By the way Kit, did you not directly through this site contact the seller of this car and then act as a finder/middleman/agent on this car for an exoitic car buyers consortium in NY, and then in fact scotch a deal that was about to be closed by an individual private forum member who was about to buy this vehicle directly from the seller via this group ? It is my understanding that the car went to the highest bidder. Finder/middleman/agent? Dunno. I did tell the seller to contact Tony Vacarro. Both this seller and I (my car was for sale also) were getting low-ball offers from members of the forum and elsewhere. And both of us found good homes for our cars, and more $, thru Tony, a long time Caterham enthusiast. It appears he is either back or there is something in the water in their neighborhood. BTW if you look at various automotive Internet forums that publicly report the data, you'll discover our ratio of active to total members is actually pretty good. We're at 12%, which is the same as Miata.Net, and higher than VW Vortex (7%), California Caterham Club (8%), and Autopia (2%). It's too bad as I like the majority of his posts. I even found his critique of me on this thread to be thought provoking: where do my loyalties as a seller lie, to existing se7en owners and our joint interest in preserving reasonable value for our cars, or with potential new owners hoping to find a bargain so they can see for them selves what the se7en experience is all about? My conclusion is obvious, but I did think abt it. If Rikker does evaporate, you can be sure he will soon be reincarnated here w/a brand new identity. And all will be well, for a while. And then to keep coming back over and over. Seems like a lot of work just to mess with such a small group, surely it would be more fun on a bigger forum. JohnCh Posted December 3, 2011 Share Posted December 3, 2011 Just confirmed that what I wrote above is correct. vBulletin states the following about Active Member "If a user has visited the board within the past number of days you specify, they are considered 'active'." The default setting is 30 days. It's an interesting stat to advertisers as it shows the number of unique registered users who viewed the forum in the past month. Whether or not those users took time to participate in a thread is of less interest to them. Back to the topic of the 2003 caterham, it's true that through Tony in NY I had a buyer in about 30mins flat, with an offer that sealed the deal on the car. Sorry to Rikker that he missed out, as we were chatting back and forth for at least 10-days but there was no underhand selling going on here... I was honest and upfront with what I wanted to get out of the car but no offer ever came in at that magic number. In fact, I was told a couple of times that it was overpriced and that he would not pay that at all! Interestingly, it seems that I am now selling the car for a second time as I was approached by someone in NY looking to buy my car from the dealer that bought it from me so I can only believe that even after sale and shipping there was still good value in the vehicle. I've enjoyed the postings and the banter from the folks on this site though and I only wish that I had been a regular during my ownership of the car... it gets lonely down here in South FL! I have been very happy to to put 5 or 6 Caterham sellers and Caterham buyers together in the past few months. All have been very happy with the cars and I really enjoy doing it. Not one of them did I solicit being involved in. ( i think, but maybe there was one that I offered my services) As the general rule, people approach me to about their cars, find them a buyer or find them a car. Not two weeks goes by that I dont get a call or Email. And I dont do this for free, but I dont get rich either. That is what makes the world go round. So when a person calls me about a car, if it is fairly priced, I usually do have a buyer for it. Fairly priced is of course the operative word. And even that has multiple layers. If a person has a car that he has done a lot of "things' to it, then you have to find the one person that wants that car. Sometimes it takes months or even a year or more. In the case of this car, it was fairly priced and I knew someone that would buy it because of that. All I was concerned about is the the seller and the buyer were happy, and they both were. I do not feel bad because someone else did not get it, that was not my fault that someone else did not see the value of the car the same way I did. It is all about the timing, knowing the market, having the connections and be able to convey to a buyer the wisdom to pull the trigger on a moments thought. If someone thinks this is a "buying group" or some organized affair, I can assure that it is very much just me shooting from the hip. I really wish it was more organized.
