nicholastanguma
Anyone wear a helmet just for casual drives? I've been seriously considering something to reduce wind and exhaust noise and avoid sunburn. I'm very fair-skinned, plus take a medication that's a serious photosensitizer, so the sunburn aspect is a very real concern for me. No, not a motorcycle helmet, which is too modern and bobbleheaded for a 7. Right now I'm leaning toward the pricey, handmade, low profile, vintage style offerings from Joe King in Brazil and TT&Co in Japan. Either 70's style full-face, or 60's style open-face w/ a 5-stud visor. These beautifully echo a 7's vintage aesthetic, so I don't think I'd look like a tool while buzzing around public streets. Experiences and/or opinions? rnr
Just replied to your post in the other thread: Helmets are good sense especially if your car has brooklands screens instead of a windshield. There is enough crap kicked off both our own tires and the cars in front that I drive with a lightweight full face racing helmet 99% of the time. For the few short neighbourhood trips (
Mondo
I like the TT and Cos helmet. At one time I thought about getting this military style helmet. I like the built in tinted visor that you can pull down. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OPEN-FACE-SCOOTER-HELMET-OSBE-GPA-TORNADO-ORANGE-ARMY-TR1-UK-all-sizes-/260985465363?pt=Apparel_Merchandise&var=&hash=item3cc3f22a13&vxp=mtr You might like helmets by Davida too http://www.designerhelmets.com/shop/helmets/brand/davida/ . DeanG
I think the pudding head helmets are pretty cool. I occasionally use a full face helmet when driving the 7, usually to ward of the cold.
Jackal
For casual drives I don't think I'll wear a helmet. I did get a new helmet for Auto-x though, and had to show it off since the topic came up. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l294/nivaguy/IMG_1842_zps0c223974.jpg

raceral
I did start a thread about the same kind of inquiry on the Locost USA.com. As it has been brought up here I thought I would just paste my original question as posted. Croc
I will offer a variation to the above. I have never worn a helmet while driving the seven - interstate or back roads. And I have done some longish drives on both. However, last year, driving home from work on I-95, near Newark airport, in my Audi A4 daily driver, a tractor trailer kicked up a 1 foot section of steel pipe into my windscreen/A pillar. One end ended up embedded in the drivers side head rest. Fortunately I ducked but I was very shaken from the experience. If I had been in the seven I would have been fine as the pipe would have sailed over the top of me. But it does not take much to imagine the consequences of what if it hit the pathetic little non-structural windscreen of a seven. A helmet may not have stopped something like that but I would prefer to be wearing it rather than not should an event like that occur. Lots of things get kicked up on roads, highways especially, such as rocks, pebbles, tire debris, exhaust bolts from Zetec Caterhams you are following, etc It depends how you like the odds when you want to roll the dice? That is a calculation you have to make based on personal preference and location. Its a little more risk in NYC area than it is in Montana for example. rss
i have mostly worn a helmet in the past, though since i changed out the windscreens i have made a few drives without, as with the reduced buffeting i can now drive about 85 mph without my cap blowing off. then recently i was t-boned in my daily driver by a moron blowing through a red light -- a sobering experience. had i been in my seven perhaps i would have been toast with or without a helmet, but i would rather take my chances with. so i no longer drive without a helmet. Al N.
For anything more than short drive (20 minutes), I pretty much always wear a helmet (to reduce effect of wind buffeting). And have always worn one on the highway. Now that I have a vintage car, I have been considering getting a Chapal or Pacto vintage style helmet. Very expensive, thought...even the cheaper Pacto is $1200 if you go for the visor and all.
Bonjo2
Save Phace or Fish Hedz face protection the way to go. Bass proshops has them pretty cheap. You can look like darth vader or stormtrooper or Misfits skull face. I normally only wear sunglasses, but if planning more than an hour on the interstate I'll wear my full face motorcyle helmet. S1Steve
I can understand wanting to wear some headgear. But I still enjoy the wind blowing over my balding head and feeling beat up after a nice long drive. I think that's one of the joys of owning and driving a 7... And losing another hat..... powderbrake
I have windscreens, and they do a good job, but the flying dust and occasional pebble are irritating, so I always wear motocross goggles over my glasses whenever I drive my seven. BS7driver
I worry about the same thing. I had a steel member go from the roll cage to the top of the windshield to make it a little more structural. Also, I fabricated wider side deflectors and Stainless fairings going to an armrest. works great and does not add that much weight. Now, I am no longer getting hit by stones. Check out the pictures. http://www.flickr.com/photos/99565189@N04/ Having said that, a 1 foot steel pipe hitting your car at speed could have killed you regardless if it hit the wrong place.
