I thought you all would want to mentally prepare yourself for the challenges of driving fast around a circuit. There are plenty of positive lessons from this video:

Slow in/fast out is the preferred method. They tried fast in/not out. Hard to see what happened with the Caterham at the very end-his was the most botched of some epically botched "turns".

BTW-the featured track is not NJMP.

ok, whats going on in that corner? are people just toast because they're too hot in an off camber corner?

Jon - I think you are right. Even so some of these are spectacularly cocked up. I prefer to be called Miss Daisy and be slow than risk a car as stupidly as these guys in the video did. :leaving:

  • 1 month later...

I notice everyone has gone quiet about the NJMP track day. I believe this is because everyone is feverishly brushing up their skills:

- Seems like Tom has been giving poor old Rover a real workout around a lot of tracks and even found 4th gear sometimes.

- Karl seems to be hanging out a lot with Porsches' these days - but I will forgive him.

I am sure Kitcat is up to mischief too?

Do I smell a scent of fear that all of us are concerned that we will show up as driving Miss Daisy in late June? :jester:

Anyway, I am not innocent in this. :o:rofl: Since I am spending most of June in the UK, I just booked a track day at Silverstone on the Formula 1 GP circuit in an R400 race seven and plan to get some quality 1 on 1 coaching at the same time, just 7 days before seeing you all at NJMP. :D

I am headed to Mid-Ohio this Monday for a track day. Since rain is predicted i will probably take my M3. Also, it's better suited to Mid-O's many long stretches. It will do 140 mph down the back straight, my Cat 110 mph, if I have a tailwind.

Thus far, my plans to go to NJMP in late June are still in place, and looking better all the time. Again, if it looks like a rain-fest, I will bring my M3. I am driving there, not towing, so weather is a factor.

No demon tweaks planned for the Cat, unless reversing the direction of the headlights when on track counts:). I will be sooo much more aerodynamic! I mite even change the oil, well see.

I actually got lucky and was offered an opportunity to become a member at NJMP this season, so, I am making the most of every trackday on the schedule. :hurray:

I definately have to order a new set of slicks and at this pace may have to get several as there are about 20 trackdays left this season.:willy_nilly:

Even with my slow driving that's alot of heat cycles!!!!

But you can be sure that I will have a new set of of tires in time for our get together.

So what happened to the rest of the potential attendees? Ron? Warren? Dave D. Box? And I'm sure that there are a few more that were on the list as maybes.

Mike M. If you are coming in early, let me know if you need a place to crash for the night. I have room.

Croc, I will give you my wish list for your UK trip. I'm thinking that a new set of Front brake pads would be a good investment.

Tom - Member at NJMP? What did you have to do to get that? Is it like selling Amway?

As for missing potential track day stars - well I talked with Jon at Cat USA today on an unrelated matter and urged them to finish Ron's R500 so that we can see how it compares to the other cars.

I am pondering ordering a new set of CR500s now as I suspect I will destroy a full set on a track day let alone both days. I think they are softer than slicks? Seems expensive to order them with spare rims and anyway I am driving myself to the track since I do not have a trailer so cannot carry them.

- Should I just hang the expense and buy a new set of CSR rims and put a set of slicks on them? Who is your supplier?

- Do you use a rattle gun to swap wheels between road and slicks?

- Does NJMP have facilities to swap old rubber to new rubber on same rims?

- Should I just fake my orgasms?....sorry wrong movie....:jester:

Mike - the trick is to turn the headlights sideways not reverse them - face the beams into each other. Only works on crossflows and not on superlights though. This sideways profile is better aerodynamically than a full reversal. I learned this trick years ago on my old 7 S2 from a seasoned old guy who knew all the tricks to keep ahead of me.

Croc, I don't think that NJMP has a tire changer on site that I know of, but I'll ask.

Mike I do have an impact gun that you are welcome to use to change wheels.

My supplier for the slicks is my Mechanic at BimmerWorks, here in Pa. http://www.bimmerworks.com/

He's a racer as well, and just came in first in class and 3rd overall at the "Devil in the Dark" 12 hour enduro at NJMP. In a BMW of course.

He's driven my car at several autoxs and just loves it. He does the mounting and balancing of the tires and wheels as well. I'm going to order the slicks next thursday when I take the Porsche over for it's inspection. He gave me a good price on the rear Pirelli Pzero Rosso's for it.

