Importing my Seven at last

Recommended Posts

I've owned my 1982 1600 X-flow Caterham since 1994 in England, where it was my daily driver for several years. I moved to the States in late 2003, and the car saw little use for a couple of years. It has been restored by Redline Components in the UK - they stripped it to the bare chassis and sent it off to Arch for refurbishing, etc. I'm about to import it to the USA... can't wait.

Aidan,

As said, yes, it looks great! Sorted by Arch sounds like a dream to me.

I don't want to sound pessimistic, cause I'm sure you know more about it than I, but importing a Seven for other than track use can lead to a very frustrating and lengthy registration process, to say the least. Hopefully MA is more receptive than other states have been.

Good luck,

Taber

As the car is older than 25 years, it would seem to be exempt from Federal Motor Vehicle Safety, Bumper and Theft Prevention Standards (form HS-7) and from EPA regulations as it is older than 21 years (form 3520-1). If you know more, I'd be grateful for any info! I'd hate the car to be crushed by Customs.

Customs in the US are lenient -- pay them and off you go.

You need to worry on DMV inspectors (they think they are powerful than FBI)

I spent some time looking at whether I could import my 1990 Westfield and decided it was not worth the effort. However, had it been 25 years old, I would have tried.

I also looked at importing for track/racing use only but unless the car was built as a racecar and has a manufacturer certificate that says so, that was a no-go too.

Best of luck and please post your progress and we will offer up as much advice as we can.

Just about to title and register my Seven in NJ so will post the gory details of that in a week or so.

PS: Love the car, looks great!

Aiden,

If the car is titled as in fact being over 25 years old, and all of your paperwork is in order, you should have no trouble from US Customs, Federal EPA, or Federal DOT.

i have imported two ex-military vehicles from Europe that were more than 25 years old, and US Customs recognized the rules and just waved them through. I had to pay the prescribed customs duty on them, but it was not much.

The 1990 ex-military vehicle that I imported in 2000? That is another story entirely...

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I've got a load of paperwork from the shippers to complete then the car should be picked up. I hate this form-filling, but it will be worth it in the end. Nothing beats the feel of a Seven.

  • 2 months later...

My Caterham arrived on Monday night. It started up after three turns on the key and couple of dabs on the throttle. What a great sound.

Just need to get it registered and inspected!

Just got it insured through Hagerty, as a Lotus replica. I won't be able to take it anywhere near a track, though. If I ever do a track day I'll get coverage through another company or else be uninsured.

Here's a photo of the car in our driveway here.

I just looked through my policy and didn't see anything that specifically forbid track days. I just see where they tell you should you race/do track days and something happens, you won't be covered.

The Hagerty person said it was due to Massachusetts law, and any kind of competitive use - even racing someone away from the lights could be deemed competitive - would not be covered. Anyway, I'll await my policy. I'm not planning to track it yet, although I did do a couple of track days at Goodwood a few years back.

love the car Aidan.

Hope they installed euro/USA headlights for you, otherwise you may get zapped for these at inspection.

Thanks for the warning - I've got RHD Cibies on it. Today I ordered from Redline some Wipacs for LHD, which they now use instead.
