Your Storker looks very sinister! I think your car looks much better without the hood scoop.

I plan to get my car back out on the drag strip after I put on some wider wheels and drag radials.

Do you guys know if it is possible to retrofit the classic Storker with power brakes?

Thanks Mike!

I was looking for the thread where you listed your drag times... (edit: found it)

I'm planning on using the DRs as my street tires. Scaring people with acceleration would be safer than with cornering. I admit I may need to re-think that for a longer trip.

I think you could certainly retrofit the newer power brake set up to the older chassis. My only concern would be if the Miata master cylinder is proper volume for whatever calipers you are running. If you want to give it a shot, PM me. I could ship you my whole set up down to the line fittings. I went the other way (took off the power for manual). FWIW I really like the Wilwood pedal set up with two masters. Wildwood's Tech Department was very helpful in selecting proper size cylinders (I'm using their 4 pot calipers at both ends). In fact, it worked right out of the box. I haven't even needed to adjust.

ROAD COURSE

MSR Cresson 1.7ccw: in 2013, my fastest lap was approximately 1.23. I ran this lap on a square setup—15x10 Avon A11 compound slicks front and rear; 85ᵒ day; stock LS6 w/ speed density tune (370 rwhp/360 rwtq w/ mild street tune), headers, cold air intake and wet sump setup w/ Improved Racing oil pan baffle and LS1 F body oil pan; TKO-600 tranny w/ face plated gears; LSD w/ 3.23:1 gearing; front and rear aluminum wings for down force.

Here is a dyno run video for the tune mentioned above:

Here are two video from MSRC with the car running the abovementioned setup. In the first video, I used third and fourth gears while on track. In the second video, I drove the entire session in fourth gear. While no onboard data is available, the best time for each of these session was around 1:23

In March of 2014, I returned to MSRC and once again ran the 1.7ccw. The high of the day was 55ᵒ. It rained for the first half of the day and then misted till around two that afternoon. Afterward, the track dried out and everyone got in a couple of decent sessions. On the last lap of the last session, I ran just under 1:17 (1:16.8). To provide some perspective, there was a fellow there that day who had a spec race Ariel atom (stored the car at the track) and he told me that his best time for the 1.7ccw was 1:19. However, this time around, I had arrived w/ several mods to the car. Instead of a square tire setup, I ran a larger, staggered setup—16x10 Avon A11 compound slicks up front and 16x12 at the rear; Bogart Racing wheels; mildly modified LS6 w/ custom grind cam shaft from SNL, stage II heads (stock 243 GM castings and head work by TEA), ported throttle body, 42# injectors, speed density tune (425 rwhp/424 rwtq w/ mild street tune), headers, cold air intake and wet sump setup w/ Improved Racing oil pan baffle, windage tray, crank scraper, LS1 F body oil pan and a three quart Accusump system w/ a 35-40psi electric valve; aluminum drive shaft; same TKO tranny and same rear gearing; front and rear carbon fiber wings w/ an improved design and more down force.

Here is a video with two laps from the session w/ the last lap being the 1:16.8:

In July, 2014, I ran the car at NJMP w/ the same aforementioned setup (Lightning course, 1.9cw). During my last session on day two, I ran four fairly consistent laps that were in the neighborhood of 1:09; this, of course, was due to the fact that I had been driving for two days under the superlative tutelage of such on-track talent at Croc, yellowss7, kitcat……and many more.

The video for NJMP:

In November, I ran at COTA, 3.4ccw. After NJMP, I started experimenting w/ aero (CF windscreen and roll bar fairings), but never realized any measurable improvements. While at COTA, it rained the entire time (both days) with the high for the first day hitting 45ᵒ and a high of 50ᵒ for day two. During day two, just before the last session I would run for the day, the rain stopped briefly, the wind picked up a bit and the track began to dry. This lasted for about the first two laps of my session. While it’s nothing to write home about, during those two ‘good’ laps, I managed a 2:37 and a 2:34 (F1 cars are turning out 1:30’s at COTA). I ran the entire weekend on slicks….tricky, to say the least. Even with less than desirable track conditions and poor traction under acceleration (wet track), I was able to hit in excess of 150mph on the long straight during many of my laps that weekend.

Here’s the COTA video from that session:

1/4 MILE DRAG STRIP

Nothing to report here. The only dragging I do is when I ‘drag’ my a$$ out of bed in the morning….no racing involved. :jester:

WEIGHT

One evening, a couple of good ole’ boy dirt trackers brought their Longacre scales over to the house. We corner weighted the Stalker and it came in 1733 lbs. w/ a nearly-full tank of 93 octane (15 gal tank) and sans the driver. This weight was pre carbon fiber wings, lighter weight wheels, aluminum drive shaft and the carbon fiber windscreen. Never got the opportunity to weigh the car again afterward, but I’m guessing in the neighborhood of 1700 (1890 with me on board and fully donned in track attire).

As for weight bias, w/ me out of the car, it had a front/rear weight balance of approximately 51/49.

