Quaife Sequential Gearbox for R400

So, as winter upgradeits sets in, I am thinking about replacing the my Caterham 6-Speed transmission with a sequential helical gearbox. The car is a Caterham Superlight R400 SV. I am not so sure that quick shifting is the limiting factor on my lap times but it sure looks fun.

I did not do this when building the care this summer because I thought it would be too loud. Now it seems that helical gearboxes are the way to go. http://www.quaife.co.uk/catalogue/products/qbe60gh

So...I am wondering if anyone has experience with this transmission and if so, what you thought of it.

Looking forward to some feedback.

PS. If I do get it, I'll have a low mileage (1,300) Caterham 6-Speed to part with.

Seriously though, I'm happy with Quaife in general, and would also highly recommend Taylor-Race-Engineering in Plano, Texas as a source.

I have a 6 speed straight-cut Quaife sequential in my Caterham, and I love it. Having previously had a straight-cut 5 speed, I actually think the sequential straight-cut whine is quieter, but I suspect that's because I use an aeroscreen and no roof now.

 

The clonk of the sequential is quite brutal, but it certainly adds to the 'sensory overload'. The 'almost' flat shifts are incredible, and the quality of the Quaife box is second to none in my opinion.

 

I bought mine directly from Quaife in the UK and it arrived in less than a week.

i think it depends on application and powertrain for the 7's if its an improvement or not. for road work and cruising, the straight cut gears just make too much noise for me...especially that last gear in overdrive.

 

if you have a torque rich motor, then i'm not sure if the 6 speeds really gives you that much more even on the track...just more gears to shift. on the opposite side, with little torque available...i would welcome the extra gears.

 

i've heard the comment before about the quiafe sequential being very clunky on the shift as it was designed for alot more power and heavier cars than the 7's.

Thanks for sharing. I am considering Helical gears, Caterham says they are much quieter than the straight cut gears. I am running a Durarec 2.0L built to R400 specifications, about 220 HP.

Karl, you may want to look into the Sadev sequential. Some of the boys on Blatchat are moving in this direction.

Karl, now I really can't wait to see your car/beast. I love the 6 speed, but watching some videos of guys lapping and just flicking down two gears looks and sounds soo good. Damn, I may end up buying your Duratec and getting a Sadev too after I see it.

I wish I had the skills to put it in. The boys at Radical Motorsports in Ramsey are doing the work. Perhaps they would let us watch the install. This is great shop, Burt is my main man there... They are located on Rt. 17 South near all the car dealers.

That would work.

 

Bolting up the gearbox and doing a straight engine swap is doable. Wiring the quickshift is a different matter altogether.

MOG insists that you just have to splice the GCU into the ignition line somehow. I am just getting the flatshifter that cuts the throttle for just the instant you are shifting. My common sense (and I only have a very little) tells me to pass on the paddle shifter setup.

 

Joachim Westerman at MOG says "Yes, we deliver the SADEV with all including what you wrote. The only job you must do is setup the GCU what is mega-easy and cut the ignition cable and connect it with the GCU loom." Sounds easy no?