If you want I'll get a price for them if you give me the size you need for the CSR. You could ship the rims to me and I could have the tires mounted and bring them to the track in the trailer. As for getting them home? Ship them again?

Croc:

I was going to hold back on the 90 degree headlamp rotation. I was hoping that just the sound of my mighty X-flow would make you guys run for your trailers. But, if your new bad-a$$ Cats still somehow managed to be faster than me, then I was going to pull the 90 degree rotation out of my bag of tricks as a last resort:).

And what is all this "grip" talk? I thot half the fun of a se7en was sliding all over the place!

Thanks for the information and kind offer Tom. It is thinking time today on wheels and tires. One catch I have to work through is that my CSR wheels are not the same as the standard UK ones - at least on the rear I know that to be the case. Not sure why it was spec'ed that way.

I finally got around to replacing my old helmet yesterday by buying a new one. I figure 20 years out of the old helmet was pretty good although I learned yesterday that if you have an accident or drop the helmet you should throw it away...oops! Needless to say, my old one was the one I was wearing when I wrote myself and the car off 15 years ago. I was always proud of its "battle scars."

I was given a warning last year when I used the old helmet in the UK. So now I have a nice shiny black one complying with SA2010. I asked if they also sold liquid courage to help with late braking...unfortunately they said not but they did recommend the following product as tried and tested by many drivers:

Karl is doing a track day today with the Porsche Club guys. Given the wet weather I suspect it will be a wrist flashing affair with the seven having all the traction of a kitten in a wet bathtub. Based on your philosophy I think he will have a smile a mile wide.

I was at Pocono with Riesentoter (Philly) PCA this weekend. The track was a little wet due to heavy mist all weekend, but no standing water. I ran on CR500s and did not slide too much. The guys in this PCA region were very nice, none of the intensive competition you hear about.

My instructor Ian Goddard (Marco Andretti's CART driving coach) drove for a few laps. It was fun to see what the car could really do.

I have gotten the green light to sign up, so who besides me is really going and where do I send my money? I am cleared for both Monday and Tuesday, June 27/28. Will arrive late Sunday 6/26, leave to get partway home mid-afternoon Tuesday 6/28.

Edit: never mind where to send $, I now see the link for the event. But, just to be sure I am not the only se7en driver who shows up, is anyone one else actually committed to this (paid up)? I will hold off giving them my credit card for the $495 2 day fee til I see a show of hands of "committed" drivers:).

Mike, I am definately going. And speaking with Croc this week so is he. Karl has also expressed joining us.

Still wating on Steve (Bball) Stewart (Sabbot), Ron (redgoose) and Dave D. who had originally indicated they might attend. Box?

I told Croc that I would reach out to Ian at SCDA to let him know several of us were coming and find out when we had to commit by.

I'll check on room availablity at the track as well. Normal Member day rates are favorable. Don't know what they are for non member day events.

Hold off signing up until I hear from Ian. I just emailed him. I should hear back shortly.

Well that was quick. Here is Ian's response to my email.

Hello Tom

Thanks for the email

The event runs rain or shine

Yes, I can do my best to accommodate all the Caterham guys in the Intermediate Run Group, assuming they all have track experience.

We are running an early bird pricing special

$490.50 for the two day event, but that offer ends JUNE 13

Here is the direct link to register for the 2 Day NJMP event!

Thank you

Ian Prout

http://www.scda1.com

What I really asked and didnot get an answer to was "how late can we sign up?" Weather forecasts are good about 3-4 day max IMO.

He didn't say that they were almost booked up, but then he didn't say they weren't either. So do we book to get the discount? or do we wait until the week of the event and hope it doesn't fill up?

Since there are only 4 of us at the moment I don't think it's as critical. If we get to 7 or 8 then we may need to ping him again.

Last weekend I registered in the intermediate group and put the brookland screens on ... so if it rains I'll get wet, just waiting on confirmation of the place from Ian. Also may bring along a friend who will run the car as a novice (he still has to make his mind up) then I'll register him.

Great Stewart. That makes five of us so far then.

Come one Box, Ron and Dave D. Let's get it to 8. Anyone else out there that can make it? Steve, (bBall)? SteveS1? Even if you don't want to do the track day, come on out. I promise the banter alone will be worth the trip.
