5/8th Scale Seven

My friend Tom Beauchamp recently contacted me to announce that he is building five 5/8th's scale Sevens. Of course, I immediately stopped by his shop to put down a deposit. As of today, two of the five Sevens that Tom is building are spoken for.

The car that Tom is building for my kids (Christmas gift) will have a roll bar, windscreen, cycle fenders, push-button start, work GPS speedometer, horn, and working lights. When finished, it will look very similar to my Birkin.

Here are a few photos of a 5/8th's scale Seven that Tom built a while back. This example is owned by a fellow Coloradoan and Lotus enthusiast.

I'll update this thread with photos and updates on the build. If you are interested in getting one of these gems for yourself (or kids), send Tom an email at beauchampracing at yahoo dot com.

Wow,

That truly is an amazing piece of engineering. My kids would go nuts for something like that. They would have to fight me for it though.

In many ways its a crazy purchase...then again so is art work on a wall. Life is short....enjoy it

I hope your engine provides enough grunt for donuts!

I have a deposit on the second of the batch of five cars. I'm torn between the classic BRG with a yellow stripe and clamshells and making it look like my Caterham with Laguna Seca blue color and cycle fenders.

Upgradeitis has already set in and I'm scheming on finding a way to fit a larger motorcycle engine with a gearbox. Space is limited since the engine is in the boot and your legs go where the engine would normally be.

Why not put a 49cc three speed automatic from one of the little pocket bikes in it. A friend mounted one on a go cart and it moves very good or you could put a PRD 125cc TaG Engine or Comet engine in it as they would make it very very fast and are small and light weight. Here is a link to a good site for these engines.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry I haven't posted any updates for a while. The build progress is moving along nicely, but shipping delays and a few mid-stride changes prevented the car from being ready by Christmas.

The chassis and components are almost ready for powder coating. The bonnet, nose cone, and scuttle are almost ready for paint. I decided to go with a 36V/1000W electric motor. The car will have a thumb actuated throttle and rear disc brake.

The tires that we originally ordered were way too small on the car as you can see in the photo with my kids, so I decided to go with bigger ones.

They have already run over the dog!

Looks good. There is leg room to grow, always nice with kids since they tend to grow a bit. I suggest making it easy to move the steering wheel to the center of the car. Kids grow sideways as well as up! Also a central steering location will allow dad to test drive it on occasion.

He drove this one several miles on city streets early one Sunday morning to a car show. Due to traffic concerns, it came home on the back of my trailer. Gives you a size perspective.

You may recall that I was trying to buy a similar type 7 that was on ebay a while back but ended up with a Porsche 550 Spyder

More progress...

headlamp brackets are complete (getting them chrome plated), front wings and brackets are complete, and the interior is coming along nicely.
