C as it gets freakin hot here;)).
slomove
IMHO pure nonsense....what is a "driver's car"? Or what is not a driver's car. Reminds me of that VW commercial "drivers wanted" for that utterly boring Jetta. I would maybe take the definition of a fun car but then fun is still in the eye of the person having fun (or not). Kitcat
I owned a Miata 1.6 and a 1.8. The 1.8 was faster. Both were a ton of fun to drive. I did many track days in the 1.8. With a few mods to the 1.8 it was about as fast at Putnam Park racetrack as my 283 hp Evo VIII, and about 2 seconds a lap slower than my Caterham. 7evin
I have hardly driven any of those cars, Passed a bunch of them on the track and had several of them pass me. I would love the opportunity to drive all of them. As far as Hank's opinion .... I have a new Hero.... No holds bared with Him... ROFL... They say a picture is worth a 1000 words..... Well here is 2000 words worth and I'm more confused than I was before. On the topside I agree with Hank..... On the bottom side... whew that could be a stiff argument.... scannon
Can we agree if you drive a miata with an automatic...... your gay;) No, we cannot. Quite a few of our local club members have automatic Miatas for various reasons, bad knees, a spouse who cannot drive a stick or just prefer to let the car do the shifting. None of them to my knowledge are gay. Many young people have never learned to drive a manual transmission, some of them own automatic Miatas, does that make them gay? If/when my left knee gives out and cannot be repaired again, I will have an automatic Miata. I am not gay. The only really good Miata mechanic in our area has one and although he lives in Boulder, he is definitely not gay. We did have one gay couple in the club many years ago but their car had a manual transmission. I recall reading somewhere that more gays drive BMWs than Miatas. If you have a BMW in your garage does that make you gay? Generalizations are generally wrong. :smash:
Hyper
I recall reading somewhere that more gays drive BMWs than Miatas. If you have a BMW in your garage does that make you gay? Well, the gay couple in my parent's neighborhood had a meticulously well maintained Z4. Also a meticulously well maintained house. To generalize, gays make pretty good neighbors. In all seriousness, what you drive doesn't define who you are, people are individuals and I'm happy for whatever makes you happy (so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else). I've known people who think that the Celebrity was the height of automotive achievement. Still, I'm not buying an automatic any time soon.
Mondo
ok, ok.... it was just a little levity. You Miata guys are a bit touchy on the subject;) I remember my Drill Sargeant telling me, in front of everyone "California, the land of steers & queers, and I don't see no horns on you boy". Having grown up in the Bay Area, it ain't no big deal. I'd love to have one of the new sequential paddle shifting transmission and not have to learn heel/toe downshifting. If it's good enough for World Rally drivers (my heroes) then it's good enough for me. Edited September 11, 2009 by Mondo
slngsht
eh, I got a chance to drive a paddle shifting Aston Martin... didn't really do much for me. I get alot of satisfaction from nailing a heel-toe downshift
Kitcat
I love the dual clutch, computer operated, paddle shifters in my '08 M3. They never miss a down shift and cut 1/2 second off the 1/4 mile time. Also, I am shocked 1/2 dressed woman draped over the Miata engine bay. That's just a terrible example of sexual exploitation! I am wondering if anyone knows where I can get the poster as I'd like to hang it in my garage as a warning to others as to what I find offensive....
