Where to find custom cut safety glass?
xflow7 replied to slomove's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Mazda, do you know if when they do that they mark them with the DOT AS1 designation? I was kind of keeping this in the back of my mind in the event that NYS pukes on my windshield (figuratively, that is) -
And "under-powered" means anything with more than 5lbs/HP.

Also seen the passenger referred to as the Rev Limiter. And in case you browse any of the UK forums, SWMBO is a common one = She Who Must Be Obeyed

What's since come to light and is just plain creepy is that David Richards and his wife were on their way home from the Belgian GP yesterday in his helicopter when it experienced transmission problems shortly before their destination and crashed!! Happily, they walked away, but it's the strangest coincidence and gives pause to reflect on how random such events are.

Great clips. It's now been officially confirmed. McRae, his 5-year old son, as well as a friend of his son's and an adult friend of the family. Very, very sad.

Colin McRae and his 5-year-old son believed dead in a helicopter crash, along with two others (not his wife and daughter). http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/article2461339.ece Tragic. And coming less than two years after the death of Richard Burns. :nonod:

Indeed. But even if you support advisories on some of the blatantly violent and misogynistic stuff out there, it amazes me that something as innocuous as that album would get tagged (and I realize there is an argument of moral relativism there). I suppose it's a case of "label anything including the word 'bitch'," so it gets lumped in with all kinds of other crazy stuff. Oh well.

Fair point! :flag:

I was browsing Jazz CD's recently and noticed that Miles Davis's Bitches Brew has a Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics sticker on it. So, one of the seminal jazz fusion albums, that is entirely instrumental, from an artist who is one of the undisputed giants of 20th Century American Music gets labeld Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics because the word "bitch" appears in the title? You have got to be kidding me.

So, tell us a little about yourselves

Welcome eVox. The 7 community is great. Pretty much without exception all the 7 folks I've met or interacted with have been really good, down-to-earth, fun people. I have a good friend who's a long-time car guy and hung out with muscle-car guys, 'vette guys, Porsche guys, etc and he's commented to me on a couple of occasions that the 7-ers he's met hanging out with me are easily among the most fun and most down-to-earth. -
Holy crap, Mazda! I didn't expect you to stay up 'till 2:30 fixing it! Note to self: Only file bug reports early on weekend mornings. Mazda's nuts.

Hmmm, should have come up with an option to proceed without signing in. no matter, though. http://www.usa7s.com/aspnetforum/upload/430557882_SN021759_3.JPG

CT Inspection/Registration - We Got Bumpers!!!!!
xflow7 replied to 11Budlite's topic in General Sevens Discussion
Actually. I spoke with him yesterday. It doesn't sound like it's going to be too big a deal. He said that they often do not actually check the markings. But my viewpoint is if I make the effort to address the issues I can, then if they do decide to inspect I have a better chance of reasoning with them if there's something I cannot feasibly do. -
Don't see a seven get crossed like that very often

It looks to me like the track is maybe downhill a bit and then falls away shortly after turn-in as you're pointing towards the apex which may have started the rear coming around a little. It then sounds to me like in addition to adding some opposite lock, the driver attempts to shift some weight to the rear with a prod of the throttle, but instead it just erodes rear grip further and at that point he's done for and just saws at the wheel until it's too late. -
Sorry, but just to throw a little cold water on things. I was very near to swapping my windscreen for an aeroscreen about 2.5 years ago. As it happens, I had a collision with a dear that summer (still with windscreen) on the expressway in Indianapolis (some of you from the USA Sevens mailing list may remember). While I was lucky on many counts escaping uninjured, I am utterly convinced that the windscreen, small as it is, saved me from very serious injuries. It bore a significant impact by some part of the animal and, while obviously destroyed, I believe succeeded in deflecting what would instead have likely destroyed my head. After that experience, I if I ever do fit aeros, it will be exclusively for track/auto-x events, or very short blats. Pictures here: http://www.kodakgallery.com/BrowsePhotos.jsp?&collid=644218860105.178839152305.1189737451356&page=1&sort_order=0&navfolderid=0&folderid=0&ownerid=0 Edit: I don't really mean this as a "you shouldn't." I just never really entertained the notion that I would have such an accident in the 2000 miles a year I drove my car, let alone on the expressway. So it's more just to show that it pays to consider these sorts of things, however unlikely they may seem.

Small new bug... Seems like it doesn't always enlarge the correct picture. For instance, if I go to the first page of the "Should I?" thread, and try to enlarge one of the pictures of your car, I instead get a large picture of JBH's car (though it _is_ pretty). Maybe it's enlarging the last picture cached or something like that? Great enhancement to the site. That xflow7 guy is a genius. :jester:

CT Inspection/Registration - We Got Bumpers!!!!!