0-60 Time

Again, nothing to report here. Although, when Mike Sharkey owned the car, he told me he recorded some 0-60 times of approximately 2.5-2.6 sec using a stop watch. Still, no firm data to substantiate....but it does make for good conversation when downing a cold one and swapping lies with like-minded bretheren. :jester:

G-force

When I was running the square setup at MSRC, I’m quess-timating that I was pulling a max sustained G-force of 1.3. My best reasoning for this is that when I first ran MSRC, it was without an after-market baffle in the oil pan which led to my experiencing low oil pressure (below 20-25psi) in some of the LH turns. Afterward, I installed the IR baffle (good up to 1.3 G’s) and this mod cured the low oil pressure issue. However, once I switched to the larger staggered setup, sustained G-force increased to 1.5 (confirmed by logged data). This assumed increase (no data logging w/ the square setup) in G-force also caused my low oil pressure issue to return which I cured, once again, w/ the Accusump system.

And that's enough truth stretching for one night. :cooldude:

  • 3 months later...

I got a nudge on another forum and it reminded me to update. Sorry for the low sleep rambling but basically I am getting faster on the Road Course, but no quicker in the 1/4 yet.

I've been tracking the crap out of it, and neglecting the build thread.

I'm more of a road course guy. I have set fast time of day at every timed event I have done this year! Simple less weight theory in action! My events have been at Blackhawk Farms mostly but one road race event at Milwaukee Mile. Fun track. I never raced it before for fear of concrete. Sadly two racers' cars fell victim to that concrete that day...

I also went to Road America for the 1st time! Wow, you cannot oversell that place! I love it! High speeds. I don't know exactly how fast I got down the main straight but can tell you it was over 150, as I needed 5th gear! Gets pretty loud with no roof or windshield! I was definitely hitting some aero limits at that speed. Need to think about a windshield and downforce.

Whooping up on C7 Z06s on track days was quite a thrill!

As far as drag racing, I picked up some Nitto DRs earlier, also in 275/40/17s. I probably should have waited for some MTs. But I got in a hurry. As luck would have it I got rained out whenever I had time to go drag racing until last week.

My previous best was a 11.4 @124.01 with a 1.815 60', on road race Hoosiers.

The DRs were not the miracle cure I hoped for. I only got four runs in because it was Honda Night at Greatlakes Dragaway.... I'll hold back on that rant...

1- 11.660 @125.41 w/ 2.020 60'

2- 11.879 @ 123.84 w/ 2.030

3- 11.576 @ 125.10 w/ 2.057

4- 11.973 @ 123.64 w/ 2.151 (spinning a lot)

My son got some cell phone video that I will post once I edit it down.

I started at 18 PSI, then went to 16 PSI for the last two. I'm hoping lower pressure will do the trick. I also couldn't work on my launch much with just the 4 runs thanks to the Hump Day Honda $#!+ Show...

I hope to get back to GLD this Wednesday.

Side note, a buddy of mine with essentially the same engine in his 69 Camaro came along. With his current tune he made 449 RWHP! Up from the 419 he rain with initial tune (I am basing my power estimate on).

I have some bigger headers coming from Brunton. Once I get those on I need to get to the Dyno and tuner myself!

Glad you are enjoying it. Looks like it has been reliable. So, less weight+ more power AND reliability= formula for track day success. I can't imagine it at RA, those huge straights....

Thanks for the kind words Kitcat!

Yes, reliability has been a goal. The engine is pretty mild. Aftermarket rod bolts to hold it together, OEM LS9 cam, and heavy LS7 clutch. I could have saved some weight there but don't want to work on it unless it makes it faster!

I went to go drag racing and discovered it does require front pad replacement. I guess slowing from the big straights at BHF and RA have taken their toll. The good news is the Wilwood pads are only $40 something and the Miata rotors are less than $20 a piece. And I'm still on my original (used) Hoosiers!! Cheap consumables for the win!!

I got back to the track today, and thanks to a smoother experience was able to get 11 runs (ironically) in in the 1st two hours! Thats good because after the sun goes down, so does grip.

This time I ran 12, 10 and then 8 PSI in my 275/40/17 Drag Radials.

I got more respectable 1.8XX 60' times and was rewarded with a bunch of 11 flats at 125 MPH.

My best of the day was 11.040 @125.33 with a 1.845 60'.

The little 7 must be intimidating, because a couple people red lighted against me...

I was so desperately close to the 10s... But traction was limited and going away as the track cooled. A couple guys told me they could hear the tires spin even as I shifted into 4th. I'm confident I will see 10s this spring with warmer track. I was hoping to run the DRs as my street tires. But it appears I may need to go even more aggressive on tire to get the best 1/4 mile times (deep 10s?).

I was happy though, I ran across this guy at the track. The Lambo was having traction issues also. He told me he ran a 11.5 @135 with a 2.2 60'. I didn't get to line up with him but felt pretty good about my budget home built running quicker!

I also finally got a 0-60 time from my Speedhut GPS speedo!

3.03 seconds!

Again, painfully close to the 2.XX bragging rights...

Oh well, next year.

There was a pro-photographer at one of my track events. I finally had some time to upload and share a couple action shots!

Ha! Solid point.

Think of the issued body work is ill fitting granny panties.

After seeing the naked rear, I'm thinking thong or nothing at all!

A muscular, LS-powered Storker sporting a thong...that's just wrong. :jester:

Still looks better than you in a mankini! :ack:

. . . . . . :willy_nilly: . . . . . . :svengo:

And just think, all this started because subtle had to show his a$$ while driving on track! :smilielol5:
