We have just placed an order for a LHD R500 SV, the only one ever made. Ford Grabber Blue (Mustang) Carbon F/R wings, leather, track day exhaust, track day role bar, CSR rear rims, 6 speed.

You never know I might even keep this one! :hurray:

Pix/cost/why so rare?

No pix yet. Caterham have never built a LHD R500 SV, several RHD ones, cost in Canada approx 100k.

I'm sure about these things.....are all other R500's RHD ? I see pictures of the R500 on the USA web site & I'm pretty sure it's a LHD, maybe not an SVC ?

Congratulations by the way, awesome car even considering the cost.

The "Original" R500's were Rover K series based and to my knowledge, only one of those is in the States, in California, and is a RHD version. It is an S3.

The newer Duratec R500's are S3's as well, as the R500 designation was originally based on a power to weight ratio of approx. 500bhp per tonne.

For an SV to be a Superlight R500, I would think that you'd have to up the base hp up to meet that spec. However, will it be Badged as an R500 from the Factory?

Karl's, SV has a 295hp Formula Atlantic spec Cosworth Duratec, which IMO more that qualifies as an R500+++, However, I think his was originally an R400.

Like my Superlight, it is badged as Number 123. But the motor is the VHPD spec of the Superlight R. or in the new terminology an R400.

Clear as mud eh?

I know I have not had my coffee but I had to re-read this post 3 times! Must be the inner Democrat coming out Tom? :seeya:

However, I think your assertion is that an R500 cannot be an R500 unless it has 500hp per tonne and Mr Fatso SV weighs sooooo much that it will never have 500hp per tonne with a standard R500 engine spec but needs another 100hp+ to balance the R500 equation?

But that cannot be true because the car will have a nice little plastic plaque from Caterham to glue to the dash saying it must be an R500?

Personally, a dashboard plaque does not get me horny - my numbered CSR Superlight plaque is sitting in a box somewhere and is not on my car. Driving the the car is far more fun.

So Terry's R500 will have 265hp area. Should be enough to get the average person speaking gibberish incoherently and rapidly pass a K series superlight. Mind you, the extra horsepower option to really be an R500 also sounds pretty good to me.:D

And for the record, Karl's R400 on steroids would whup an R500 ass and send it home crying to mommy.

Us boys are just so competitive! :jester:

PS - Terry - Just to get back on topic, did you spec an H-pattern gearbox or sequential? Both are 6 speed I think?