Wow, that's creepy. I am in the midst of trying to gather DOT lights for my car in the event that they actually decide to check all the markings and was thinking yesterday it would be handy to have a kit, or at least a list, that would comprise at least the effectively federally mandated stuff (i.e. DOT lenses, etc). Things like the windshield would be tricky as that becomes somewhat marque-specific and it may not be so trivial to get a correctly shaped piece of laminated glass with appropriate AS markings etc, even though it's flat glass. My focus on lights so far has yielded the following. My goal has been to find things that I can undo and revert to the standard fitment items without leaving a bunch of extra holes, etc. - Headlights: must be marked SAE H or HR. I bought these Hella Vision Plus Halogen lights. These fit pretty well in the standard 7" Caterham bowls, though the spigot diameter is a shade smaller so they're a smidge looser. Only other issue is that the rim is considerably thinner so requires some some shimming under the hold-downs inside the bezel. But mine are mounted and seem secure. And they plug directly in, so easy job. They have the alignment nipples on the front which are kind of ugly, but don't really bother me. - Tail-lights. Tail-lights (incorporating Stop/Turn/Tail) are usually marked something like AISTP (A=Reflector, I=Turn, S=Stop, T=Tail, P=Parking) is tail All I've managed to find on the tail-light front are trailer lights. I'm going with the ST-16RS from here for now because it is what I could find locally. They're huge and ugly as sin, but they'll work for now. Mounting on the existing holes requires drilling the back of the light and, at they're not contoured on the back, so it is necessary to rig up some standoffs at the top of the light to accomodate the wheel arch curvature and get them closer to horizontal. The other complication is that, as trailer lights, they are intended to use a common Stop/Turn filament, whereas Caterhams have separate filiaments. So to get truly correct functionality is going to mean sticking in a converter like you sometimes have to install in your trunk for towing. Those are relatively small and passive, though, so not such a big deal. - Turn signals are the trickiest. They must have an SAE I marking and very few lights you find around and about have that. I finally found some at NAPA, P/N 1506A that are marked for use as turn signals (I) and also parking lights (P). They are about the size of the marker lights used on recent Caterham clamshells. They are also a little fugly and are slightly complicated by the fact that they are intended to be chassis grounded. So they will require rigging up a ground terminal under a mtg screw or something. - Side Markers: I'll probably use the same NAPA lights, although, depending on what function you call these (side turn signals vs. clearance vs. parking, they need different codes, so I may get something else). The Tail, Front Turn, and Marker lights will all need to be connected somehow. I have some extra connectors on the way from Caterham USA, but apparently they were a Rover -
I'm in (assuming my car is successfully registered by then. )

Of course there is always this classic: A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts: "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised my friend I would meet him half an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The man below says: "Yes. You are in a hot air balloon, hovering approximately 30 feet above this field. You are between 40 and 42 degrees N. latitude, and between 58 and 60 degrees W. longitude." "You must be an engineer," says the balloonist. "I am," replies the man. "How did you know." "Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost." The man below says "You must be a manager." "I am," replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?" "Well," says the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you are going. You have made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in the exact same position you were in before we met, but now it is somehow my fault." :jester:

I remember reading about how they could never really put accurate HP numbers on Top Fuel motors because, a) nobody had big enough dyno's, and b) the engines wouldn't stay contained in one zipcode long enough to do a pull.

Agreed, it was almost a palpable sense of emptiness above. Very, very strange.

There's a Camaro in town here all done up like the 3 car.

Actually, I was mid-move from Ontario to Cincinnati. The movers had arrived at my new apartment at ~8:00 and started unloading me; so of course I wasn't aware anything was going on (no TV or radio yet, you see). Now here's the interesting part (given the forum). I found out about the attack when I called my bank in Ontario around 11am or so to arrange the transfer of funds for... ...purchasing my Seven! As soon as a I said, "Hi this is David Williams," the conversation went something like this: customer rep (who kind of knew me and knew I was a Yank): "Oh my God, are you okay?" me: "Uh, yeah. I'm fine. How are you?" her: "Thank goodness you're okay. Where are you?" me: "I'm in Cincinnati." her: "Can you believe this?" me: "Huh?" her: "You have no idea what's happening, do you? Two planes hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon's on fire." me: "Uh, okay" Anyway, it was surreal to have somebody in another country telling you about such a thing while you're there completely oblivious to what's going on in your own country. Another interesting story I heard after the fact. There were 4 guys I later worked with who do an expedition-style canoe trip every year or so. In 2001, they went way the hell up somewhere on Lake Superior beginning something like the 8th or 9th. Anyhow, after several days paddling, one of them remarked to the others, "Wow, this is great. We're so remote, I haven't even seen or heard an airplane in 3 days." They eventually returned to civilzation a week or two later to return to Cincinnati and learned why. Dave

Mazda, The two symbols you put in two posts up aren't showing up in the post for some reason, but if they are a dark blue envelope and a faded blue envelope, then yes that already functions as a "new posts" indicator (at least for me). Dave
