locostv8
This is a question that with the number of Caterhams etc I would think would be of general interest. Has anyone had parts shipped from UK to US?? If so how did you do it?? I found a pair of screens I would very much like to have that weigh approx 3 grams the postage would be 41 pounds. It's not that I'm cheap BUT this is supposed to be a Locost.locostv82007-02-16 00:13:
solder_guy
Two screens weigh 3 g .. and he wants £41 GBP for shipping? You are getting ripped off! http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/icon_bs.gif That's $80 ! yellowss7
Just had an order of parts shipped from Caterham and it too cost me about 41 pounds to ship. A couple of front springs, spark plugs and 5 oil filters. Not a bargain by any means. I had an engine shipped over and it was only 500 dollars shipping. BTW, I got charged $12 dollars Custom fees in addition to the shipping on the parts order. Tom
JohnCh
One of the vendors in the UK from whom I've bought parts in the past suggested using the Royal Post for light, yet bulky items. Unlike the big boys who charge based on a combination of weight and volume, the RP apparently only looks at weight. For heavier items, I've heard pretty decent things about parcels2go.com. The only downside is that when I was having my transmission shipped, I couldn't get confirmation from them that I could purchase adequate insurance, so I went with Fed Ex. But that's another story http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/images/emoticons/wink5.gif -John
Al N.
Back in 2005, I had the large fuel cel shipped over from ATL, and it cost me£187.00 just for freight, plus about $80 in customs fees as noted by Tom above...that was POD by the UPS guy. So it ain't cheap.
solder_guy
Currently I'm awaiting arrival on a fuel injector manifold, injector loom harness, air flow meter, surge tank and other small bits from Australia .. and it cost me only $87 US$ via air. We'll see if customs does anything to that result. If I were dealing with outrageous shipping from the UK .. I would have it sent to a friend there to then forward to me. scannon
I had a Quaiffe diff shipped over and the cost was quite reasonable although I can't remember the exact cost or carrier. Even with the shipping and currency transfer fees, I saved about $400 over buying it in the USA as I got in on a group buy I found on the Blatchat forum. Since it was bought for export I didn't have to pay the VAT and there were no customs taxes or fees added on at this end. Skip

stevet
Works both ways, guys. I just shipped a painting to a customer in England - painting was rolled, frame was dismantled, total weight about 10lbs. USPS was $105 (with no tracking and limited insurance), FedEx quoted $350!
