MBEARDEN
I am in the process of buying an 03 Birkin...it is being picked Thursday. My houses and cars are with Travelers...they could not cover the Birkin. I checked with Hagertys...they are still thinking about it but are giving me grief about the newer age of the car...they called today and seemed to try to get me to say that I would be driving the car often...a daily driver...they seemed to be looking for a way not to write it. Has anyone had this kind of problem. It was a confusing call. Driving record is spotless. Any thoughts
wemtd
Insurance coverage seems to be a bit arbitrary (see old posts for this) another place to check is american collectors http://www.americancollectors.com/. They offered to insure my birkin without any hassle. however i've gone elsewhere so i don't have experience beyond their quote. good luck
midgetracr
Haggerty has been terrific to deal with for me. Are you talking direct with them or thru a broker?
scannon
Make it clear that your car is a replica of an original Lotus 7. That's what it took to get Hagerty to cover my '04 Caterham.
Croc
Most people do not appreciate this but insurance is state regulated. This means that each company has to be licensed in each state to do busines, file premium rating plans, state reporting, etc. A lot of the difficulty on getting insurance comes from the company not being licensed in a specific state to be able to write that form of policy. The other catch is that Hagertys is not an insurance company. They are an insurance broker front that relies on a cooperating insurance company carrier behind to offer the policy. The big question is which state are you in? Of the main line insurers, State Farm, Chubb, and Liberty/Safeco are the most flexible but it depends on the state. Hagertys and American Collectors as others point out are generally helpful (subject to the state again). For me Grundys was more helpful as their policy wording was less restrictive. My prior seven was done with State Farm but they would not touch the current one. Always make the time to read the policy restrictions with these types of policies (e.g. garage construction requirements - floor, roof, walls; use of the car at shows/events, mileage limitations, flood zone rating, weekends away from home, etc.). The policies all vary substantially by individual state. So the policy I read for NJ is not anything like the policy that I might be given in Colorado or Illinois. Unfortunately, I only offer insurance for oil rigs that go boom in the gulf and not cars - would have made my own life much easier! Kitcat
My Birkin is insured w/State Farm, took 2 minutes to add it to my coverage (along w/my Caterham). It does have an exemption for accidents at the race track, tho, even if was a "driver's education" course.
MBEARDEN
I am in Arkansas...I will call Hagertys and remind them it is replica of a Lotus 7...the rep for a local company that calls on me can write it for only $236 but I have to move my other cars...that may be my best option. I will check with Grundy this morning. Thanks for the advice.

MHKflyer52
Southern California, State Farm on all nine vehicles with agreed value on the 7, Porsche and MG. They also insure our properties. Only restrictions are on the 7 an Porsche and MG if going out of state I have to notify the local agent when and how long and no coverage for any track use on any my vehicles which seems to be about standard. MBEARDEN
Finally got things taken care of with Hagertys...$448 a year with towing and a 3500 mile annual limit. Car should be here Saturday...
jimrankin
Did mine through State Farm, no problem other than they had to call it a "Loutus" as the DMV had mistakenly spelled it that way on my title. Guess the DMV didn't think much of the car. LOL.
Jim F.
My Hagerty policy states: Ins. Co: Essentia Ins. Co. Agent: Hagerty Ins. Agency, LLC Covered: 2002 Caterham Roaster (maybe that's the secret) Forgot to mention that my policy is "agreed value", no mileage restriction, no collision deductible, and "Body Type": Assembled Edited October 6, 2011 by Jim F. Automoda
Grundy is mine (I think I remember their name right). Its like 400/year with unlimited milage, though the car is not supposed to be the main daily driver. I dont know that I have towing though. (But actually I do drive it a lot. Bwahaha. Probably 5K/year or so). I thought they were a better deal than Hagerty when I was doing my research.
speedwagon
My S1 is on my geico liability policy as same as the truck and buggy. When asked about collision my replywas that I have not had it since 1963 and have saved enough to cover a total loss and besides the salvage value could well reach the price that I had paid. My main concern is my own backside if i can save it who cares about the car. It may be small and vunerble on the interstate but it stops quick turns fast and acelerates quicker than the hunters, so it is hard to hit if you pay attention.
